Simple, Compact Camp Kitchen: Building the Box
Вставка
- Опубліковано 28 вер 2024
- I'm out here trying to get out in nature more, but my gear needs a serious upgrade. So I knocked out a camp kitchen / chuckbox / patrol box to organize my cooking gear, and store some basics (oil, sugar, COFFEE, etc.).
I didn't want to spent a lot of effort doing joinery, so I took many shortcuts, such as using a lot of braces, and using inexpensive tubs on rails, instead of building drawers.
I wanted something I can deploy in a few different scenarios, and doesn't take up any more room that a plastic storage tote. Since my partner's idea of camping is a 3 star hotel, it's just going to be me out there, for 1-2 nights, it's fairly compact.
FINISHED DIMENSIONS:
22.5" wide x 20" tall x 13" deep
Main / drawer compartment is 17" of the total width
Pantry is 5" of the total width
Stove compartment is 4" of the total height
👌 Wow! Great camp kitchen- Chuck box!
Caravan Carolyn suggested a visit. Here I am! She loves your camp kitchen. So do I. Great project.
From a retired carpenter with 26 years experience. Nice job!
Wow, thanks!
You’re an inspiration.. thank you for this video 😍💕👍🏽🇦🇺👏🏽
I'm watching it in Korea.
I'm getting ready to go car camping.
You're Awesome. 😊😊😊
No you're awesome! 🫵 I hope I did not embarrass myself too much in this video 🫣 : ua-cam.com/video/2iEUNUDVuB8/v-deo.html
Ah, this is exactly what i have been looking for!! I might steal some of your solutions. Thank you for sharing!!
Cool design and of course you are tickled pink with it!! Campervan Carolyn said it would be neat. Spot on 🌾🌻🌾
Great job love the ninja lumber headband!tip...support wood when using skillsaw. Scarp, vlamps, box whatever even hubbies fingers..much safer.
Keeps my hair out of my eyes! 😂 And yes... excellent safety tip 👍
Caravan Carolyn, told me about your channel.
I enjoyed your video. Looking forward to seeing part two. (An amazing idea)
Thanks for sharing!
That looks awesome . Great job .
Wowwww ! Congratulations!! Great job!! Thanks for sharing

Cheers from Spain
I found you on Carvava Carolyn. Love the whole chuck box thing.
New sub from Caravan Carolyn! Hugs from Goodyear, AZ!
Hey neighbor!
Simple? Hmmm! I guess I'll first need to make a gift list of power tools needed to make this beauty. At least I'll have relevant instructions. Saving... pennies and video. 😊 Thank you.
I think it could all be done with 2 tools: the saw of your choice (circular, table, or jigsaw) and a drill. 🤔
Cutting the hinge was easy with an angle grinder, but I have seen someone do it with a jigsaw, fitted with a blade for metal. If you have the patience and energy, it could probably be done with a hacksaw. However, my angle grinder was about $10-$15 from Harbor Freight, and I have used it for so many projects!
The brad nailing could certainly be replaced with a few well-placed screws. I just really enjoy using the brad nailer. PEW PEW PEW! 😄
But don't let that stop you from getting any and all of the tools you might "need". 😉😉😉
@@ShoestringMartha thank you. I’m inspired.
The best kind of plywood is alley found plywood!
I like your sensibility.
Wow. You really know your way around tools and woodworking. Love it!
LOL thanks - I make a lot of mistakes, but I try!
Very well done! My philosophy....does it work? yes. Is it perfectly plumb, square, and true....If no....doe sit work? :-) If yes...bonus!
Thank you -- totally borrowing your philosophy! 😀
Regarding precision (or lack thereof), my philosophy is:
“It’s not like it’s going to the moon.”
I love it!
You should sell these as a second income. Caravan Carolyn sent me and she was right I did enjoy your video.
Caravan Carolyn sent me..
Don't forget to paint it. Makes it waterproof.
I love the look of plywood, so I just went with polyureythane. 😊
Add a piece of cement board under the stove. It will scorch the timber. 😄
Great tip! I happen to have a scrap in the garage! I'll have to see if there is enough vertical space in the compartment to fit it. 🤔 This last trip, I think I used the metal fold-down tray and the separate mini table a lot for the stove, so that reduced the heat exposure a bit.
Hi, like the build looking to build one myself. What program did you use to make the design and cut list. Would really appreciate it. Thanks!
I used Sketch (which is different from SketchUp or SketchApp) . It’s not really intended for plans. But I had it and am familiar with it, since I used it for work as a UX Designer 😀
Joli !

Pocket holes
I tried at the beginning but it was my first time trying it and kept busting through the plywood.
I like your layout. Too funny when you said, I made the grain match,
I'm not a Savage.
Hi Martha came over from Carolyn,, my daughter and I go camping starting in April till end of October,,do to I’m in Ontario Canada 🇨🇦,,
"...because I'm not a savage." This cracked me up. Edited to add: kitty verified lack of savagery
😄 😄 😄 Douglas has excellent design sense!
I heard that too!
Me too😂😂😂
2:16 The Ghost of Handy Man Past...in shock. Lol. Taking notes myself. Thank you for uploading all the steps. Does the hot plate still fit on the shelf when the fuel cylinder is in place? (I've noticed elsewhere that it sticks out a bit once inserted for use).
Yes! With this stove, the fuel cylinder fits entirely within its compartment. It means the stove is a little larger than some of those really compact ones that are out there. I also only use butane. It is capable of using propane, and has a hose to connect to one externally. I like having that ability, in case I can't locate butane, or for very cold weather.
@@ShoestringMartha Very good info, thank you. And thank you for answering. And uploading. I get stuck on a query, and forget to thank video posters for the enormous amount of work they go to, to upload a video. 🙂
Like a lot of others, I too saw Carolyn mentioned your channel and had to come by and check it out. I've been thinking of making a kitchen camp box myself! Thanks for some good ideas!
That thing where it requires a beer bottle to swing open the side is one of the most creative ideas I've ever seen!
Pay the toll of you wanna eat! 🍺
Hey there, cool Kitchen Chuck Box. I saw your video referral on Caravan Carolyn's post. Good job!
I have the camping kitchen box my father made in around 1947. 13 deep, 16 high and 26 long. Has shelves and 1 drawer. Unlike yours, it was just for cooking and eating tools, silverware, plates, mixing bowl, fry pan coffee pot, etc. Its 1/4 plywood with 2 doors on front. Must have 10 layers of old time varnish on it.
It sounds perfect - what a treasure to have! 😍
3:45 Seen a fair few DIY wood work projects myself and have seen plenty people who drive nails even when they glue. They say the glue is what binds and the nails hold the pieces together while the glue dries. The added brace just upgraded this to earthquake grade!
Campervan Carolyn told us about your box COOL 👍❤️😇

Hi. I came over from Carolyn's to see your project and it looks like what I need too! Thanks for sharing your ideas.
Hi! Caravan Carolyn suggested your channel. She says, “Hi!”
This is a lovely video, thank you for showing everything in detail (like the flathead/roundhead screws... seems simple but its a detail that could save me a lot of frustration).
one thing though... would you please for the love of god put the safetybracket back on your anglegrinder? those cutting disks can explode and they will do some severe damage.
thanks for the helpful upload!:)
Thank you! It actually broke off, so that I couldn't put it back on. The thing died entirely, sometime after making the video (HFT garbage!). We now have a cordless Ryobi -- with a guard.
At least put a phone book under your shirt
"head to HD for some ply...OH, ARE YOU KIDDING ME"! Too funny. Nice Video and good instructions!
Every. Dang. Time. 😂
Judy was correct I left my ass off when you said you made the grain match because you weren’t a savage. Love your layout not one of those super micro builds where you got to have $10,000 worth of tools to even do it
Very cool! Thanks for sharing I am about to build a very similar one.
Protip if you are lazy like me is to make a list of your panel sizes and get home depot to cut them for you. Their big saw does a better job than you could at home. They also never charge the cuts in my experience. If you are nice to the operator at all they always just wave you off .. they don't seem to want to do any paperwork lol.
I always zip them together with pocket screws and always amazed how quickly it comes together and how strong the end product is.
came from Caravan Carolyn...she praises your channel and chuck box. subscribed...binging now.. :D
Hello from Caravan Carolyn. I am a widowed want to be easy van camper/trailer. I am from Oklahoma👋
Heard about from Caroline. Great chuck box..😃
I have Build something else for my Opel Frontera (in US Isuzu Rodeo).
Greatings from Germany!
Nice! As a former 60 series Land Cruiser owner, I can appreciate a boxy wagon 👏
Yeah, you have enough room, wenn the Rear seats are down. 1,65m in lenght!
I love the Frontera.
The Offroad capability is Good enough (with higher Suspension, 1“Bl and 31“Tires) for my use.
I have also built the Kitchen for Inside and Outside use.
Id have Stands from a Bierzeltgarnitur.
Heard about your grub box from Caravan Carolyn. You did a great job on it. New subscriber here. Carolyn says hi. 👋
Welcome!!
Hi I`m from Caravan Carolyn`s channel as well! She said to say Hi!!
Caravan Carolyn sent a bunch of us over. I have been wanting to build a camp kitchen for a few years. Digging stuff out of a plastic bin is a pain.
Welcome -- and AGREED!
Love the wine glass holder!! Most of these are built by dudes and they just don’t have a feature like that! I also like your note about the totes. That said, I’d say you are a darn fine woodworker!!
Thank you! It's all about priorities 😄🍷
New Sub from Campervan Carolyn! She says to say HI!
👋👋👋😁 Hiyyyyaaaa!!
for me I have made checkbox in the past and showed it to some people I want to in my home lumberyard store in my area like Home Depot or Lowe’s cut down my wood You should ask at Home Depot lumber department cut down the word any charter do you want one of the comfrey the rules you do have to pay make it like Paula easier and quicker
Hi! I'm from Caravan Carolyn's channel!
Thank you for making this video. I have my wood cut. Most of my hardwear and soon also will have a camping kitchen box. I did put some stencils on the outside.
Best of luck with your build -- the stencils will be a really beautiful touch!
Wow, I might use this for kitchen but at one point I had an awe awe moment. This would be great for my kitty box and put her bed on top. I know she would use the litter box but not sure if she would be happy with her own space, especially since she owns everything.
Great idea! Totally understand -- we have a feline queen as well. 😺
you make i good bit more snug or pull you up one burner stove it’s going to slide back-and-forth when your car is moving on the road
Really terrific ideas!
I just stumbled across your channel and boy am I glad I did. What a fantastic idea! Thanks for sharing
Hiya and welcome aboard!
I put 2x10 or 2x12 on my metal sawhorses and cut them a few inches longer so I have mini work bench that clamps can be used on. Put 2 or 3 together for a bit bigger work bench/ table. Can also screw the saw horses to short scrap countertops. Those countertops are usually available at Restore locations and usually quite inexpensive.
Very nice! We finally have sawhorses, and sometimes, even plywood to put on top of them. I also freed up a folding table that was functioning as our miter saw stand, so I have way more -- and way safer -- work surfaces choices now. Thank goodness! (Also I love ReStore).
Same, but I got a 2" pink foam insulation board to put on top. The circular saw cuts into that instead of the plywood top
Nice!! Greetings from Argentina 🇦🇷
Great job, it looks awesome!!! Curious though - how much does it weigh approximately? How are you securing it so it doesn't become a projectile if you have an accident?
I’d say 40lbs, loaded. I don’t secure anything, but if I did, I’d run a strap through the handles to the cargo attachment points in the floor.
@@ShoestringMartha Got it. Thank you so much for promptly answering my question. I might be able to lift 40 lbs for when I need to just have my van. Great idea, and you did an amazing job! Enjoy your adventures, stay safe.
This is an awesome box. I giggle at some of your real life authentic comments too. I got super excited when I saw the use of trofast bins. My kidlets are all grown and I actually have the tall Trofast frame and a couple of bins. I am going to use this for my kitchen box frame, get a couple of lids for the old bins (so glad Ikea still makes them), and add a front drop down "table" with a chain that will act as the door to hold on my stuff in it. I may try to add a swing out pantry like you did. Again, awesome!
Sounds like a great plan! A drop table will definitely give you way more surface area to work on. One thing that I thought of afterward, was I wonder if it would have been better to have the drawers pull out laterally, as opposed to long ways, for better access. Something to consider. 🤔 Best of luck with your build!
Danke für diese tolle Anleitung! 😊
Ich wünsche allzeit eine gute Reise.. 🥾💚
Thank you, and to you as well! 😊
Simple box, thank you
Awesome job! I think I can do it too!☺️✌️✨❤️

Very nice! Corey, you are so talented!!
Mine is made out of an old dynamite box by my cousin’s grandfather, it’s the perfect size for kitchen stuff, though not the stove itself
Love the aesthetic - sounds like a dynamite design! 🧨🧨🧨
Hi- Caravan Carolyn sent me.
🍀HI Caravan Carolyn sent me,she's awesome. Love what you building. That would be something Carolyn could use! Take Care!💙🌸🙏🌸🙏
Okay this is hysterical. I never heard of this caravan Carolyn that I reading here in the comments. Nice build.
I hadn't either until she mentioned me in a video. She does have an entertaining channel, and clearly, a fun and enthusiastic following. 😂 😂 😂
Nicely done, and nicely shot (video).
Caravan Carolyn sent me (she said to tell you that!) and I have to agree with her----this field kitchen is BRILLIANT!
7:00. You should add a rest for the lid. All that weight on the hinging mechanism can lead to premature failure
I sort of did, just by accident! The pantry kept swinging out too wide, so I added a small block to the top of the lid, that rests on a magnet on the top edge of the pantry -- supports the lid, and keeps the pantry in place.
Big like for your nice and helpfull box..Great work
That’s a really cool kitchen!
Caravan Carolyn mentioned your channel and chuckbox. Had to stop by (and subscribe!) to check it out.
Very well done build Martha! The plastic bins as drawers is just so thoughtful for weight savings..I was doing something similar but with built drawers instead. I’m not handy by any means…so my one and only attempt at building the drawer system for my rig was a real learning experience lol. I missed quite a few structural reinforcements I see you implementing that seem so basic and fundamental in nature, that would’ve totally made my build more worth while. Also, without any legitimate power tools or workshop, I had Home Depot do the big plywood cuts, and then rented power tools and/or did the rest of the build by hand on a make shift plywood work table on the ground lol. Don’t think I’ll attempt V2.0 until I have at least the tools & infrastructure you have.
Way to make it happen, even with limitations! Many people wouldn't even try. 👏👏👏 Bins are great for saving weight, but also, I just really hate / am not very good at building drawers. I will get out of it any way that I can 😂
Thank you! I've always wanted to build one of these. Not only do you show how to build it, you show how to plan it.
Found you on caravan Caroline and she is right, you are very clever and handy. This was a great idea for traveling.
I’m so glad you posted this! I’ve been looking for something like your idea. I loved the clip of Ross yelling, “Pivot!” A great little memory from….back in the day. I can’t believe I even wrote that but, I’m still in denial about getting older. I also appreciate your showing the clip of you wearing a headband…as a gardener I can drip buckets from my head…something that is so unexpected. Just nother reason I wear a hat :). Thanks
LOL aren't we all in denial about that 😄 I often wear a bandana in the summer, either on my head or around my neck. I soak it in water first, so it's like my own personal evaporative cooler -- classic desert rat trick 😉
Nice work Martha ! Hope to make mine soon too !
CC sent me!
Neet camp kitchen looking forward to see how you fully set it up 😊
Really nice Vid... Just watch and relax 👍👍👍
love the attitude and approach - late to party but good luck going forward from NZ
Thank you! 😊
Same here. Glad I found this helpful video!
@@ShoestringMarthahope you make more videos! ❤
I agree, plastic bins instead of wooden drawers. Faster, less expensive, and lighter. Even my homemade teardrop trailer has shelves spaced to hold plastic bins for drawers. My chuck box for truck camping has no "front" or shelves, just a carry box full of shoe boxes. For travel, I slide all the shoe boxes out onto the picnic table, roll the box onto it's back, and place the shoe boxes back in. This design requires that the carry box end is a square so the shoe boxes fit in with the carry box opening either facing forward or up. Width is dependent on my how many shoe boxes you want to put in. Couldn't be more simple. Of course no stove, dutch ovens, or large pots! All the small items very well organized, though.
Love the idea of using shoe boxes 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I recently built a micro overland ... mostly to make travel with my 2 (does a 6lb 3 leg chihuahua count?) paw buddies simpler 😊
Im not sure i want a built in kitchen ... i think a box like this would give me more flexibility...maybe?lol
Since i live near tons of wineries... im gonna try using old wood wine boxes... ill keep u posted
I am really interested in mushroom hunting also!
Of course puppers count! 😍
Love the idea of using wine crates- very chic 👌🏼
Not many woman have all the equipment as you have ! Boy the things I could make if I had a lovely table saw, skill saw etc.
You did a fine job.
Thanks! Renovating a house led to quite a garage-full 😅
Well, for not being a woodworker, you did one hell of a good job. (I'm envious of all your tools! I build with a hammer, screwdriver & a Japanese handsaw.) Love ur sense of humor too. 👏
We’ll I don’t have a Japanese handsaw, so you’ve got me beat there. I’ve actually had one on my list for a while. 😄
PIVOT!!
My favorite part was 1:30 because that is the same thing that happens to me at HD
Cool video and great job. Makes me sad to call the beautiful 60 Series Landcruiser a 4 runner.
Alas, the 62 footage was archival, from when I used to camp in the "olden days". I sold the ol girl off a while back 🥲 and got a 4Runner.
If I ever get a camping van I will make one of these.
Nicely done!
i love to listen to you. so much fun. thank you for this.
