    Sensible accessories. I wanted the 'R', but finding one where I live is like finding hen's teeth...so I was lucky to find a good deal on the 'S'. This was the right choice since it is still quite capable off-road, but also incredibly capable on long trips. The susoension is really impressive too. Comfort mode is plush and in Sport mode it handles like a long-legged sport bike.

    Nice! Sharp bike. Bit of my experience with the 1290s below.
    The factory handguards, mirrors, and levers all rely on the same bar mount. When the mirror or handguard take a hard hit, these mounts break (broke 2 of them myself) and everything on the bar goes floppy (held on by outside bar-end mount for the handguard). Doubletake mirrors, and handguards zip tied at the inner mount to the bars instead of bolted prevent this...
    A real skid plate is pretty important for any adventurous wheeling, at least in my rocky forested area. My aluminum KTM plate is bashed to bits, but has likely prevented a good chunk of damage. Though, it has dented my header at the rear quite a bit.
    Its a heavy bike to pick up, so I find myself dragging it to orientate it pretty often. I feel the bar bags would get in the way of that. Or maybe not!
    OnX Offroad is insane for mindless wandering with no service.
    Mosko Moto Reckless Revolver 80 gives this bike a ton of extra protection, and is still draggable/wont get hung up on rocks easily.
    The factory cast wheels have taken a MASSIVE amount of abuse, and are dented, chipped, and out of true...they finally gave up this past weekend after a 2 years of hard wheeling at 15-23PSI. Sharp rock at high speed caused a massive dent/debeaded. Trail repair was a steel mallet (from a passing SXS), then epoxy because the mallet cracked the rim causing another leak, then a $20 12v air pump. Got me home. Woody's Wheel Works is building me a set of spoked with Motoz knobbies.

      So cost wise- bags is it better to do the crash bars, radiator guards with tires and rims or get a 1290 R and adjust suspension manually? I prefer the software option of the S but cost wise, is it better to convert the S or buy an R?

    How do you find the 1290 S offroad - is the smaller wheel size an issue 19 vs 21 inch? And any issues with the electronic suspension over tough terrain and hits? I'm unsure if I should convert mine to offroad (spoked wheels, knobbies, bars etc..)

    • @FlamesAdventureS
      @FlamesAdventureS 7 місяців тому +1

      I did some trans euro trail tracks in France with gravel & forest tracks and sometimes tracks with bigger rocks, the 19 inch wheel and also the suspension was ok for that. I usually ride on asfalt roads but I change to spoke wheels when riding ofroad tracks for some days. A conversion is a bit expensive and there' also a SAR 😁 cheers 👍

      The S offers versatility of high performance on and off road. I would rather have excellent ktm 1290 S chassis and suspension offroad than a klr650, super tenere 1200, etc. Street tires can go on the r and try riding fast but 21 inch tires and off-road focused suspension will be a limitation for fast/aggressive street riding.

      Hello, it is a 2021 model, I usually drive on asphalt, so I bought the S version for the best 'on road' performance. For occasional off-road rides my main change is switching to spoke wheels. All other mods and the luggage setup are useful both off-road and on-road. With the suspension and ride mode of the SAS in offroad mode it did a very good job.
