I assume for the companion skill levels it might be how far you've actually progressed their personal story? I imagine there could also be something similar to da2 where companions may get their own bonusses depending on if they have a positive or negative relationship with you.
I think im going warrior first this time. I usually got mage first but eith the action combsr focus now and the ability to drop kick people off stuff, sounds like fun.

We should be able to level up companions as they gain experience, not based on relationship status 😮. They may gain special abilities based upon relationship level.

Thanks for the update. I absolutely am going to play this game. I am a huge dragon age fan and have been waiting 10 years for the continuation of Solas story and my inquisitor. I heard the devs confirmed our inquisitor will be making appearance in the game and, since I romanced Solas and my inquisitor is tied to his story, I was so happy to hear that they both are in the game. Game looks great to me and I cannot wait to actually play it.
they added notes that a lot of previous spells/abilities are just basic kits now. "Much of what would have been abilities or 'spells' in the past are now accessed in real-time from the core buttons on the controller! Mana Shield, Mage Beam, Bolts, Magical Blasts, Orb Toss, and Elemental Bomb. Not to mention the elemental types change depending on your weapon."
@@alexwang3282Problem is that not every one used those abilities as core part of their mages anyway outside of barrier. What about other spells? What about things such as Sleep, Crushing prison, paralysis, rift/force mage abilities, walking bomb, keeper/earth based spells, etc. They’ve completely gutted mages and reduced them to dps machines even worse than in inquisition. Theres zero excuse for the 3 ability limit. They had the feedback already, Mass effect Andromeda got crapped on for only allowing 3 abilities. It doesn’t exactly invoke optimism that BioWares listened to feedback or learnt from their mistakes when they are doubling down on the same problem that one of their worst games had.
@@Joel-sc2ee barrier is just for yourself iirc. we don't know what spells are avaliable so those spells you mentioned may be not existing at all. and I personally don't play support mage so I'm fine with that. maybe support mage is not as popular as you think so they turn it down.
@@alexwang3282 That’s just it though. If Barrier’s just for yourself it’s only highlighting how useless your party members will be this time around if you don’t even need to worry about them staying alive. It’s kinda sad that mages are gonna play the same as warriors and rogues with parry and dodge as built in mechanics. That’s stupid. Who was asking for that? The point is less whether those specific skills I mentioned are in the game, and more that that’s how diverse Mages were and could be, and that diversity needed more than 3 skills to achieve. 3 skills doesn’t offer anything, it doesn’t offer interesting builds, it doesn’t offer interesting ideas, it just encourages players to choose 3 decent abilities and spam them the entire game. We’ve seen this with Mass effect Andromeda, BioWare used the same bullshit ‘less abilities = more tactical thinking’ there and it was a lie, everyone chose 3 abilities and spammed them for the entire game. Dumbing mages down to just some spammy action attacks + 3 abilities is gonna be ass, I don’t see that being fun at all for anyone compared to what we had in the past. That’s not an evolution of the combat, it’s restricting and taking away options. The combat already sounds shite and already sounds outclassed by other action games. Just because there is an action focus in the gameplay doesn’t mean it needs to be so shallow and restrictive. Look at Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s combat, at this stage it’s completely crapping on every part of Veilguards combat if we compare them. Rebirth allows for companion control, it allows for way more than the 3 abilities, it has plenty of support, dps and crowd control abilities and it does all this while being an action game still with parry and dodge. Veilguards just sounding like a shitty and more inferior version of FF7 Rebirth in damn near every way.
@@Joel-sc2ee some of the companions have heal abilities and they know how to use defensive abilities themselves so less reasons need your support to get them back up. For my warrior i think i´ll go Reaper if its like Reaver from inquisition, if not then i´ll go with Champion. For my mage either Spellblade or Deathcaller (depends wich looks more fun and cool) and for my rogue Veilranger
As someone who always plays on the easiest setting, an elaborate tree like this can be overwhelming, but i like the idea of being able to spec to ur own personal strengths. it doesnt matter much to a player like me, but i hope those who like to go hardcore benefit from/enjoy it. im definitely going to be envoker. "its fire isnt it? its always fire."
As someone who normally plays sword and board, this combat style really does not look like that is going to be a good time. I think the meta is going to be either having no Warriors or having more of a Berserker/Barbarian to somewhat draw attention.
Aight so a game's META is designed by the classes within and the amount of party members you can have. As it is a 3 party system with 3 classes, you'll want 1 of each class, which means you're stuck with either 2 of the same class or 1 of each class, which means you're either in the "Fill Role" meaning you're going to pick the two party members you want to play with and then be the role needed OR you're going to go what you want and struggle bus through. COMBOS prove this point even more as each class will combo off another classes abilities more readily and easily. In a fast paced combat system with limited abilities, a shit tier potion system and healing system, you're correct the warrior is the dead pick almost every single time, barring they can somehow uber heal themselves or have insane damage to cope. And since this is just DA 2 and Adromeda.....the warrior class is the bad pick.
Like all new RPG's I'll wait for you to play it on stream. Certain things will get my attention. 1. Summoning actual varied minions/mercenaries with beneficial skills of their own. 2. The ability to take powers of enemies. (Kirby or Rogue from Xmen) 3. The most important A Strong Story for me to root for the Heroic fantasy. 4. If Morrigan returns it would hit me in the Feels too. As a young man when i played DA:O she had that special something...
I'm going to wait for release before deciding if I'll love or hate it. Too often things I thought I'd love in a game turned out not to be what I thought, and things I thought I'd hate likewise. Whether that's classes, mechanics, or whatever. I still like learning what I can, considering possibilities, and especially delving into lore - without getting too bogged down. So thank you Wolf, for what seems to me a very practical stance - hopeful, but not going too far out on a limb either way for a game none of us have played yet. I'm wondering if the companions will have more abilities than some expect. Like, very few points we can distribute where we want but more available to them/our team that are preset or part of a set template. So although we can't respec or change their class à la BG3 they may still be powerful/useful, just not very customisable. Similarly, might our abilities actually be more functional than it seems? What I mean is, one ability maybe able to be used to do different things, depending on how we build the character, and how they interact with our companions' builds. I'm probably not explaining myself well, and I suspect it's probably not the case if they're trying to 'streamline' which probably means 'simplify and dumb down' rather than 'make smooth and flawless'. EA inspires 0 confidence and trust, but Bioware was awesome. I've not lost all hope yet, although my trust has eroded quite a bit. So I'm hopeful, but not holding my breath.
In inquisition I loved playing DW rogue with +guard on hit enchants on my armor. As long as I was smacking stuff, my guard grew faster than enemies could chip it away. Rogue tank. So much fun. Dunno if this game will have that option. I might go for spellbinders, because I loved those types in DA1 and DA3. But I would have to bee a "pew pew" mage until I can specialise... hmm...
Some of that sounds like GW2. Looks like they put a lot of thought in combat, which tells me less was placed on what made Bioware a loved studio in the first place. Inquisition showed the direction they were taking the franchise. Thanks for following this.
they put no thought into combat....what...what do you mean? This isn't Dragon AGe inquistions fault, this game is entirely Dragon Age 2 and Adromeda's fault. This is the bastard child of 2 of the worst games in Biowares lfe. This direction was entirely predictable based off Anthem and DA 2 and Adromeda. The combat is just hack and slash , arkham action with a thing veneer of "press this button when it GLOWS for COMBO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" It's just bad design end of story.

This is interesting. The comparison to AC Valhalla skill tree is valid but I feel the one in this game gonna unlock some genuinely exciting additions to the combat sandbox as opposed to Valhalla's new abilities that are more making the gameplay routine and sneak & stab less annoying. Also really curious if there's gonna be enemy juggling. Since the dev have basically confirmed a system similar to Platinum games' dodge offset, with enemy juggling this game might just have some combo mad potentials.

I think DAO is the best game in the series to this date but man, some coments here has real sad divorced dad energy. Peace
waite waite waite you got me exited when I saw you duel weilding swords I thought duel wielding warrier was back =/. I hope the spell blade is more akin to the Arcane mage is Origans.
The system seems a little weird to me. If you're going for the ability side, but plan on going Champion for the warrior, you'll have to waste points moving all the way around the tree just to reach it? Doesn't seem like you'll be able to build exactly as you want.
wait what? Companions don't have full skill trees? What a shame... oops I forgot... we can't alternate between the 3 companions in the game. Is Corinne Busche also saying that was to complicated ?
Pretty dissappinted that theres nothing from the Templar in the warrior tree.....you know....the spec thats been around since Origins? Im hoping that they maybe sprinkled it in the abilties section but im not confident :/
If I purchase Dragon Effect Thedas (my name for Veilguard, as it's Mass Effect Andromeda in a new skin! At least the gameplay-loop is! They only dropped the cover-mechanic, which doesn't make sense without guns anyway, and gave you blocking and parrying and magical shields instead!), I'll still play a (severely gimped - 3 abilities only will gimp any class, but mages the most, especially since mage class-fantasy is: Powerful spellcaster with a spell for every possibility! So buffing, debuffing, healing, dealing damage, crowd control etc....not "Well, if want to heal effectively, you'll deal no damage and you will also not be good at crowd control or anything else but healing for that matter!") mage :(
As will be to no one's surprise, my first character will be a female elven mage. Her name will be Ashryn, with ash blond hair, and she will kill Solas... as she has sworn to do in trespasser.
They literally say companions growth in combat is based on the relationship level to Rook. If you want more abilities for them, you have to raise your relationship with them
So either the relationship gain is going to be very shallow and you can level it with even having 2 companions in the party OR you won't be able to switch your companions because most of them will suck in fights
@WolfheartFPS sounds pretty self-explanatory to me. Get to know them. Talk to them. Get their approval and do stuff for them like quests. Like in every other rpg. Or just the more you use them in battle like a jrpg system where you "goodjob" when they do something. Either way raise relationship is going to involve some way of using them/or getting to know them. We've seen this in many games already, games like greedfall have this system where the main character gets bonuses/passives when relationship is gained.
@WolfheartFPS "Every time you rank up a companion's Relationship Level, you unlock a skill point to spend specifically on that companion - this is how you unlock new combat abilities. " - says so in the game informer deep dive (abilities and skill tree section)
Hold up WHAT?! I thought I heard him wrong, why is the warrior subclass called reaper? The dark spirit warrior was always called Reaver before, why change it? Also there is no Templar? This game is going to suck eggs calling it now.
Why the fuck does current BioWare hate complex party dynamic? Reduced the max party size and now each companion only has roughly 5 skills total? This shit is slowly becoming a joke.
Companion skill trees are severely limited likely because, based on the game footage they released, the companions are just set dressing and pretty much useless with the possible exception of special abilities that can be used on a timer. Instead of Cassandra wiping the battlefield clean on her own, now enemies only focus on Rook while the companions do negligible damage.
Staff + magical daggers = happy place. Spellblade here I come. Look I know we're all sceptical, but I'm just really looking forward to this. I'm not even going to go in expecting anything but just... "It'll be fun". I'm tired of being angry about games, studios, and their shortcomings. I'm hoping Bioware pulls us all back in, with this.
Eh I was never skeptical. This sort of reaction happens everytime certain characters are in the forefront. Same thing happened with Assassin Creed. Just gotta wait it out and use your own judgement.
I'm more tired with studios making a mockery of a franchise or chasing profit and dumping quality. So no, this hate for a game is new to me, I'll see whether it will be valid or not. As for myself, I hate the action packed and needlessly flashy games and when you add not being able to control your companions I'm definitely not convinced. But I certainly won't preorder or buy right after release, maybe never.
@@Lyle-qc8ld The wild thing isn't that people dislike a game for not meeting their expectations; rather, it's that people seem to feel compelled to defend it by misrepresenting the criticism.
Despite appreciating the faster-paced combat direction, the showcase was lacking with few abilities. Combat mechanics seem to rely too much on button-mashing, felt floaty, and lacked visceral impact. Archery was clunky and ineffective. Attack warning lines disrupted immersion, suggesting the game might overly coddle players-why not use a subtler 'spider-sense' approach instead? The boss enemy felt like a bullet sponge, and the warning circles cheapened the experience with excessive hand-holding. AI, enemies, and companions often seemed designed to let the player shine. I could go on with criticism of many other aspects as well, for instance the garish lights everywhere, but I don't hate the game. Hope I'll see more to convince me this isn't yet another lackluster BioWare product.
Hmmm! Mage Spellblade or Death Caller sounds like fun... Or maybe a Warrior class when we learn more about them. Thank you! And looking forward to hearing more! Skål!
It's growing on me too, but still annoying turning Dragon Age into Mass Effect. I don't like action rpg's all that much, at least there's a game pause.
In a Dragon Age Inquisition party banter, Vivienne tries to subtly call out Solas as a hypocrite for his opinion on blight magic vs. blood magic, but he explains blood magic "when properly used" isn't as bad as she thinks. In the game I believe he also on a separate occasion mentions the difficulty of accessing the fade when using blood magic? If true, "story reasons" explained as The Veilguard. Also as the Inquisitor using "blood magic" was going to be a "No" story wise. Unless your main character has no religious authority position and no story demanding fade accessibility, I do not see being a blood mage as a possibility.
Maybe the relationship thing with the companions works like it did in dragon age 2 where you get different perks or something depending on if they are your friend or rival
No, it's an approval system. However, they are linking their approval to their combat performance because they want to make sure that you, the player, doesn't contradict any of the political ideas these characters will push in the narrative.
@@willdall4 That's a bit of a straw man statement, I never said that. But look at the previous games, and especialiy DAO. All in all im excited for veilguard as a ling time dragon age fan and I think people are letting a bad cinematic trailer and their experience with inquisition get in the way of what might potentially be the most straight forward fun entry in the series.
A lot of the replies are from older players who just remember DAO through heavily rose-tinted lenses and have been mad about the series not being a "tactical RPG" since DA2 was released. I don't think any of them actually thought DA would suddenly return to being a tactical RTwP RPG again - they're just stubbornly repeating an opinion they've been repeating for well over a decade now, since that's something you start to do once you get older. I'm also pretty old - 38 - and have to stop myself from being like that sometimes.
@BenkaiDebussy that's totally fair, I'm only 24 but I grew up playing dragon age as it the games came out so maybe I was more open to the shift in play style throughout the franchise
@@RoafBeest I actually prefer the shift in play-style, just because I personally like action-RPGs and feel like there aren't enough high quality modern examples of them (while you can just play BG3, the Owlcat games, Pillars of Eternity, etc if you want a tactical RPG). So I personally love the idea of Dragon Age becoming a sort of "fantasy Mass Effect" and think it probably suits Bioware more (since they haven't really made a high quality tactical RPG in decades - even DAO wasn't actually an amazing or well-balanced tactical game).
Speaking personally as someone who grew up playing the majority of Bioware's catalog they aren't the same company anymore and watching in real time as EA destroyed them sucked hard. It was pretty immediate too what a cancer they were on Bioware what with the insidious DLC design that started in DAO and DA2 being a rushed out the door mess. Expectations are incredibly low even if what they're saying in the articles sounds good to me for the most part.
Not really that impressed with this and the companions being limited even more sounds about right with what I expected from how deep the game was looking to be.
I want to like this game so much, but everything I see feels like it's just a failure of the series being "made for a modern audience" feels more like they're making the game for people that have never been fans of the game, meanwhile the fans are going to get a subpar dumbed down product. And I can see it now, when the game isn't received as well as they want it to be, they'll start rolling out the articles "toxic fans are the problem" trying to gaslight us into thinking we're wrong for not liking it.
Thanks for the video as always. You asked my favorite question..."So what are you going to play?" And everyone says "I am going to play that". Then we get to Character Creation and its like.... The templars that we're used to from Origins to Inquisition don't exist in Tevinter. They technically do have "templars" but they're just soldiers, there aren't any templars that can block magic in Tevinter.
The fact that there is no blood magic is absolutely ridiculous considering the setting. But I suspected years ago that BioWare wouldn’t have the balls to put that sort of thing in a DA game again since they’ve done nothing but ‘Sanitise’ the series since DA2. That was the last true DA game we got.

The idea is to amass passives that augment your playstyle as well as morph or add to your powers. For example, you might add a root to your Firewall, or maybe turn it into an Icewall (to morph it from a damage spell to an area denial).

Remember when Dragon Age had four schools of magic? Pepperidge farm remembers!
6 if you include awakening DLC
I thought there were more than that. If you include Blood magic tree (there were only 4 though).
5 Basics (Mage talents, Primal, Entropy, Spirit, Creation), 4 specs in the base game (Shapeshifter,Blood Mage, Spirit healer, Arcane warrior) + 1 expended Mage talents, and 2 additionnal specs, yeah .... Those were the days
Dwarf rogue in DA:O, human warrior in DA2, elven mage in DA:I, so gotta go with a qunari here, though not sure on the class. The coolest background will probably decide which way I go
Me too ! has to be a qunari I finally like the design
Love very specific classes, love very deep progression. FEED ME SKILL TREES! Great coverage.

I loved playing a reaver so I'm hoping one of them is just a renamed version. I always loved chomping down on a dragon when my health got too low to boost me back up, nothing like a lil sip of blood to top you up. Then going nuts with claws. Listen, reaver was so fun, which as a mage main is saying a lot. (ironically I hated bloodmage so I'm not sad to see that as not an option)
hmmm I think I am leaning towards Veil Ranger, Death caller, or Slayer / Reaper. How about you?
Death Caller or Spellblade for Qunari Mage Rook.
Reaper with the Mourn Watch background sounds cool.
Either Veil Ranger or Spellblade. I’m still undecided. Will decide closer to release day 😂
Champion. Or spellblade. Melee mage sounds fun.
Veil Ranger, Slayer/Reaper or Spellblade for me personally
I assume for the companion skill levels it might be how far you've actually progressed their personal story? I imagine there could also be something similar to da2 where companions may get their own bonusses depending on if they have a positive or negative relationship with you.
I think im going warrior first this time. I usually got mage first but eith the action combsr focus now and the ability to drop kick people off stuff, sounds like fun.
remember when you could build every companion up like they were their own characters and could play any of them?
if we wanted to play Dark Alliance, that game would’ve sold better. people don’t want this. hogwarts legacy wasn’t bought for its compelling gameplay. it sold cause of drama.
get your “streamlined” action out of our rpgs 🙃
I hope there will be a mod which extends the number of active skills from the screenshot at 7:10 I can imagine adding 4 extra slots without an issue, I don't understand why they limit active skills to 3 only it is such a bummer for RPG game, but because it is ARPG, just press more buttons don't overthink everything :)
We should be able to level up companions as they gain experience, not based on relationship status 😮. They may gain special abilities based upon relationship level.
Similarly to DA2 neutral/friendship/rival abilities maybe
@@accade_acaso. No, it's not like that.
There is no "rivalry". If you have low approval you will miss on abilities. They want to force you to "like" the characters no matter what.
Thanks for watching
I'm going to pick mage. The magical daggers sound intriguing since my mage will also be an Antivan Crow.
I really hope theres more than 3 equipable abilities at one time because that really, really sucks. Especially for mage
they added notes that a lot of previous spells/abilities are just basic kits now.
@@alexwang3282
That’s just it though.
Super excited for the combat. I love that Neve carries a sword. The mage daggers sound so cool too. I think I'm leaning towards rogue though.
Magical daggers seem to be the alt weapon as every class has one.
I think it was confirmed that the Reaper is a life-steal spec. for those wondering. Slayer should be focused on two-handed weapons.
So it's the new Reaver. Well, now I know what build I'm playing.

Morrigan was magic, her voice and her ramarks. Loved her and I am not gay😅
For me that "special something" was her being voiced by Claudia Black.
@@raziel4772 yes I am watching Farscape again because of her
I'm going to wait for release before deciding if I'll love or hate it.
Man, that skill tree is daunting ! I miss how DAO presented the skill/spell options.
But I would have to bee a "pew pew" mage until I can specialise... hmm...
I realy hope the magic is good in this one, and that we can summon our own bony boies :D:D
Spellblade sounds mighty interesting. But if it's not as cool as I think it is, I might give Deathcaller a try.

Also really curious if there's gonna be enemy juggling. Since the dev have basically confirmed a system similar to Platinum games' dodge offset, with enemy juggling this game might just have some combo mad potentials.

DAO is NOT gone, thanks. It's sitting next to me in physical form, and in my Steam account.
That many "nodes" has me worried about the old "+ 6.86% more damage" issue that a lot of modern "RPGs" institute in their level ups.
I must have missed it, I thought they had a healer mage as they were leaving shield barrier mechanics from Inquisition out of the Veilguard.
The healing spells / passive etc are somewhere in the hexagon!
Knight Enchanter styled mage for me probably.
It seems like they were inspired by Path of Exile with skill tree.
They mentioned specifically Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy XII as the direct inspiration.
waite waite waite you got me exited when I saw you duel weilding swords I thought duel wielding warrier was back =/. I hope the spell blade is more akin to the Arcane mage is Origans.
The system seems a little weird to me. If you're going for the ability side, but plan on going Champion for the warrior, you'll have to waste points moving all the way around the tree just to reach it? Doesn't seem like you'll be able to build exactly as you want.
can you just go hack n slash or do you have to use the combo bar
wait what? Companions don't have full skill trees? What a shame... oops I forgot... we can't alternate between the 3 companions in the game.
Is Corinne Busche also saying that was to complicated ?

Took me a few weeks but I've come to terms with Dragon Effect: the MassGuard.
Spellblade Dalish Female Mage 100%
There are a lot of Gotham Knights' elements in this gameplay.

You didn't tell us anything. We want to know what "raise your relationship" means.
@@tokamnich4709 "bonuses/passives when relationship is gained."

Reaver is a different thing

Skip to min 6:15 for actuall class information
I think reaper will be the mortalitasi Templar
I'm thinking it's more like a Templar that isn't a chantry thing like demon-slayers and shit
Why the fuck does current BioWare hate complex party dynamic? Reduced the max party size and now each companion only has roughly 5 skills total? This shit is slowly becoming a joke.
When’s the release date coming 😢
Companion skill trees are severely limited likely because, based on the game footage they released, the companions are just set dressing and pretty much useless with the possible exception of special abilities that can be used on a timer. Instead of Cassandra wiping the battlefield clean on her own, now enemies only focus on Rook while the companions do negligible damage.
Kind of weird no blood mage or spirit warrior sub class.

the hate for this game is wild. Im not expecting much either but it could be a fun time and if it isnt? o well
Eh I was never skeptical.

I think they've said it's an approval system not friendship and rivalry which is a shame. Some fine tuning and it would've been a game changer imo.

@@BenkaiDebussy I couldn't agree more
Speaking personally as someone who grew up playing the majority of Bioware's catalog they aren't the same company anymore and watching in real time as EA destroyed them sucked hard.
I want to like this game so much, but everything I see feels like it's just a failure of the series being "made for a modern audience"
feels more like they're making the game for people that have never been fans of the game, meanwhile the fans are going to get a subpar dumbed down product. And I can see it now, when the game isn't received as well as they want it to be, they'll start rolling out the articles "toxic fans are the problem" trying to gaslight us into thinking we're wrong for not liking it.

I don't think Templar's are as much of a thing in Northern Thedas. Tevinter is mage run.

It's a dragon age game, beyond origins playing with controller is just better, unfortunately.
I’m a mage player, so I’m definitely looking forward to trying out the 3 different mage specializations. And maybe if I find being a Rogue or Warrior interesting enough, I’ll try them out too.
10/10. Algorithm comment, good vid Wolf. Still skeptical on DA:TV...we'll have to see at launch.
Thanks!
As I understand it, 80% of these “boosts” are passives like “By performing a light attack from behind on an enemy born when the moon was in the constellation Sagittarius, you get +10% crit power for 5 seconds”?
P.S. It's very interesting to use one of the 3 (3 Karl!!!!) buttons once a minute...
those look like pretty big skill trees when we only get 3 damn skills at once, at least based off what we've seen so far
The idea is to amass passives that augment your playstyle as well as morph or add to your powers. For example, you might add a root to your Firewall, or maybe turn it into an Icewall (to morph it from a damage spell to an area denial).
It's just a bigger DA2 tree.
I prefer the small groups 2 had, though.
Great video, wolf! Thanks for keeping us informed!
