Heath came and left us a beauty to savour for the rest of our lives. A talent is a talent. Can't imagine anyone else portraying Ennis. Isn't it amazing when u think of how author Annie Proulx suddenly decided to move to picturesque Wyoming in 1994, followed by going to a local bar and witnessing a man who seemed to have a longing for men and Screenwriter Diana Ossana coming across Annie's short story in the New Yorker in Oct 1997 and then the original Ennis pulling out after 3 months and Heath stepped in... all leading to a classic that has sweetened our lives.
I have watched BM online a couple dozen times but I read that a fan watched it at the cinema 12 times. No wonder box office was 178m on a 14m budget.
A time-enduring classic.
Plus the superb fan videos.
Enough for me...need nothing else.
At the end of film, Ennis said : Jack, I swear. I immediately burst into tears. He should have said the words earlier to Jack.

I just read what "I swear" means:
The novel states that Jack never asks Ennis to swear, the so frequent "I swear" we have said and heard: I swear I will always love you, I swear I will always stay by your side, and so on.
Jack learned that he has to love Ennis with no expectations and, therefore, never asks for eternal promises. And at the last moment, when Ennis realizes that Jack is gone, beyond his ability to undo any of the past, he - after 20 years - was ready to swear his undying love.

I dont think the love was mutual after actually watchin the movie I think in my own personal opninon that jack loved ennis more than he did him. Jack was fine with who he was although they both were living a lie but ennis wanted bith which wasnt fair to jack who just simply wanted his undivided love if you truly love someone
It was mutual but the way they wanted to express their love was what drove them apart. Jack wanted to be with Ennis full time, living together and forget what other people thought or wanted from them, but Ennis was too scared to open himself up to a life like that due to a lot of things. Societal norms and prejudices of the time and culture in which they lived mostly was what shaped his views and fears despite knowing that he loves Jack more than anyone else. Love sometimes doesn't conquer all. ☹

I wish my ex husband had loved me the way these two loved each other. I honestly think that this film wouldn't have been as great if it weren't for Heath Ledger's performance.Gay or straight, man or woman, how could you not cry at the end??I saw this in the theatre and in the audience there were many men who I think 'got it'. A few men, in their 30's, were chuckling and rooting for the men who kill Jake's charactor. I just wish the ground would open up and swallow up this type of behavior.

What is he swearing? That he will always love him for the rest of his life? Or maybe he swears that he will succeed in scattering Jack's ashes?

That is why it had an 'R' rating- because children do not understand it's content. Perhaps it also applies for 30 year olds who think as children who have no maturity and are clueless when maturity is needed to understand such content.

@55cabgirl Read the book - it is so much better! It shows more nuance to thier relationship, too. I believe that the author didn't intend for one to love the other more, rather, she wanted to show how one was able to accept and integrate their feelings better than the other, which, tragically, cut him off some from experiencing the love he had.
