  • Petrified Forest's own Long Logs and Agate House Trail on full display!
Long Logs and Agate House Trail is a paved, 2.6 mile loop trail through a badlands landscape with many intact petrified logs, some of the park's longest!
About 218 million years ago, flood waters carried fallen trees to this spot. After being quickly covered with sediment they slowly petrified - their organic matter replaced by silica minerals over millions of years. Some of these prehistoric trees stood 200 feet (61 m) tall. This pile-up of logs is an ancient log jam, brought to the surface again through erosion.
Thank you for staying on the trail - watch where you step and leave things as they are.
At the beginning of the trailhead located on the eastern gate to the Rainbow Forest Museum parking lot at our designated Long Logs and Agate House area, a QR code on the wayside sign directs visitors to this video. The intended uses are previewing the trails to assist in trip planning, viewing the trails when inaccessible, and discovering more of the park's beautiful destinations.
Stay on designated trails when in developed hiking areas. The park offers a variety of off-trail and back-country hiking. Find detailed information on the park website and at park facilities.
