this is one of the best performances i've ever heard. Her voice is so perfect for this song, her emotion is 120% and it's the first time I hear an italian accent that is not stereotypical or overacted, but it is actually very close to what an italian accent sounds like.
I have never heard a woman sing like that in my life. And I am not young. One of the greatest pieces of tape I have had the privilege to watch. I am stunned.

i kid you not, this video was when I fell in love with the Musical. That day I finally decided to watch this video that was always sitting there on my home page, I fell in love instantly and I knew then I had to see the show. I proceeded to find the other songs fromthe shpw and it only solidified my need to see the show. I finally did so, the 3rd to final performance, I cried.

+Allison Nisbet Both her and Steven Pasquale were brutally robbed. I love Neil Patrick Harris as much as the next person, but...excuse me...did the committee see Pasquale's 'It All Fades Away'? Or, 'One Second and a Million Miles'? Makes a person lose faith in the Tonys..
@@stalbansgirl-jg9yn Pasquale got snubbed that year which was crazy but the lineup was competitive I guess. O'Hara did have a shot at winning but the show's failure combined with The King & I announcement equalling a bookmark for Tony voters to award O'Hara the next year helped pave the way for Jesse Mueller, a talented break through actress playing a pop icon in a big hit that was not going to get a lot of love everywhere else. Menzel was also competitive considering the banner year she had had and positive response to If/Then. I think she was probably third but both her and Sutton Foster probably getting some "merit only" votes prevented Kelli from pulling off the upset.

This song and her performance of it is just ridiculous. Her pain is palpable and her sense of triumph in escaping Italy and her sister is so real. I wish I could have seen this show. Since I bought the album last week, I have listened to Almost Real, Another Life, To Build a Home and Always Better on repeat. The whole score is so beautiful. My fingers are crossed for her and JRB's Tony wins. Can't wait to get the sheet music.

And I sat at the harbor, watching the American ships.
And then I looked up and I saw an American smile down at me,
And I knew if I just took his hand, I could at last be free.
I could love him, I could want him, only take me from Italia,
far from Chiara, far enough that I could feel almost real.
Phenomenal!
I would classify this more as a modern opera, sad ending and all. Perhaps too operatic for typical Broadway audience. As for this performance, few divas could ever surpass this!

Unless you know something we don't know, that's not official yet. The Tony Awards are on June 8th, I believe. I don't know what competition she faces, but I find it hard to believe that there's anyone better.

I am not a huge fan of KO'H. Her voice is perfect, yes. Her tone is flawless, yes. But every time I see her perform, I'm bored. There's not a lot of life behind her eyes for me. Not a lot of depth in her feeling. It all feels a little clinical to me. That being said, this was probably the most stunning thing I've ever heard her sing. I liked this a lot.

I can understand that, and have heard similar opinions from a few people. I don't know her work well enough, haven't gotten to see her in anything live; I did kind of fall in love with her from the cast recording of LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA, which was my personal crack, back around 2005-06 (I still love it, of course). She is really magnificent here; I got the impression she connected especially deeply with this character, and the whole show and project in general. It's such a shame that the show didn't have more success on Broadway, or on tour, because I found it to be just wonderful, when I saw the tour production, twice, in Dallas, starring Elizabeth Stanley and Andrew Samonsky. They were both excellent, and Ms Stanley got huge audience reaction, especially for this song. It is so moving.
