Great, engaging interview! Ego and swagger can be positive, as long as it can be backed up. Thank you Russell for mentioning Linda Creed and Thom Bell and giving them the credit they deserve. Imagine if Linda had lived longer what she could have churned out? RIP Linda......
This is amazing. Thank you so very much for this Gad. For nearly 50 years I have been listening to Mister Thompkins' voice, wondering if there would ever be another like it. I am convinced there will not. What an amazing sound he and The Stylistics had. I know the hits by heart, every note. They never, ever get old. Russell Thompkins Jr. you have enriched my life so much and I thank you for the happiness you leave in your wake.
Gad...I never thought I would see Russell Thompkins on your podcast. I love the Stylistics and have been a proud supporter on Patreon for a few months now. You have a diverse group of supporters that love what you do...keep on keeping on brother.
I absolutely love Russell! I am a Philly girl who LOVED the Stylistics. I was 12 when I first heard them and am 62 now. Best times of my life when I listened to the Stylistics. Thank you Russell.
The Stylistics reached the number 1 spot here in the UK charts with I Can't Give You Anyone (But My Love), great song and unique unforgettable voice, lovely interview
I'm staggered that they never had a Number One, they were massive in the 70's Philly Sound movement, on both sides of the Atlantic. It's the sound of my youth! Nice one Dr Saad!
I've tried for years to remember who sung "I'm Gonna Win" found out through another one of Mr. Thompson's other online interviews that it was him. As a performing vocalist, I appreciate that song by Russell so much. I love his falsetto and as a Tenor still performing well into my late 60's, I know the physical blessing it is for him to still deliver. But "I'm Gonna Win" is my favorite Russell Thompkins, Jr song. It's a crooner's delight and challenge
MR THOMPKINS ! ANGEL VOICE ON EARTH ,NOW ,ALWAYS , WE WILL ALWAYS LUV YOUR GIFTS ! YOU RE NUMBER 1 WITH US ! SEPTEMBER 19 2018 ! HIT WITH OUR HEARTS ,EARS LIVES ,WE LIVE YOU MR THOMPKINS ,YOU ARE THE BES T , IVE TRIED TO SING LIKE YOU SINCE I FIRST HEARD YOU IN LATE 60 S , YOU ARE MY FAV ! AMEN A TRUE FAN OF YOUR VOICE ! AMEN RA
Great interview with a truly great singer for 55 years. Only the most amazing singers can still sing and tour in other countries, all over the US. Be guest singers with huge symphony orchestras, and be asked to sing with Brian Wilson and the Beachboys. With Alicia. Keys on TV speci.. and sing Hamish Stuart's lead song " A Love of Your Own"... with AWB....on Tonight Show. At Grammys, at Carnegie Hall... And still sound fantastic at 70. Russell Thompkins jr can and does. Keep it up Russell. 🎶🎤🎶
Thank you so much for the interview, Dr. Saad. It’s always so enjoyable listening to that emotional and nourishing music. Thank you to Mr. Thompkins for giving so much great music to the world. Very impressive with the Mayer Hawthorne mention. Raphael Saadiq also did an album back in I think 2006-07 that was also in that “old school” soul style. And I’m sure many other lesser-known contemporary musicians have produced “throwback”-type songs. Do you also like the music of the O’Jays? I’m not the least bit surprised with Mr. Thompkins’ mention of the Whispers, they’re another great “super group”, they made lots of great music from the 70’s well into the 80’s.
I know exactly where Russell made an error in a song during a performance...9:20 If you know Russell and the songs he recorded, you know he ALWAYS sang the song exactly as it was recorded. This one time on the chorus he lost the note and was an octave lower...he just gradually worked up to note he was suppose to be on and noone even noticed it. That was and still is the professional performer he is. It's with the group of 5 guys, Blue outfits...in mid 70's. Betcha By Golly you will find it too. 🎵💫🎵
Just to be pedantic, the Spinners biggest hits were produced in Philly but they were from Detroit and were on Motown for 10 years before they switched to Atlantic and started working with Tom Bell.
nice interview. please do more non-political interviews like this. very entertaining. maybe interview ariel hewani lol. i'd like to hear his story about how he came up as a journalist. maybe he will blow you off tho lol
I think there's two _completely different_ kinds of "ego". One is deluded and the other isn't, and they are unrelated to each other. The deluded ego can be either productive or unproductive, but is always deluded. The "ego" that isn't deluded is simply the "I", which is merely a logical entity - a mere identity, with no substance other than that.
The naturalness and control of his falsetto is UNMATCHED....by ANYBODY....EVER.
What a legendary voice Russell Thompkins voice is everything.
My youngest son is named after Russell Thompkins his 👨 dad and I are true fans of him i was listening to him last 🌃 night ❤❤❤❤❤😊

One of my favorite groups. Truly a legend and class act.

Yeah, you finally got him on! Good for you!
Russell Thompkins Jr. is a superstar.

The Stylistics debut album still sounds great, today. I can remember buying the album and being blown away, by the sound.
The Stylistics reached the number 1 spot here in the UK charts with I Can't Give You Anyone (But My Love), great song and unique unforgettable voice, lovely interview
You finally made it Gad. How does it feel doc?
I'm staggered that they never had a Number One, they were massive in the 70's Philly Sound movement, on both sides of the Atlantic. It's the sound of my youth! Nice one Dr Saad!
Not sure whether they had a Number One but they were pretty big in New Zealand during the 70's.

They certainly did have a number one pop in the U.K. in August 1975 with ‘I can’t give you anything (but my love) x
I loved ‘I’m gonna win’ and I also love ‘Michael and me’ from the later period with Van McCoy x

Finest falsetto voice ever
Legendary Stylistics❤
I heard their music along with the Bee Gees back in the day. I could never sing that high.

Dave Rubin referred to these guys as a "random band" and now I don't think he's ever coming back on Gad's podcast.
