This mix holds a very special time and place captured in its sound. Everyone in the comments knows what I mean by this. It's almost tears of joy but it's also sorrow as those days are long gone and all we have now are mixes like this to reminisce on those truly better times.

96/97 started going to dance clubs/raves. 99 I found out about Essential Mix. I think it wasn't until about 2001 I found this mix. Honestly not a Oakie fan. However this is without a doubt his best. That Amanda Ghost joint is a TUNE!

It's like a magical sound that can't be described in words. Brings me back to a simpler time in my life when I had the whole world in front of me. Now I'm approaching 40 and all the great days are behind me wrapped in in this mix and sound. Pure magic

@gpitman1 i lived in the UK in 96-97 and have distinct memories of hearing epic sets on BBC Essential Mix and One in the Jungle! My beloved Scottish mate described it as music that shows you pictures!

Like a fine wine, this mix perfectly captures all the optimism and exuberance of that very perfect moment in 1999. The tragic part is that it has been all down hill since then.

These were the days of UNDERGROUND TRANCE that made Paul Oakenfold, The King of Trance.
If you like this set, look for Acid Goa Underground Trance, but Oakenfold has a unique touch that combines all these Trance flavors in a progressive and melodic way.
Oakie told us a story in his sets...
Unfortunately the whole genre has been severely watered down nowadays, 90s and early 00s were the golden era of trance.

I have always thought of these mixes as Stories which wove intricately and seamlessly into my own dramatic story lived in my teens. You keep the Story alive, and I will too!!!

Paul made a lot of great Mixes over the years, but this one is my most favorite by far. Perfect for forgetting everything around you when while closing your eyes.
Two tracks stand out in this mix. The first one is Paradise. I couldn't believe that it's a Vengaboys tune, when I found out and of course Stage One which is the peak of the mix for me. I still get goosebumps listening to this set.
Also the great ID after Amanda Ghost!

Man the beginning gives me the feels big time. I still have this in mp3 on a old memorex cd. I don't even understand what happened to all these years and that is very scary sometimes.

"Hooker Harvey's" at 27:15...a landmark for Toronto Ryerson University students since 1980s.
Unfortunately I was well below legal age(was only a child) then to have experienced the clubbing scene of that era, but I vividly remember hearing a lot of these tracks for the first time in 1999.
same bro!! born in 85, 14 years old 1999 trance got me hooked, learnt all about history of house techno never looked back,..but the ferry armin tiesto pvd oakenfold judge jules tong sasha digweed prime days were special!! on par with the 88 summer of love. 1999 alone had 50 tracks just trance that still 20 years on timeless classics, your lucky to get one great track each year now as everyone is a producer and just get quantity, the quality is gone...ewan mcvicar tell me something good extended mix is the first track i heard in a long time that made me think finally a proper banger and this lads going places!!
