Knowing the little I do about wave propagation, I do not understand why they are going with 2.4. Basic physics (maybe not so basic) make it impossible for it to penetrate better or travel farther. Not to mention interference. Admittedly I'm ignorant of the difference in the new long range 2.4s vs old school 2.4. If I hadn't used dji 2.4 I'd say it was all hype and lies but ive used 2.4 that out does my long range. I don't understand it though if what Ive read and been tought about these very topics was true.
@D I like to see sweeping statements :) Yes, in Europe it is an issue with limited bandwidth/power in legal mode. What 2.4G system and info are you on about?
Immersion and Flysky have come out with 2.4 long range. Check out Pawel’s review. In a few months, prices will come down on all of them. Competition is good.
At 3:04 you mention that FrSky radios have a slow inverter, which do not allow the crossfire tx to run at full speed. Does this apply to the x9d too (and would I need to do the hardware mod for this radio too), or does that run the crossfire micro tx v1 at full speed?
Just for information: team-blacksheep.freshdesk.com/support/solutions/articles/4000133896-do-i-need-taranis-mod-inverter-for-my-frsky-radio- this was another of the sources of the original confusion for me (thank you for alleviating my concerns)
Thank you so much for this video. It has helped greatly to verify some points that was confusing to me in the manual. Looking forward to possible Arducopter/Matek F405 Std/Crossfire/Mavlink/Mission Planner configuration tips. Thank you again for all you do!!!
Hey Lee. I have a quick question I hope you can answer: On the Crossfire Diversity Nano (and maybe full size as well), how do you keep the GPS powered while it's in beacon (find) mode? I can't figure it out. When I disconnect the main lipo, the RX stays alive but the GPS goes dark. I don't get it. Is there a hidden 3.3v or 5v output on the RX or something? I could connect it directly to the 1s backup lipo but that would mean death for the battery pretty quickly unless I remember to disconnect it every time I land. Hope you have the answer.
Hello Lee. I hope you are doing well in the lockdown. The US doesn't seem to be too far behind the UK. I am planning to switch over to crossfire from Frsky. But today I went to purchase Crossfire at TBS site and the price has dropped $50USD. Do you know if there is a new version about to be released? If so, i will wait for the new version. Thank you and keep up the great videos they have helped me tremendously. Roger
I’ve just purchased a brand new teranis qx7s . Will I need to make the internal modification or has this now been sorted. Thanks in anticipation. Great channel bud.
Nice overview! Been flying CRSF on multirotors for a while. Now interested in exploring some fixed wing flying. I have been setting up a simple foam plane with the TBS 6ch PWM adapter. On the back of the PCB there are pads marked VRx, Vsens. I am hoping this might send Rx battery voltage back by telemetry, but cant find any documentation on this feature. Do you have any details you can share about this?
On my 5", I have the T mounted horizontal, at the rear on a 3D mount so the tips are not touching the rear arms. On 100mW (am I right this is max for UK?), I can get about 400-500m flying away from me (ideal alignment) before it drops into the 50Hz range (100-199 LQ). It often won't get back to 150Hz till it's very close in; presumably due a worse alignment. I had sort of assumed that, even on a freestyle quad, i'd never drop out of the 150Hz band on 100mw, FPV flying at my flying club. Unrealistic expectation?
I wish you would have done the entire vid with the T16,,, I just got crossfire v2 starter kit,,, and have been following you and your T16, I got a little lost but I hear you say that I need to set crsf rx and tx... but wondering how my new bnf nazgul hd with crossfire will come set up?
How does this interface with the Flysky Paladin? I see it has CRSF in the RF setup. Is it just a case of selecting this protocol and will you then get further menu options to configure the TBS unit? Great video as always thanks.
Thnx for the tutorial, was very useful & appreciated. Your quad looks really great! You're in Europe, me too, should come around, I'm sure I could learn a lot from you! Take care & fun flyin'
Hi thanks great info.. But what is the difference between a Nano SE and the Immortal T v2.. It seems the Nano SE comes with a smaller Immortal T and the V2 is more powerful antenna which you can buy separately .. Or is the SE version the same??
Hello, I would like to buy a "Tbs crossfire MICRO tx v2" and mount an "Diamond Antenna", but I see that the new crossfire versions already have a T-antenna installed. Is it possible to remove it to mount the diamond antenna or you have to keep the one already combined with the module? thanks a lot for all the videos, they are always very useful.
Thank you very much for this very useful information, I have been looking for a long time how to connect my Pixhawk Lite with the nanno receiver via SBUS, now I can calibrate RC with the MP
Thank you for explanations. I had a problems with setup. The problem was in In the purity of the signal between EU and US. Thank you ! Like + describe !!! :))
Lee, I get that Crossfire is a great complement to Inav, but what about Ardupilot? I appreciate it'll work sbus and all that, but what about telemetry? please include a video that discusses this in the series, Thx Andy
Thanks for all you do! Do you have a post detailing in more depth how to get CRSF working on INAV with a Matek FC? I'm confused about assigning the spare UART and the settings in INAV specifically.
Last one. I've watched a few posts about VTX control over Smartaudio. Using TBS Unify Pro 32 and F405 with the new Adjustments menu option I've set up VTX power levels. On my OSD the power level number only blinks but doesn't change. Is this a firmware issue?
I know that a lot of people seem to like the Radiomaster TX16s, but if you had to recommend another radio to look at for entry level, what would it be? Thanks.
I'm into the third video already and also looked online to try to understand, is this intended to replace my regular receivers or work in conjunction with them?
@@Painless360 Thanks. I'm looking to extend the range of my sik radios to be more in line with my Rx8R pro/ x8r receivers. This would allow me to ditch the sik radios as well then, right? Is this why people are using TBS Crossfire? Can you suggest anything like a longer range sik radio? Is that what Crossfire is for? Is so, can I install redundant receivers with Crossfire like I use with RX8R Pro and X8R? For example, If I need two receivers for the aircraft, and another one on my gimbal, can I do that like I can with X8R? Connect to all three at the same time? I realize I can use TBS Crossfire from the external RX while also using the X8R from the internal module of the Taranis, but I want to use only one protocol, is that possible?
That is a huge number of questions. Here are the short answers: 1) It could, depends on what you use them for 2) For long range, Crossfire is hard to beat 3) Yes and flying in places where 2.4Ghz doesn't work well 4) I don't think you can. Maybe as you can bind multiples.. 5) If you want only one protocol then not with Crossfire and FrSky
Please can you tell me a setup for Skywalker Titan. I like to fly long range 40km and i have a taranis fry sky x9d from 2015. Would you prefer the h743 or pixhawk cube`?
Query from India Please make this same discriptive video for R9m module and r9mx receiver. Also suggest a budget flight control for the receiver connection.
I want a crossfire tx module and a walksnail fpv rx module on a tripod with as long of cables as practical so i can put the tripod up higher and get all around better range . Or watch fpv on a video projector screen or sit in shade on a hit day . Spotters can run around in the sun . Does a shielded cable between the tx and the crossfire module have a limit to a few meters ? I want the module up higher on the tripid and me still on the ground . Finding a place to fly with good line of sight for good radio control link is important to me .
@@xeriamaned X9D+ SE "2019" and previous X9D models do not need the mod/inverter... 😁 I just received both of my CRSF transmitters, the Full size and the Micro TX V2, and they work perfectly in my X9D+ SE "2019" and my Jumper T18.🔥 All is well. 😎 Have fun and enjoy! ✌🏼
I would recommend something like a Bixler first if you want to get into fixed wing. Check out my Kit Picks 2020 video for my wing choices.. Happy flying
Great video! Got yourself a new subscriber. Is the FrSky inverter mod necessary on all FrSky radios? I thought that was only necessary on like, QX7 and the older Horus radios. I currently have the x9d+2019 I have Crossfire module and Rx in the mail
With the sbus and crsf part you helped me a lot. Thanks man!🙏 If i wired up my crossfire nano as sbus, then do i need set in the taranis external module(crsf micro tx v2) sbus or crsf?
Hlo Sir I am from Nepal and my friend lives in the USA.He is coming to Nepal in his vacation the problem is is it legal to carry the TBS Crossfire Micro TX V2 with him in his bag will airport authority allow him plz suggest something
I got a nano and soldered on the pwm 6 channel adaptor,, it's bound and updated,, but won't arm my plane or move any servos..watching all your vids again to try to figure out what I'm missing....hmm? For output chapel I tried setting to ch1 to ch1 which is pwm ch1 I thought, but still can't seem to get them to talk... On my tx16s I don't see PWM as an option? Is ch 1 actually pwm ch1???
Thanks for the informative video. I'm very interested in the horizontal antenna mounts on the bottom of your quad. Are they 3D printed or readymade? Could you let me know where or how I can get them? Thanks.
Dumb question but when you install Crossfire can you still fly your models that aren't running crossfire receivers. For example I have quads with Frsky receivers but want to run Crossfire on a long range quad build. Is it just a matter of setting up the model in the transmitter to use the Crossfire module instead of the built in signal?
Great video, I've been trying to add GPS display on my TX16S , with TBS Nano receiver. my telemetry is not showing GPS coordinates and main on board battery readings. What do I do to get the data to display? I have the Matek F-405 Wing FC on my AR wing.
@@Painless360 I am running INaV. I’ve decided to get my feet wet trying Crossfire. My previous hardware was frsky R9M with a R9 MM mini receiver connecting the RSSI input to the flight controller output to receive data on my radio. I see that the TBS nano receiver has 4 additional connections and 2 of them that has me curious about are BSL SCL and BSL SDA I was wondering if this could be used for input for data? One great thing about having the GPS coordinates display on the transmitter display is that I could take a picture of the Coordinates off my transmitter screen and paste them in a software on my phone and get GPS location on the spot.
Hello. I had experienced some issues with TBS Micro V2 module in my Jumper T16. After couple of days investigating and talking with vendor, TBS, and even local RC shop I have found out that Crossfire was NOT working due to locked module. This should not happen but good to know for other multi-module owners. Module locking is there to comply with local law e.g. in Europe we can only do 25mW power legally. . . Anyway. . .just letting you know just in case somebody had/have the same issue and would like to throw their multimodule or TBS Micro so far away. :-) They do not have to do that now! 😃Problem solved by unlocking the module by clicking bind button 10x.
I have covered this in my Crossfire videos. team-blacksheep.freshdesk.com/support/solutions/articles/4000099976-region-crossfire-locked-no-frequency-selection-and-limited-power-selection-under-general-menu covers it too. Glad you sorted it out.
@@Painless360 Mine wasn't even binding at all when locked. It was just sitting there doing nothing (yellowish glowing light all the time). Sorted out when unlocked. That is what I wanted to say. If you have video on this issue I shut up then. 😀
I can't seem to figure out an answer to this, but if I have a Crossfire Micro and a Flight Controller with pins installed, how would I wire that up? The Crossfire Micro comes with smaller cables that don't have the typical Servo Leads at the end. Would I just have to remove the pins from the FC and solder directly, or is there a cable I could find? I tend to swap Rx's on my FC from time to time which is why I have pins soldered on.
I have problem with crossfire, many failsafe less than 1km with 1 watt power, and RSSI strength drop instantly (not gradual). Maybe I placed the antennas horizontally or it hardware defect? Will try moving it vertical tomorrow. Thanks Lee for your help. Another idea for video: How to Install Crossfire on inav (Wiring,Telemetry, Failsafe), the Correct Way + Tips. xD
@@Painless360 I am new to the TBS ecosystem and 900MHz in general. I used my old radios until I lost a model due to losing radio link on 2.4GHz. My financial advisor (wife) said its time to upgrade my old radio. That was a lot to really just say I don't know which crossfire module to choose and why one is better than another besides output power. Same with their rx and the different options there. I can do research and reading but I respect your opinion and know that you will give honest information.
Check out the kit picks video from last summer. Nothing major has changed from then. RadioMaster TX16s, Crossfire or Tracer for the module. Modern radios are much better at solid 2.4 than older protocols we call used so you may not need a separate module..
Hi Painless! I'm a little confused about which module to get. Currently, I'm running DragonLink on the FrSky Taranis X9D Plus. I fly quads and fixed wing and use a head tracker, so I'm assuming I need the full blown version? I'm also concerned about how I'm affected with the inverter situation. Are you able to clear things up for me? Thanks!
The original Taranis you have or one of the new ACCESS capable radios should all be able to run Crossfire and Tracer at full speed.. See my recent video chats with Trappy..

Thanks for doing it=) I would have a question tho i would like to try and maybe use it on a plane aswell and i am currently looking at what antenna would be the best for long range and a strong signal but since a plane is a bit different i would like to maybe if its possible back the reciever up with a traditional 2.4 ghz diversity receiver so that if one fails there wont be much damage. and since the Radiomaster for example have both 2.4 internal and 900mhz external capabilities i wondered if you would be able to set it up in such a way =) Thank you so much and I hope you can get that to work ! =)

Dragon link? Im most likely just ignorant but ive been flying and building quads for 3 years and I've never even heard of it. Either terrible marketing, extremely expensive, or just not as good. Which is it, or please explain my ignorance gently😉
@@HDgodfrey Same thing happened to me with Crossfire. I was so happy with my Dragon Link that I guess I blocked everything else out. Hey Lee. I have a quick question I hope you can answer:
On the Crossfire Diversity Nano (and maybe full size as well), how do you keep the GPS powered while it's in beacon (find) mode?
Roger

Probably. Frsky only bothered to fit the faster inverter when they went to ACCESS... Happy flying

Great video. I followed you step by step. In crossfire configuration, I get Tracer Micro TX not XF micro TX..Why?
I'd check for an update. Sounds like a bug
I wish you would have done the entire vid with the T16,,, I just got crossfire v2 starter kit,,, and have been following you and your T16, I got a little lost but I hear you say that I need to set crsf rx and tx... but wondering how my new bnf nazgul hd with crossfire will come set up?
The LUA script is the same. Happy flying!
I've not had one in with a different antenna but I've not ordered one recently.. Best of luck!

Last one. I've watched a few posts about VTX control over Smartaudio. Using TBS Unify Pro 32 and F405 with the new Adjustments menu option I've set up VTX power levels. On my OSD the power level number only blinks but doesn't change. Is this a firmware issue?
Very good as usual.

I know that a lot of people seem to like the Radiomaster TX16s, but if you had to recommend another radio to look at for entry level, what would it be? Thanks.
See my Kit Picks 2020 video. There are very few changes from the ones in there. The TX16s is popular for lots of very good reasons. Best of luck!
I'm into the third video already and also looked online to try to understand, is this intended to replace my regular receivers or work in conjunction with them?
Replace
Here are the short answers:
1) It could, depends on what you use them for
2) For long range, Crossfire is hard to beat
3) Yes and flying in places where 2.4Ghz doesn't work well
4) I don't think you can.

Depends on a few things. ua-cam.com/video/te4D_fjBVfM/v-deo.html covers my thoughts..
i prefer ezuhf to this. much simpler to set up and a solid signal at 433mhz. but the receiver is bigger and heavier compared to the tiny one for this.

I've not tried it, best of luck with it. Sorry I can't be more help.

You'll need to keep a watchful eye on the main TBS resellers as they sell out fast.. best of luck
Thanks for the informative video. I'm very interested in the horizontal antenna mounts on the bottom of your quad. Are they 3D printed or readymade? Could you let me know where or how I can get them? Thanks.
They are just bits of foam and cable ties. Happy flying
@@Painless360wow I couldn't imagine they've been made in that simple way. They look so cool and nice and neat.
Often the simple way is the most elegant. Happy flying!
Yes the Crossfire module doesn't stop anything else on the radio working. You select what you want on a model by model basis. Happy flying
Painless360 Thank you for the quick response. Looking forward to watching more of your videos.
Great video, I've been trying to add GPS display on my TX16S , with TBS Nano receiver. my telemetry is not showing GPS coordinates and main on board battery readings. What do I do to get the data to display? I have the Matek F-405 Wing FC on my AR wing.
It depends on what you are running on the flight controller. I have videos for both INAV and Ardupilot setups..
I use the INAV lua script here. May be what you want... Best of luck
@@Painless360 Thanks so much, always enjoy your video contains.
Wow, amazing, such great info, thank you very much!
I would crimp pins onto the wires usually. See my video on crimping.. best of luck
@@Painless360 Okay, yeah that makes sense. Thanks!
Silly question but I’m getting back into this after two years off. Do you actually load an sd card with Lua scripts and load it into the transmitter?
That is the way I am using it here.. Best of luck!
I have problem with crossfire, many failsafe less than 1km with 1 watt power, and RSSI strength drop instantly (not gradual). Maybe I placed the antennas horizontally or it hardware defect? Check out the kit picks video from last summer. Nothing major has changed from then. RadioMaster TX16s, Crossfire or Tracer for the module. Modern radios are much better at solid 2.4 than older protocols we call used so you may not need a separate module..
Hi Painless!
I'm a little confused about which module to get. Currently, I'm running DragonLink on the FrSky Taranis X9D Plus. I fly quads and fixed wing and use a head tracker, so I'm assuming I need the full blown version? I'm also concerned about how I'm affected with the inverter situation. =)
If you are using Crossfire on the lower frequencies then 2.4ghz links for RC are redundant. Longer range and lower latency with crossfire...
@@Painless360 true but idk how it behaves without diversity behind a big wooden structure with paint on it and i have heared that people had failsafes even with the crossfire becouse of the antenna being in the wrong place or smth. and i cant risk that happening with i abig heavy plane. Great and easy way to update. Still,in the world of extreme interference free long range, DragonLink is king.
Dragon link? Im most likely just ignorant but ive been flying and building quads for 3 years and I've never even heard of it. Either terrible marketing, extremely expensive, or just not as good. Which is it, or please explain my ignorance gently😉
