  • In this lesson I show you how to properly notate short notes in your big band charts.
    Elliot Deutsch is a composer and arranger of big band music in Los Angeles, CA. His arrangements and orchestrations have been performed and recorded by Arturo Sandoval, Martina McBride, Big Phat Band, Take 6, and many others. Deutsch's collaborations with electro swing producer Atom Smith have been streamed over a million times on Spotify. As a freelance trumpeter, Deutsch has toured with Solomon Burke and The Mutaytor, and he performs regularly with the polka band Die Sauerkrauts and the party band That Vibe.

    What a TIME to be alive! Videos on big band arranging, of that quality, for free?
    I learned some stuff on jazz arranging in my Conservatory years, but you got me into it again.
    Now the question is: where would I find musicians to play and record that kind of music when I don't really have the network anymore?
    Thank you so much for everything, Elliot!

      I am not sure if there is a good resource for finding local players. Maybe bring your arrangements to your local college or high school band directors and seeing if they'll use some class time to read through your charts.

    Short lesson good. You've covered one simple point and if we get it that's enough for a moment. And like a few other points you've raised on your marvelous channel, there's things I maybe knew, or at least suspected, before but you feel better when you've heard someone actually confirm it.

    2:25 was a total cringe... so good you make a video about this Elliot! By the way, I think that Dave Weckl told the story on one of his lice streams about the same thing that Jerry Hey always preaches, bit similar but then for the eight notes.
    Good to see you back by the way onthe tube!

    So happy to see that you are still making videos!!!!! By the way in one of your lessons about writing rhythm section parts you said that you would release a video on writing for rhythm guitar ( Even though there is not a guitarist in the school ensemble that I write for, a brief introduction to the function of the instrument in a big band setting would be much appreciated)

    Hello, I have a little question: how it will sound tenuto with staccato?
    graphically horizontal dash and dot.

    • @PandemoniumBigBand
      @PandemoniumBigBand  Рік тому

      That is not an articulation that is used in jazz orchestra music. It has specific meaning for other styles of music, but for jazz band I would avoid the staccato-tenuto combination articulation marking.

    01:11 Not to mention all of the rehearsal time it saves. OR if someone is sight-reading your chart - the less thinking they have to do because it looks confusing is more likely to result in having the chart sound right the FIRST time! K.I.S.S. Keep It Simple - Stupid!

    I'll vouch for this by horn players that corrected me - gently - on one of my first studio charts; Big Band or Pop IS NOT the same writing format as Orchestral music. To simplify - ha ha - Big Band music is written as simply as possibly (Whole Note instead of Whole note - tied to an 8th note, or dotted half noted tied to an 8th note as an example).

    Great video Elliot. Strangely enough I was looking at a published arrangement recently which looked horrible for all the reasons you have mentioned above - it looked a nightmare to play which actually could be simplified somewhat by just changing some of the semiquavers to other measures with accents. Keep on posting - they are much appreciated!

    So much truth in this short video. I think the "why" of this video is important, too. I was enlightened by a student once, when I pointed out these same things and talked about the importance of readability. His response was "Yes, I can write a quarter note with a dot instead of 8th/8th rest, but just putting the 8th notes in gives the same sound and takes less time than putting all of those articulations." The MuseScore generation? 🤣
