For my family size of 3 with occasional family gatherings, Class III and a side gas powered Blackstone Griddle has been working perfectly. Regardless size, you cannot go wrong with Kamado Joe grill. One my best purchases I've ever made for life. I purchased Weber grills many years back, and after the Kamado Joe with the side Blackstone griddle, I had to dispose all Weber grills. The flavor and the charcoal heat source is amazingly easy to control once you get used to it. So much fun, and it's so efficient. After use, we always throw sweet potatoes and potatoes to the charcoal and closed the air, and we have the treat using the exhausting charcoal heats to avoid the heat waste. ;-)

Fantastic video James...... I really think you have the "comparison" process down pat, in this and several of your other videos... which is incredibly helpful for all of us grillers out here.... you are a great resource and your way of presenting is spot on - keeping it simple... and my wife agrees, "size matters".....LOL!!

After your Joe Jr video and this, I think I'm going to get the Joe Jr now, and save for a big boy next spring. The Jr can probably do most of the single protein stuff I need, but I also like to do sides and all that when I have the space.
Oh, and I used to have a large BGE, so I understand where you're coming from!

I understand what your are saying about the economics and efficiency, But I think you can’t go wrong buying the most you can afford. That said one has to factor in accessories as they don’t come cheap but they do make these grills so enjoyable. These grills are truly the best you can get right now IMHO. Thank you for an objective approach.

That was really helpful. I've been pondering this question for over a year with regard to which to buy for the cottage . But seriously, I had to decide between a Big Joe 2 and a Classic 3 over a year ago and I don't regret buying the extra real estate, and seriously anybody who spends 1700$ on a grill and then complains about burning 5$ more charcoal needs to turn in their man card

Great comparison review. I’m upgrading from medium BGE I have had for 8 years and honestly is just too small. Although the kids have all moved out, I do like cooking more than less meat when I go to the effort. I think the 4” extra for Big Joe 3 is not necessary for me, and I would not cook sides on it. However not having the slow roller seems like a disadvantage on the Classic Joe. (Understand you can add it for $250.). I also have a Traegar 1300 Timberline at the other house and love the convenience, even though everyone prefers the true smoke flavor from the BGE. I saw your review of the Konnect Joe and was thinking maybe this was a good compromise. My concerns on that choice is the lack of slow roller and also smaller size. (It’s still not clear to me what size the Konnect Joe most compares to in the non electronic Kamado Joes.). I know you have them all, and it’s always hard to say, but if you were going to pick one, and money is NOT the driver, what would you pick for someone like us? Always appreciate your input.

I had a bunch of guests for Independence Day weekend and tried to cook 15# of chicken wings on my Vision kamado which is the same size as BGE L and Joe Classic…almost had wings falling off and it took way too long. I had several hangry guests by the time dinner was served. This convinced me that the Big Joe or BGE XL was needed and I’ll keep the Vision for smaller cooks. I’m selling my 22 year old offset smoker which has been great, but Big Joe 3 arrives next week so time to move on.

    • @SmokingDadBBQ
      @SmokingDadBBQ  2 роки тому +1

congrats on your new Joe... the sloroller gives you the entire grill space which makes either model seem larger. when i had a large BGE it too was 18" just like the classic but the plate setter was 15" so managing the hot spots reduced the useable grill space to about the same as a medium egg. one thing i noticed on KJ is how much more i could fit on the same dimensions

I am loving these comparison videos. I have a suggestion for another one. Can you compare the airflow of Joe Jr vs. classic and big Joe (without the Slo Roller). I at times I cook small boston butts and brisket-flats and these meats can fit both my Joe Jr. and classic. My gut feeling is even if I cook them at the same temperature, classic will probably have a better airflow compared to Jr, hence, the flavors will be better. But that is just my guess. Who knows, I might be completely wrong and Joe Jr. might have better airflow. With Joe Jr. prices going down a little bit in the last few months, I feel a lot of people have gotten a Jr. recently. So this video might be a useful one for many smokers.

I only have a Classic III. The Big Joe is definitely cool, but two things I dont think you mentioned that are factors for me: the Big Joe has a larger activation barrier. What I mean is that I am much more likely to fire up the Classic for just a side dish or a couple burgers. Big Joe-no way its worth the time to fire it up for little stuff. The second reason: I dont want to further tempt myself to eat meat all the time. I value the limits the Classic puts on me and the effects that could have on my health. Lastly, I’d rather have two Classics than one Big Joe. That level of granularity appeals to me. You could have the rotis going on one and sides in the other. Two seems more flexible than one.

For some that won't be an issue, but for someone who perhaps has a small deck for example, the size differences between the two might be a consideration. 1) James, what are your thoughts on using a chimney starter in place of a grill torch to get your coals up up temperature quickly? Do you think there is a danger of cracking your fire box if you dump the hot coals from the chimney directly into the basket? 2) You hinted at it, but if you don't have to buy a pit controller for the BJ3, the difference in price between it and the CJ3 becomes less punishing.

Of those two, the Big Joe is the proper choice. The two negatives I'd give it are:
    1. If you're just throwing on like 2 burgers or something you're going to feel really silly considering how much space you're wasting
    2. Its price is ridiculous... but I would say this about KJ in general. My 22" kamado (which includes the Slow N Sear Platinum bundle of the Slow N Sear, EasySpin grate, and Drip N Griddle pan, which sells separately for like $280 or something) plus all the Kickash accessories for it - including the Kickash Divider I've never even used - costed me the same as an 18" Classic III, and the Big Joe is about $700 more than that. When you get to the price tier that the Big Joe III sits at, you may as well consider real premium options like the Komodo Kamado lineup.

Looking to get a Kamado Joe so I can do burgers and steaks on charcoal with a good sear. I already own a Recteq 700 with the side smoke box. Most smoking will be done on the recteq. Would you recommend the classic or big joe in this situation. 80% of cooking is for 2-4 people with the exception of holidays like Mother’s Day and 4th of July.

    • @SmokingDadBBQ

you can fit a large brisket (17lbs) on the classic with some creativity (drape it over wood chunks for example) and the raised grid accessory adds a lot of useable space. I prefer the big joe as it makes full meal cooking much easier but for 3-4 people the classic i think could manage just fine

Ugh! Still can't decide between the two. Right now I have a 55cm Weber. The Classic Joe is 45cm, The Big Joe is 61cm. The price difference is €800 so yeah... I'm using it mostly for chicken, ribs, steaks + some vegetables, and smoking 1.5kg salmon side. Also planning to use it for pulled pork etc. Household of 2 adults + 1 child, having sometimes people over in the weekends. Cheers from The Netherlands!

I really appreciate all your videos. I really want to get into some cooking on a Kamado style cooker. I’m kinda hesitant, they aren’t cheap, and I want to make sure I’ll use it enough. I don’t always have the time to do such long cooks, but man does the food look good. I saw a 24” Louisiana Kamado at Costco for $600. I know it’s not quite what the Kamado Joe is, but it’s a 24” Kamado for $600. It does have some nice features, and I think I would get it over the BGE, but I’m wondering if I will buy it and want the KJ. Then I worry that if I spend the $2400 for the KJ that I won’t get the use out of it. Thinking if I could put the slow roller from KJ in the Louisiana that I would be set up pretty good.

Just look for a local dealer using the KJ website. It’s the same price usually and you’re helping a local business. My local dealer threw in some charcoal and when I paid for delivery (a very reasonable price given the distance and size of the BJ3) they set it up so I could smoke right away.

Given that a Brisket has to rest for hours after you take it off, the fact that you can't fit anything else on at the same time on the classic isn't much of a drawback. You can easily put more on afterwards. Also, when you want to cook multiple things you often want multiple temps (sometimes even with one thing). That's why I'm a Classic + Jr. fan. I admittedly haven't had a big joe or equivalent but when I'm entertaining, my pair of grills has always seemed more than enough and it's cheaper.

    • @SmokingDadBBQ
