Finneas (17 - 18 years old) wrote this song for his band but felt it suited Billie's voice better. Billie's dance teacher asked for a song they could choreograph a dance to so they recorded this track for him. They sent it on sound cloud so he could download it and others heard it and their world started to change. The recording that's been heard millions of times is the actual first recording when Billie was 13. The music video was her 14th birthday gift given to her by her parents; recorded on Dec. 19, 2015 (no label, manager, etc.) Everyone is welcome to their own opinion and I feel "Lost Cause" does fit what Billie wanted to say. It may be more aimed at women who have experienced a not so great boyfriend and women that enjoy their female friendships. As for being "more commercial" there are definite jazzy, bluesy undertones to the song that are not main stream. She has said in the past, she just wants people to find at least one of her songs that appeals/speaks to them.
