I learned this stroke back in 1978 and it has always been one of my favorites and good reason to whip your paddle shaft grip: grew up watching your dads film while at canoe ccamp in the muskoka.

wonderfully to hear it was done at camps. It is one of my favs too. His films are still going strong today due to the national Film board of Canada promoting them.

yes I was lucky to have a very good instructor "anne Mcknight" and Ray Ketttlewell the paddle maker , the camp campe queen elizabeth on Beausoleil island so all out canoe trips went into muskoka region , so beautiful. I love seeing you carry on your dads legacy. Always been my role model.@@BeckyMason

Holy cow sorry, I just realized who you are. You are Bill Mason's little girl, right? The path of the paddle (book) is the best canoeing guide I have ever read! Bill was a legend. I definitely will get your DVDs now.

If you're a Waterwalker fan you might like River Dreams. It's a canoe adventure documentary coming soon. You can find the trailer for it on youtube.

I bet your canoe is worth more than my car ;-) This looks like a great DVD, I may have to get it. I doubt if my old cheap plastic canoe can perform like yours but it looks like you could teach me a trick or two.

It appears to me that the move at :38 sec is the swan dive maneuver with the over hand shaft which is what Marc Ornstein did in his beautiful performance in 2018 to the song "you raise me up" it was a tearful performance and i noticed some similarities how you guys work the shaft of the paddle i was curious if this is a normal technique or if you had taught him this elegant move.

I don't think I've met Marc Ornstein, yes his paddling performances are awesome. I enjoyed reading your note. I don't remember who taught me the circle but it was one of the strokes I learnt in the early 80's when I was training for a canoe ballet film, lots of canoeist came to share some new strokes with me to learn. The film didn't get completed before Dad (Bill Mason, filmmaker for the National Film Board of Canada) retired but I retained all (well most of) the learned skills past on to me.
Since the filming of my video I have added a 2nd part to the circle. I call it a "Dave Wave" because when I was teaching an awesomely skilled and talented instructor he added an offsidewave of his paddle in the air. I thought that was so cool and charming! As you do it you wave your paddle blade a few times on the otherside of the canoe and continue on doing the low circle. Got to get your elbows in the water to do that. The trick to not capsizing while doing the low circle, I suggest you is looking up as you paddle nears both ends of your canoe as you do the underwater circle. Good luck.
