I found it way too campy considering my expectations from Eggers' previous films. Some scenes could have had Frankie Howerd in the background and been cut into Carry on Vampire. The Herzog one is superior and even the first part of the De Palma (Keanu accent accepted)
Your mention of Mel Brooks brought to mind my introduction to Roman Palanski and his Dance of the Vampires: a 1967 comedy horror film. When I originally watched it late night on BBC2 in the 70s I was genuinely frightened by the audacious surrealism and a great performance by Roman himself. I now judge all Dracula remakes against this bizarre film.
Hi Peter. I'm a new subscriber from South Wales. Happy New Year. You have whetted my appetite! I've been looking forward to Nosferatu for ages. I hope it'll make up for Alien Romulus which I was really disappointed by. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice redressed the balance somewhat, but Nosferatu is what I've been waiting for! All the best Paul
Great review! I'm busting to see the Brazilian movie "Ainda Estou Aqui" in 2025 but I have no idea when or if it will come to Newcastle, Australia. Our city has really turned its back on arthouse, classic, and foreign language cinema which is really weird considering the digital revolution could've made this kind of big screen content more available, not less.
Perhaps it's time for film makers to put these to bed, projects that revolve around tired old horror tropes, the vampire, the zombie, the possessed, the anti christ.
A beautifully shot yet unnecessary re-make. The best shot was lost, the scene where the vampire dissolves in the sun's rays. A perfect image since it utilises the magic of cinema to suggest the triumph of whatever. There were Expressionist touches but the best ones, shadows and portents of the dark times to come, were absent. I felt sorry for Skarsgard, he clearly wanted a different role.
Loved it. Great atmospherics and a scary vampire because he was depicted as a lively corpse and not a sexy vamp.

Along with Dafoe returing to Nosferatu, Nicholas Hoult played Renfield in the underrated comedy film... Renfield with Nicolas Cage as Dracula.
I agree about Orlok not being that scary but I felt it's the seriousness of Orlok that was terrifying.
Excellent review! Can't wait for '"The Brutalist". Happy New Year from Athens, Greece.

I loved this movie.
Holt improves with each viewing.

Thanks Paul - happy new year!
Don’t waste your time and money on this crap.
I wholeheartedly disgree. The realism blew me away
Pure art cinema
Mesmerising baroque gothic dream

I was really looking forward to it but came away mildly entertained but feeling it was pointless. Nothing new

its is an eternal cycle returning to renew itself again and again and again and again........
Is Herzog sueing?
Style over substance. Again for eggers. The Substance was more terrifying and better.

Crazy take
Those bloody annoying small clips ”Peter Bradshaw VLOG” between every cut doesn’t add anything but the will to leave the channel.
hello again william
I'm not at all interested in this one, I'm sick of Nosferatu. Any modern horror film with vampires is a no-no for me.
back in your coffin then mate, the last 100 years of film and TV thankfully ignores your opinion
Waste of money and time this film is so poor 👎👎
