Radio Broadcast.. January 20, 1973...The Killer plays for the first time on the Opry, was given some basic guidelines, broke most of them...and none of us really know the real facts, except that Jerry played about 40 minutes through commercial breaks, and at one point got a bit testy and some think he dropped an "F" bomb, but it was a just a simple, 'motherhumper'. Jerry's mood was odd...he was supposed to stick with Country music, but he went back and forth between country and country rockers until he was pretty well excited and thus the 'm' word. So Jerry ended the show that night with the most moving, the most BEAUTIFUL version of, "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry", and to me, that was Jerry Lee's apology to a bunch of stuffy old folks who never once welcomed him to become a member of the Grand Ole Opry, but he sure did one HELL of a show that night!!
Almost all of his rockin Hits where also top hits in the C&W charts. So it‘s ridiculous that Jerry Lee Lewis is not a member of the Country Hall Of Fame.
He and the Opry folks had trouble right off because he didn't do things their way, so here around 60 years later that follows him to the Country Music Hall of Fame. He has had some big stars sign a petition to get him inducted 4 or 5 years ago...and one of them who says he calls him "Uncle Jerry" got inducted. If that had been me, I would have officially given it back until they induct Jerry Lee Lewis. But I'm glad that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducted Jerry Lee Lewis among the firsts into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986. That, to me is the best!
he is now i believe
@@PaulGaston88 who introduced him that night
@@Ml-dl9qg We know very little about it other than what this radio broadcast says. I remember reading that Roy Acuff introduced him. I also heard a story a month ago and they said ( it was Otis Gibbs on UA-cam) that when he kicked his stool back that night it his Roy Acuff lol lol Crazy story
Jerry Lee appeared on the Grand Ole Opry only one time. Jerry had always wanted to be on the Opry but was turned down. When a good friend talked the Manager into letting Jerry finally perform Jerry agreed to behave and not do anything indecent. Jerry kept his word but after he finished performing he kicked his piano stool across the floor almost hitting Roy Acuff who hadn’t wanted Jerry to perform in the first place. Jerry Lee said “I’m Jerry Lee Lewis and I’m the best there’s ever been! Long live Rock N Roll!” Those might not be the exact words but something to that effect. He was never invited back onto the Opry after that. It’s a shame because the Killer was the greatest whether it be Rock N Roll or Country. He was more County than most that are on the Opry today.
Amen!
The Great Jerry Lee Lewis!
So Great!
Thanks, and welcome!
Thanks Mr Gaston for posting this. There was another version on UA-cam somewhere, but this is better quality I think. As great a showcase for the man's talent as Star Club, maybe even greater.
It's great to have you here! Yes, it's taken straight from the actual live radio show. This is the real deal from WSM- AM 650 where it was broadcast live on the evening of January 20th, 1973...
After ole Jerry's nervous holding you so close to the Killer you see :-)
Great Paul. Was this Grand Opera show Televised? Attended his two shows at Festival Hall, Melbourne 1970. He was at his peak then. Will never forget his performances. Thank you Paul.
The Grand Ole Opry is broadcast in Nashville on WSM 650 AM and over the years parts of earlier shows were filmed. Then later it was televised too, but the only thing that exists back at that time was this radio show. Today, it is televised too, and streamed on UA-cam. Too bad we couldn't see that show back then.
@@PaulGaston88 I was there, actually sat in a chair on stage next to his wife. Dad is Jim Farmer (Marty Robbins Ent, and steel player). He got us in backstage lots. He thought I'd enjoy this. I did!
Thanks so much for making this readily available. There are really no superlatives equal to the task of describing the Killer. Thanks you Jesus for giving him to us. Put no headstone on his grave, he deserves a monument.
Ain't nobody like the Killer!
I can say AMEN to that Bro; Jerry didn't want a monument, just satisfied with an ordinary little headstone. The Spirit of JLL is alive and well.
There's not another one like jll and never will be, l think the man knows ever song on the planet word by word, and never misses a beat.there will never be another like him!!!
Sleepy Labeef had the actual title of "Human Jukebox" lol. There's a video of him doing "Tore up," on here that I love.
Jerry Lee Lewis sings and gets me right down to my heart. Those old honky tonk songs, EVERYTHING touches me... 💜🔥
The folks who ran the Opry back then were a pompous lot, good for Jerry Lee showing them whos THE KILLER
At least, four years late - that shows they're had some issues with the Killer...
Anyway, immortal show and too bad, we don't have it on TV.
Imagine how nuts the old guard and establishment were going that night.
One story I have read and heard was how when Jerry kicked the stool back it hit Roy Acuff and made him mad. Prolly woke him up lol. Thanks for listening!
The very best version of I'm so lonesome, I've ever heard, his voice is rite on game!!!
I have not seen you. Where are you??
I listen to this concert probably 5 times a year. When someone asks "what's a concert you wish you could have attended?" This is in the top three.
Yes, I agree. I attended Austin City Limits 1983.. everyone is jealous 😁🎹🎹💜
I am going to miss this amazing man. He was righteous. Rest In Perfect Peace Killer!!!!!!
R.I.P. because you never did here
Truly a legend
Toward the end of this concert, JLL said he was a rock and roll, country western, rhythm and blues singing m**. He forgot to include gospel, blues, honky tonk, and piano playing.
He also sung MEAN WOMAN BLUES in a short version after Break my mind...
The G.O.O. has probably never had that much applause ever !!
Standing ovation....and at end of his show, they announced their biggest sponsor, Elm Hill meats because he flew through the commercial breaks as this was broadcast live on WSM 650 where they have always had it...but he took up 40 minutes 😆
@@PaulGaston88 I think Hank Williams holds that record!
Every time I hear this from the Opry, I love it more each time. Thanks Paul!!!
JERRY LEE LEWIS IN ALL ITS INFINITE CLASS!
"If you can't 'get it' by this, you can't 'get it' at all!" 😆
UNA ACTUACION HISTORICA... LASTIMA QUE, A DIFERENCIA DE LA ACTUALIDAD, NO EXISTA DOCUMENTO VISUAL ACOMPAÑANDO AL SONORO.
VIVA EL GRAN JERRY LEE LEWIS. ESTE ERA SU MEJOR MOMENTO.
The piano duet with Del Wood is magic. I'm sure that performance received a standing ovation. Not sure why he wasn't supposed to sing r&r -- want it called rockabilly.
thank you kenny lovelace
He definitely done Hank justice on (( I'm so lonesome I could cry )) that was beautiful . Jerry was Jerry ' & I am a big fan of his music.
Thank you so much for being here. I have over 1000 songs to listen to! 🎹🎹🎹❤️
He got kicked out that night on purpose to be with Hank in the kicked out club!!
There has only been one person who could sing and play rock, country, spiritual and blues like Jerry Lee. The only one who even came close was his cousin, Mickey Glley.
There's a video in the late 60s or very early 1970. The killer had both his cousins out on stage. I'm telling you anyone in any of the genres r&r country or the Bible belt. Jimmy Jerry and Micky. That video is priceless.
Welcome!!
@@PaulGaston88 nobody will ever be Jerry Lee. Thankyou for the radio cast of the opry that's a gem I never heard.
Super,j’aime beaucoup !merci Paul !
Excellent

I know I will love it! Going to watch later, going out the door shortly! Thanks Paul.
