Sodium hydroxide (lye) is used in making soap. Soap can not be made without using lye. Being a person who loves making my own soap, I can tell you, it is dangerous until it is cooked or heated. Or you can let your soap sit for about 6 weeks. (I don't have that kind of patience.) Basic soap has three ingredient's, water, fat and lye. All soap has these three ingredients. Usually a lot more is added to it. Just thought you might enjoy knowing there is a good use for lye.
True. All soap has lye. I didn’t know lye was actually sodium hydroxide. My high school freshman science teacher has us each take a sniff of it as she held the jug. I do suggest most people stay away from the pure form, unless making soap or having a good knowledge of its toxicity and danger. I’ll never forget that experience!
My favorite so far is an all purpose cleaner inspired by your recipe. But I've added few drops of peppermint oil (combined with tea tree oil) since it has anti-bacterial property too and will wade cockroaches :) we love the smell as well!! Smelling something great when I'm cleaning helps me enjoy the process
My favorite shower cleaner is a solution of a 1:1 ratio of vinegar and blue Dawn! I keep a dish scrubbing brush in my shower with this concoction and clean it about once a week and it stays sparkling clean - even works on grout!
My favorite DIY cleaner is 1 part white vinegar to 2 parts water. It is excellent for quickly wiping counters and as a base for baking soda cleansers. You can also add 1 part hydrogen peroxide to the base mix, put in a spray bottle and spray it on pesty concrete mould. Do this in the morning on a warm sunny day and the mould will be gone in 24 -48 hours. Loooove it!
My favorite diy recipe is the all purpose cleaner. One cup of white vinegar, one cup of water and a few drops of dish soap. It literally cleans everything and sometimes i put a few drops of lemon grass essential oil to make it smell good. I love all your diy cleaners and I have gotten rid of all the toxic ones. I feel a lot better when the grandkids are around
Add me to all who love that blouse! My favorite DIY's are the (so-called) toilet bombs , dishwasher detergent & laundry detergent I make. I keep a container of the toilet bombs in both bathrooms & toss 1 in the toilets daily. I mix baking soda, citric acid, a few drops of essential oil ( I use lemon or grapefruit or peppermint most often)...then just a small amount of water. I put mixture into a silicone ice cube tray. let it sit until next day. Pop them out, put them in container. They really do a great job keeping toilets fresh & clean.
I would suggest spritzing water into mixture...just a little at a time...too much water causes an overflow after the mixture is in a mold. It needs very little water. I make them often because I toss one in our toilets daily.

my favorit recipe for cleaning my shower (walls), my kitchen and fridge and more is this: in a bottle add some dishwashing soap (I use 1 tablespoon or so), then I fill the bottle half way up with water and add table vinegar (5%). just remember to shake the bottle before using it 😊😊 where I live there is a lot of calcium in the water which leaves a lot of residue. the vinegar takes care of this and the soap cleanes 😊 You could add essential oils to this if you are feeling fancy.
I don't use many DIY recipes for cleaning. However, for dusting my wooden furniture and doors I always use the following recipe: I add some water in a big enough container and to that I add some fabric softener, then I wet a cleaning cloth with the mixture, wring out the excess water, dust and repeat the process. The wet cloth takes away the dust effectively and the fabric softener makes sure that there aren't any streaks left on the furniture. Recently I also added some Detol in a particularly dirty room that desperately needed to be disinfected.
Eucalyptus Castile mixed with water as my all-purpose! I love this cleaner because it kills ants and spiders on contact, I'm guessing it's the eucalyptus mostly :) Just got your book, It's totally awesome! Thank you for all your work!!

I love any natural cleaner because of my respiratory problems i can't use harsh chemicals so i have wrote down all of your DIY recipes and am going to try them. Hopefully i won't be spending several days recovering then have to do it all over again. It is a never ending cycle of. Cleaning a big nasty apartment that has piled up then recovering from respiratory problems and skin irritations just for the mess to have piled up again. So thank you for alternatives to stop this cycle.
My favorite shower cleaner ( hope this is not toxic )..Ammonia and dawn dish soap , fill the spay bottle up halfway with Ammonia and squeeze in Dawn ( 2 good squeezes ) shake and spay shower , let sit for 20 min if you can and rinse..I did not do research on ammonia so hoping its safe love the diy cleaner
My 94yr. old Grandmother to this day still uses vinegar for her fabric softener in her laundry, I do as well. She also kept their door from their outhouse and it's been in her flower bed full of Lilies for many many years.

Clean My Space Love the degreaser. Mixed some up to clean my stove top and knobs. A 20 yr old + stove top is looking shiny again. This stuff cleans better than an industrial strength degreaser I've tried in the past. Plus the scent is amazing!

The oven cleaning method works great! I let my fiancé do the task with reading this chapter in her book and the results were unbelievable! My father tried to clean the oven with the regular store version and it wasn’t even close to be clean like in Melisa’s method! Recommend 👍

Hi Melissa! My favourite diy cleaner is: talc powder to remove oil or oily stain of clothes. Leave the stain dry (i.e.: do not soak it in water!) sprinkle with heavy layer of talc powder, let sit for at least an hour of two, brush away and launder as normal. That should do the trick! Also, getting rid of chewing gum that got stuck to clothes! It sounds insane but freeze - yes! Freeze the garment overnight in the freezer, the chewing gum will freeze too and the next day you can gently scrape it away and launder as normal! The joys of having children 😂😂😂
I had a lot of trouble with my kitchen sink clogging. I tried all natural declogging stuff but it wasn't working. So I tried 1cup of baking soda, I made sure it was all in the drain, then added 1cup of white vinager to the drain and quickly closed it because the fumes from the baking soda and vinager are quite strong. Let it sit for about an hour and rinse with hot water. It work well for my sink.
I guess because I grew up with bleach from my grandmother that is why I use it. My father taught me when I started helping the family clean as a youth to NEVER ever ever mix products especially bleach. I just believed him and never did it. I learned in school it can be a disinfectant or sanitizer depending on ratios. I agree vinegar is a great cheap disinfectant as well depending on ratios because the smell can get to me. My favorite daily cleanser I use all over the house is a spray bottle about 16 oz...add 1 tbsp of liquid soap, 1/4 cup bleach and fill the rest with water. You can add lemon essential oils like 20 drops. Lemon is my favorite. I have been using for about 2 years now. I want to start using your other ideas now!

I love my all purpose cleaning. I make it with marseille soap. I just grate a little bit from the block of marseille soap and melt it with some hot water. I ad about 4 teaspoons of baking soda. I will put the ingredients in a spray bottle. Then i fill up the rest of the bottle with water and put some lemongrass oil in there and shake it before use.
My counters and tables get sprayed with hydrogen peroxide(a great disinfectant), my floors with vinegar, my mirrors with rubbing alcohol, and any dusty surfaces with diluted vinegar. I do use commercial toilet bowl cleaner and I do spray my sink out with bleach. There's very few things that can disinfect as well as bleach. I find that making your own cleaners saves a lot of money. I'm a clean freak and I have a toddler so I would go through a bottle of multipurpose cleaner in two weeks.
cleaning the oven: use a good product for vitroceramic. also spray grease remover, use a sponge and let a few minutes. then use a scraper. finally, wipe. this technique also works for very dirty pans.

A large bottle of hydrogen peroxide poured into a spray bottle with 5-8 tablespoons of original Dawn dish soap added to it. Works well for the kitchen and on some spots for spot removal. Use with baking soda for the bath tub and sink.
Love these diys, buuuuuuuuuuut most of them will not disinfect/kill bacteria. My microbiology professor had us use "diy or alternative" cleaners and it did little to nothing. So keep this in mind when cleaning certain surfaces!
ReginasDoseOfBeauty Totally true. I saw a blog post from a biologist who swabbed surfaces cleaned with a variety of diy cleaners, including some made with essential oils. The only surfaces that actually were disinfected were those cleaned with bleach, undiluted essential oil, and hydrogen peroxide straight out of the bottle.

It totally depends what cleansers to use on what you're are cleaning! I took medical micro and we did an experiment on what house cleaners work best on a variety of living bacteria. This channel does promote good diy's and she includes hydrogen peroxide and a variety of other decent cleansers like vinegar and baking soda in certain diy's but again it depends on the surface (if it will get damaged) and there isn't one thing that takes care of all bacteria! Different cleansers kill different bacteria. ❤️
I don’t need a completely disinfected/ sterile /germ free home . I just need a clean home .I use mostly diy cleaners in my home . I use commercial cleaners very very rarely and only when a diy cleaner isn’t enough for the job . My home is very clean and my family rarely gets sick I make sure my kids wash their hands with warm water and soap because that is the most efficient way of preventing illness. Plus I’ve been around plenty of Crazy Lysol/Bleach disinfecting cleaning obsessed lady’s in my life to never want to become one .
i find i only need a short list of supplies for cleaning other than awesome cloths and dish soap.... water for boiling and in steam form, oranges, lemon, baking soda, white vinegar, hydrogen peroxide in a spray bottle. there are many natural alternatives, but that is all i need. ;) i might have to try a couple of these.
We use TONs of natural cleaning items w/our EO's (daughter is an adviser) We try to buy cruelty free products as they are usually non-toxic, natural or biodegradable and renewable. A great tool is the Cruelty Cutter app. It is surprising how many product, including make-up are tested on animals!
I have a solution of apple cider vinegar, water and dish soap that I use as all purpose cleaner to clean my toilet, sink, tiles and glass splash back etc. i love it!

Pet peeve: when people don't close the toilet lid before flushing! 🤢 GROSS! Please talk about this if you haven't already, because I see this all the time. The toilet lid should be closed at all times unless in use.

I had rust marks on my steak knives. I bought a couple bottles of coke, I et the blades sit in the Cole cola for two hours. Then scrubbed the blades with a scouring wand. It worked!

I've used the combination baking soda/detergent/vinegar/peroxide for as long as I can remember, almost 30 years now. Any of the combinations will work as a charm for almost anything. While I hate bleach, in Argentina there's a gel bleach that I use more than ever. And for disinfecting surfaces I love Lysoform in liquid version. So my cleaning things are very little and extremely effective!
Your videos are amazing! But I cannot stand the smell of vinegar so I started looking for better smelling, natural, chemical free cleaners and found Thieves cleaner by Young Living!! I use it for everything and it’s a degreaser and cleans just as good as bleach but is so safe that you could drink it and not get sick! My drain clogged up and we had to hire a plumber. I had to sign a statement saying that I used drain cleaner and they would not be responsible if the pipe burst or was otherwise damaged. Wish I had seen this video first. My husband is finally convinced that grease starts with a "g" for putting in the garbage and not the drain.
Yeah never pour grease in your sink. Use paper towels, napkins, old newspapers or pour the grease in a non recyclable container and throw it in the garbage.
Millennials are funny to listen to. PH is PH so concentrated vinegar is no more or less dangerous than watered down Sulfuric or Hydrochloric acid. If you're worried about the safety of Hydrochloric acid please have your stomach removed and find a DIY way to live without it since it's filled with Hydrochloric acid, Sodium Chloride (table salt) and Potassium Chloride (sold as salt substitute). Baking soda is a mild base (alkali) Vinegar is a mild acid, mixing the two produces a mild chemical (exothermic) reaction (it gets hot) and chemicals also often react with water (hydrogen = explosive, oxygen = oxidizer) so HOT water can act as a catalyst that accelerates exothermic reactions. Bleach (Sodium Hypochlorite) is caustic, Salt (Sodium Chloride) is also caustic. (that means it is such a strong oxidizer that it can corrode things). Hydrogen Peroxide, Sodium Carbonate (washing soda) and Sodium Percarbonate (the combination of Hydrogen Peroxide and Sodium Carbonate) are oxidizers which are not caustic. If you want to make a DIY cleaner put Baking Soda in a pan and heat it until you drive off all the water changing it from Sodium Bicarbonate, to Sodium Carbonate. Then put it in a sealed container (because it's hydroscopic which just means it will absorb moisture from the atmosphere and go back to being Baking Soda if you don't) Lye (Sodium Hydroxide) is a stronger base than baking soda (Sodium Bicarbonate) which is why it's one of two typically used for drain cleaner (the other is Sulfuric acid). So don't mix different brands of drain cleaner without knowing what's in them because adding a strong acid to a strong base in the presence of an oxidizer like water will cause a violent exothermic reaction ("flash" boiling and/or explosion). It can also cause a secondary reaction between sulfuric acid and water creating hydrogen sulfide gas which can be fatal. Decreasing the concentration also decreases the effectiveness so if you want less "danger" use smaller amounts and be patient. Both substances will get the job done and the only real difference is: "how long will it take". The bottom line is "safety" is much less about the type of CHEMICALS used and more about the CONCENTRATION (or the PH) of those chemicals involved.
Basic science, people! Love clean my space, but please pay attention to basic science. Baking soda and vinegar shouldn't be mixed unless you want something as effective as water.

My fave cleaner for rust on cars, and vintage hubcaps is several grades of fine steel wool pads dipped in Coca Cola. I used this method to clean, and de rust the legs of a vintage charcoal grill.
I like your all purpose cleaner. I use lavender as Tea tree oil and citrus essential oils are toxic to cats snd dogs. I have cats in my house so I use lavender which is good
There's a product called "Deo-go" antiperspirant and stain remover. I've been using it for years. It will take 100% of the yellow pit stains out of white shirts every time. There's directions on the bottle, but I just spray it on, and gently rub it in with a toothbrush. I've used it on every fabric but pure silk. It has never failed me.
It's not deodorant that is staining, it is the antiperspirant. Soaking in Oxiclean helps. Or switch to a product that only says "deodorant" and does not state "antiperspirant"
in a bucket with water add vinegar and baking soda. it will make bubbles. soak the shirts overnight and launder as usual. this will remove the stains.. if the stains are very bad just repeat as needed. the sweat may have faded the color in the armpit. no help for that.
I ran out of toilet bowl cleaner a few months ago and have just been using Bon Ami and Dr. Bronner's soap. I think I'll try out your recipe soon!! Also I totally used the tip of putting a microfiber cloth on a swiffer to clean the shower and also walls in your home and whoa amazing and so disgusting considering I didn't think my bedroom walls looked dirty at all!! It was like ripping a Biore strip off your nose! haha
Great recipes, Melissa! I was particularly looking for hydrogen peroxide recipes that will kill the norovirus, after a particularly hellish stomach flu. I am not sure if the proportions of the DIY cleaner here will specifically address that problem, so I would love to see that brought up in another video. my favourite diy cleaner is the multipurpose spray, multipurpose sprays always trigger my allergies, but my diy one never has. and I think it's the same as yours, 30ml dishwash/baking soda and 50/50 vinegar/water in a 500ml soray bottle I bought especially lol

I don't feel like I've cleaned if I don't use bleach.. I use it in the bathroom, kitchen, counter tops.. I almost always use gloves. I tried a number of your diy cleaners.. I liked them a lot, but bleach is bae lol.
I haven't used bleach in while and I haven't looked back. I used to use it for toilets and bath tubs, but I found the DIY recipes actually worked better, particularly for my bath tubs!
I read two dogs died from bleach. Its owner cleaned with bleach and the inhalation killed the dogs once an autopsy confirmed. I use strong 20 percent vinegar to clean. Remember vinegar kills 99 percent of bacteria. Bleach kills 98 percent.
Bleach is extremely hazardous to your respiratory system and what makes it worst is that when people use it they don’t dilute it enough. I’ve read people use bleach diluted 1/1 with water .That’s insane !! If you are using bleach to sanitize the most that should be used is 1/2 cup of bleach to a gallon of water . But if you use bleach to just “clean” than it’s pretty pointless because bleach doesn’t clean it just deodorizes and whitens but doesn’t remove dirt or debris .
Hi Melissa,thank you, I have two kids,and I'm currently pregnant,so can't use any chemicals,and inhale that. I also don't like to think about what some products leave behind and kids touching that so I like natural diy cleaners.
I hate using chemicals to clean. But I have cancer & my immune system is compromised. So I still use bleach to disinfect my counters as I need to be extremely careful about bacteria. I also have to make sure everything is rinsed thoroughly after I bleach the counters. I haven't found any alternatives that I feel confident enough about to replace the bleach.

I use car wax on the shower doors after they're cleaned. It repels the water and prevents hard water stains.🤔
Since vinegar breaks down soap, I think the elbow grease from your scrubbing brush is what is really doing the work.

The all purpose cleaner is one of my favorite recipes. Orange, lemon, lavender are a few of my favorite Essential oil to use.
My favorite DIY cleaner is 1 part white vinegar to 2 parts water. It is excellent for quickly wiping counters and as a base for baking soda cleansers. You can also add 1 part hydrogen peroxide to the base mix, put in a spray bottle and spray it on pesty concrete mould. Do this in the morning on a warm sunny day and the mould will be gone in 24 -48 hours. Loooove it!

My favorite diy recipe is the all purpose cleaner. One cup of white vinegar, one cup of water and a few drops of dish soap. It literally cleans everything and sometimes i put a few drops of lemon grass essential oil to make it smell good. I love all your diy cleaners and I have gotten rid of all the toxic ones. I feel a lot better when the grandkids are around
Add me to all who love that blouse! My favorite DIY's are the (so-called) toilet bombs , dishwasher detergent & laundry detergent I make. I keep a container of the toilet bombs in both bathrooms & toss 1 in the toilets daily. I mix baking soda, citric acid, a few drops of essential oil ( I use lemon or grapefruit or peppermint most often)...then just a small amount of water.
I put mixture into a silicone ice cube tray. let it sit until next day. Pop them out, put them in container. They really do a great job keeping toilets fresh & clean.
I would suggest spritzing water into mixture...just a little at a time...too much water causes an overflow after the mixture is in a mold. It needs very little water. I make them often because I toss one in our toilets daily.

my favorit recipe for cleaning my shower (walls), my kitchen and fridge and more is this: in a bottle add some dishwashing soap (I use 1 tablespoon or so), then I fill the bottle half way up with water and add table vinegar (5%). just remember to shake the bottle before using it 😊😊
where I live there is a lot of calcium in the water which leaves a lot of residue. the vinegar takes care of this and the soap cleanes 😊

I don't use many DIY recipes for cleaning. However, for dusting my wooden furniture and doors I always use the following recipe: I add some water in a big enough container and to that I add some fabric softener, then I wet a cleaning cloth with the mixture, wring out the excess water, dust and repeat the process. The wet cloth takes away the dust effectively and the fabric softener makes sure that there aren't any streaks left on the furniture. Recently I also added some Detol in a particularly dirty room that desperately needed to be disinfected.

for SMALL greasy areas I use the eraser sponge by mr clean. It doesn't need any cleaning solution, just water. it takes off the grease like a charm!

I love any natural cleaner because of my respiratory problems i can't use harsh chemicals so i have wrote down all of your DIY recipes and am going to try them. Hopefully i won't be spending several days recovering then have to do it all over again. It is a never ending cycle of. Cleaning a big nasty apartment that has piled up then recovering from respiratory problems and skin irritations just for the mess to have piled up again. So thank you for alternatives to stop this cycle.
My favorite shower cleaner ( hope this is not toxic )..Ammonia and dawn dish soap , fill the spay bottle up halfway with Ammonia and squeeze in Dawn ( 2 good squeezes ) shake and spay shower , let sit for 20 min if you can and rinse..I did not do research on ammonia so hoping its safe love the diy cleaner
My 94yr. old Grandmother to this day still uses vinegar for her fabric softener in her laundry, I do as well. She also kept their door from their outhouse and it's been in her flower bed full of Lilies for many many years.

Clean My Space Love the degreaser. Mixed some up to clean my stove top and knobs. A 20 yr old + stove top is looking shiny again. This stuff cleans better than an industrial strength degreaser I've tried in the past. Plus the scent is amazing!
I have been using all the cleaners available in the market such as Lysol and Scrubbing bubbles. The smell is so intense that I can't breathe. I'm surely goin to give the DIY recipes a try. Thank you for such informative videos.
The oven cleaning method works great! I let my fiancé do the task with reading this chapter in her book and the results were unbelievable! My father tried to clean the oven with the regular store version and it wasn’t even close to be clean like in Melisa’s method! Recommend 👍
And my favorite diy is the one for glasses and windows! Changed my life, showed it to my mother and she got exited! I sometimes use it as a fast all purpose cleaner and it works as well
Sodium hydroxide is used for soap making. After the saponification process and curing it is safe to use on our skin. It can also be found in some beauty products, etc lotions for your face. I do love the home made recipes.
Hi Melissa! My favourite diy cleaner is: talc powder to remove oil or oily stain of clothes. Leave the stain dry (i.e.: do not soak it in water!) sprinkle with heavy layer of talc powder, let sit for at least an hour of two, brush away and launder as normal. That should do the trick!
Also, getting rid of chewing gum that got stuck to clothes! It sounds insane but freeze - yes! Freeze the garment overnight in the freezer, the chewing gum will freeze too and the next day you can gently scrape it away and launder as normal! The joys of having children 😂😂😂
I had a lot of trouble with my kitchen sink clogging. I tried all natural declogging stuff but it wasn't working. So I tried 1cup of baking soda, I made sure it was all in the drain, then added 1cup of white vinager to the drain and quickly closed it because the fumes from the baking soda and vinager are quite strong. Let it sit for about an hour and rinse with hot water. It work well for my sink.
I guess because I grew up with bleach from my grandmother that is why I use it. My father taught me when I started helping the family clean as a youth to NEVER ever ever mix products especially bleach. I just believed him and never did it. I learned in school it can be a disinfectant or sanitizer depending on ratios. I agree vinegar is a great cheap disinfectant as well depending on ratios because the smell can get to me. My favorite daily cleanser I use all over the house is a spray bottle about 16 oz...add 1 tbsp of liquid soap, 1/4 cup bleach and fill the rest with water. You can add lemon essential oils like 20 drops. Lemon is my favorite. I have been using for about 2 years now. I want to start using your other ideas now!

I love my all purpose cleaning. I make it with marseille soap. I just grate a little bit from the block of marseille soap and melt it with some hot water. I ad about 4 teaspoons of baking soda. I will put the ingredients in a spray bottle. Then i fill up the rest of the bottle with water and put some lemongrass oil in there and shake it before use.
My counters and tables get sprayed with hydrogen peroxide(a great disinfectant), my floors with vinegar, my mirrors with rubbing alcohol, and any dusty surfaces with diluted vinegar. I do use commercial toilet bowl cleaner and I do spray my sink out with bleach. There's very few things that can disinfect as well as bleach. I find that making your own cleaners saves a lot of money. I'm a clean freak and I have a toddler so I would go through a bottle of multipurpose cleaner in two weeks.
cleaning the oven: use a good product for vitroceramic. also spray grease remover, use a sponge and let a few minutes. then use a scraper. finally, wipe. this technique also works for very dirty pans.
Yes if you're comfortable with using chemicals properly AND you don't pollute when you dispose of them...

This isn't a DIY but I love this all purpose cleaner called Odoban they use eucalyptus as their main saler.
A large bottle of hydrogen peroxide poured into a spray bottle with 5-8 tablespoons of original Dawn dish soap added to it. Works well for the kitchen and on some spots for spot removal. Use with baking soda for the bath tub and sink.

Love these diys, buuuuuuuuuuut most of them will not disinfect/kill bacteria. My microbiology professor had us use "diy or alternative" cleaners and it did little to nothing. So keep this in mind when cleaning certain surfaces!
ReginasDoseOfBeauty Totally true. I saw a blog post from a biologist who swabbed surfaces cleaned with a variety of diy cleaners, including some made with essential oils. The only surfaces that actually were disinfected were those cleaned with bleach, undiluted essential oil, and hydrogen peroxide straight out of the bottle.

It totally depends what cleansers to use on what you're are cleaning! I took medical micro and we did an experiment on what house cleaners work best on a variety of living bacteria. This channel does promote good diy's and she includes hydrogen peroxide and a variety of other decent cleansers like vinegar and baking soda in certain diy's but again it depends on the surface (if it will get damaged) and there isn't one thing that takes care of all bacteria! Different cleansers kill different bacteria. ❤️
I don’t need a completely disinfected/ sterile /germ free home . I just need a clean home .I use mostly diy cleaners in my home . I use commercial cleaners very very rarely and only when a diy cleaner isn’t enough for the job . My home is very clean and my family rarely gets sick I make sure my kids wash their hands with warm water and soap because that is the most efficient way of preventing illness. Plus I’ve been around plenty of Crazy Lysol/Bleach disinfecting cleaning obsessed lady’s in my life to never want to become one .
i find i only need a short list of supplies for cleaning other than awesome cloths and dish soap.... water for boiling and in steam form, oranges, lemon, baking soda, white vinegar, hydrogen peroxide in a spray bottle. there are many natural alternatives, but that is all i need. ;) i might have to try a couple of these.
We use TONs of natural cleaning items w/our EO's (daughter is an adviser) We try to buy cruelty free products as they are usually non-toxic, natural or biodegradable and renewable. A great tool is the Cruelty Cutter app. It is surprising how many product, including make-up are tested on animals!

Baking soda and heated vinegar works great for drains as well.
lemon salt is great bleach for white clothes and hard water residue on faucets. just make a paste with vinegar apply then scrub :)

Pet peeve: when people don't close the toilet lid before flushing! 🤢 GROSS! Please talk about this if you haven't already, because I see this all the time. The toilet lid should be closed at all times unless in use.

I had rust marks on my steak knives. I bought a couple bottles of coke, I et the blades sit in the Cole cola for two hours. Then scrubbed the blades with a scouring wand. It worked!

I've used the combination baking soda/detergent/vinegar/peroxide for as long as I can remember, almost 30 years now. Any of the combinations will work as a charm for almost anything. While I hate bleach, in Argentina there's a gel bleach that I use more than ever. And for disinfecting surfaces I love Lysoform in liquid version. So my cleaning things are very little and extremely effective!
But not natural and environmentally friendly, I think that was the focus of her recipes.
Your videos are amazing! But I cannot stand the smell of vinegar so I started looking for better smelling, natural, chemical free cleaners and found Thieves cleaner by Young Living!! I use it for everything and it’s a degreaser and cleans just as good as bleach but is so safe that you could drink it and not get sick! My drain clogged up and we had to hire a plumber. I had to sign a statement saying that I used drain cleaner and they would not be responsible if the pipe burst or was otherwise damaged. Wish I had seen this video first. My husband is finally convinced that grease starts with a "g" for putting in the garbage and not the drain.
Yeah never pour grease in your sink. Use paper towels, napkins, old newspapers or pour the grease in a non recyclable container and throw it in the garbage.

Millennials are funny to listen to. PH is PH so concentrated vinegar is no more or less dangerous than watered down Sulfuric or Hydrochloric acid. If you're worried about the safety of Hydrochloric acid please have your stomach removed and find a DIY way to live without it since it's filled with Hydrochloric acid, Sodium Chloride (table salt) and Potassium Chloride (sold as salt substitute).
Baking soda is a mild base (alkali) Vinegar is a mild acid, mixing the two produces a mild chemical (exothermic) reaction (it gets hot) and chemicals also often react with water (hydrogen = explosive, oxygen = oxidizer) so HOT water can act as a catalyst that accelerates exothermic reactions.
Bleach (Sodium Hypochlorite) is caustic, Salt (Sodium Chloride) is also caustic. (that means it is such a strong oxidizer that it can corrode things).
Hydrogen Peroxide, Sodium Carbonate (washing soda) and Sodium Percarbonate (the combination of Hydrogen Peroxide and Sodium Carbonate) are oxidizers which are not caustic. If you want to make a DIY cleaner put Baking Soda in a pan and heat it until you drive off all the water changing it from Sodium Bicarbonate, to Sodium Carbonate. Then put it in a sealed container (because it's hydroscopic which just means it will absorb moisture from the atmosphere and go back to being Baking Soda if you don't)
Lye (Sodium Hydroxide) is a stronger base than baking soda (Sodium Bicarbonate) which is why it's one of two typically used for drain cleaner (the other is Sulfuric acid). So don't mix different brands of drain cleaner without knowing what's in them because adding a strong acid to a strong base in the presence of an oxidizer like water will cause a violent exothermic reaction ("flash" boiling and/or explosion). It can also cause a secondary reaction between sulfuric acid and water creating hydrogen sulfide gas which can be fatal.
Decreasing the concentration also decreases the effectiveness so if you want less "danger" use smaller amounts and be patient. Both substances will get the job done and the only real difference is: "how long will it take".
The bottom line is "safety" is much less about the type of CHEMICALS used and more about the CONCENTRATION (or the PH) of those chemicals involved.

My fave cleaner for rust on cars, and vintage hubcaps is several grades of fine steel wool pads dipped in Coca Cola. I used this method to clean, and de rust the legs of a vintage charcoal grill.

There's a product called "Deo-go" antiperspirant and stain remover. I've been using it for years. It will take 100% of the yellow pit stains out of white shirts every time. There's directions on the bottle, but I just spray it on, and gently rub it in with a toothbrush. I've used it on every fabric but pure silk. It has never failed me.
It's not deodorant that is staining, it is the antiperspirant. Soaking in Oxiclean helps.
Or switch to a product that only says "deodorant" and does not state "antiperspirant"
in a bucket with water add vinegar and baking soda. it will make bubbles. soak the shirts overnight and launder as usual. this will remove the stains.. if the stains are very bad just repeat as needed. the sweat may have faded the color in the armpit. no help for that.
I ran out of toilet bowl cleaner a few months ago and have just been using Bon Ami and Dr. Bronner's soap. I think I'll try out your recipe soon!!
Also I totally used the tip of putting a microfiber cloth on a swiffer to clean the shower and also walls in your home and whoa amazing and so disgusting considering I didn't think my bedroom walls looked dirty at all!! It was like ripping a Biore strip off your nose! haha
Great recipes, Melissa! I was particularly looking for hydrogen peroxide recipes that will kill the norovirus, after a particularly hellish stomach flu. I am not sure if the proportions of the DIY cleaner here will specifically address that problem, so I would love to see that brought up in another video. my favourite diy cleaner is the multipurpose spray, multipurpose sprays always trigger my allergies, but my diy one never has. and I think it's the same as yours, 30ml dishwash/baking soda and 50/50 vinegar/water in a 500ml soray bottle I bought especially lol

I don't feel like I've cleaned if I don't use bleach.. I use it in the bathroom, kitchen, counter tops.. I almost always use gloves. I tried a number of your diy cleaners.. I liked them a lot, but bleach is bae lol.
I haven't used bleach in while and I haven't looked back. I used to use it for toilets and bath tubs, but I found the DIY recipes actually worked better, particularly for my bath tubs!
I read two dogs died from bleach. Its owner cleaned with bleach and the inhalation killed the dogs once an autopsy confirmed. I use strong 20 percent vinegar to clean. Remember vinegar kills 99 percent of bacteria. Bleach kills 98 percent.
Bleach is extremely hazardous to your respiratory system and what makes it worst is that when people use it they don’t dilute it enough. I’ve read people use bleach diluted 1/1 with water .That’s insane !! If you are using bleach to sanitize the most that should be used is 1/2 cup of bleach to a gallon of water . But if you use bleach to just “clean” than it’s pretty pointless because bleach doesn’t clean it just deodorizes and whitens but doesn’t remove dirt or debris .

Hi Melissa,thank you, I have two kids,and I'm currently pregnant,so can't use any chemicals,and inhale that. I also don't like to think about what some products leave behind and kids touching that so I like natural diy cleaners.
I hate using chemicals to clean. But I have cancer & my immune system is compromised. So I still use bleach to disinfect my counters as I need to be extremely careful about bacteria. I also have to make sure everything is rinsed thoroughly after I bleach the counters. I haven't found any alternatives that I feel confident enough about to replace the bleach.
