At the beginning , back in ...
... 1988 , Hellscrack first played live at the Gibus ( Paris ), opening the show for Batmobile and Pussy Killers . Back then , the trio featured Gambeat ( double-bass , vocals ) and Xoumoul ( guitar ) ex two former members of the Sgegs Boogie Boys and Docnaze , later nicknamed Shuman ( drums , vocals ).
This original line-up lasted for about a year , playing live in festivals and psychobilly concerts in Paris ( New Moon , Gibus , New Morning ), Dijon , Troyes , Roman , and also in Belgium alongside the psycho trendsetters of the day such as Jekills , Swampys , Madsin , Klingonz , Skitzo , Coffinnails , Krewmen , Meteors , and La Mano Negra for the release of their " Puta's Fever " album in Pigalle .
That is when we decided to have a break , the trio being absorbed by the French Lovers . But for five years , we nevertheless managed to play a few covers as a trio when there were encores at French Lovers gigs .
... Until Gambeat left us to play with what was left of La Mano Negra , and Xoumoul and I decided to reform Hellscrack at the beginning of 1994 : it took us a year after we both rehearsed in some squats , garages and cellars ...
So we were going round in circles until we had the idea of asking an old mate we got to know on tour to join us : the most famous bass player from the West of France , the very much in demand, ex-star of the show-business : Kaloo ( Elmer Food Beat )! That is how we ended up in Nantes a few days later . And after a three-weeks rehearsal , we went to l' ile d' Yeu to play our " first " gig , at the end of 94 .
So we got going again , and we rapidly recorded a 6 track demo ( tape ) and Luigi ( family ) became our tour manager . We still played kick ass , nasty rock 'n' roll , but more straightforward , in the Motorhead style .
Numerous gigs throughout France followed , entertaining customers and audiences in cafes and festivals alike , as well as in clubs , sharing the stage with such billtoppers as the Fleshtones , the Inmates , Jason and the Scorchers ...
But as Kaloo had other bands , the schedules got complicated . So we decided to do without him for a while at the end of 95 .
As Luigi also was the Happy drivers tour manager , we knew they were about to split up , so we asked their bass player Alain (ex- Wampas , Los Carayos , Mano Negra ) to join us . As he was into kick-ass music , he agreed .
We composed songs , rehearsed for a brand new set and released 1,000 copies of a Five track CD .
After some more time spent gigging at festivals or opening the show for such luminaries as Alvin Lee , Jason and the Scorchers , the Pogues or Guana batz , our vision of the musical direction for the band started to differ : Alain was into hard-core , Xoumoul was into metal-indus and I was into rock 'n' roll. So the songs sounded weird , the set was too ill-assorted , I lost interest in the band and decided to put it to an end for a while in 97 .
End of 2000 , mates from Wild West released their first album . They were looking for a support band . So we formed a band that soon resembled Hellscrack apart from the fact that Lolo (ex- Squealer ), back in Nantes after seven years in the States , joined us, and as Kaloo was back too , we were four.
For two years we kept gigging for fun playing cover songs . At the same time I built my own recording studio in order to rehearse and flesh out new songs in a powerful rythmic rock 'n' roll style , influenced by Lolo 's Australian rock 'n' roll style .
We recorded " Flesh and Steel " at home , it was released and produced by Brennus records in April 2004 .
We went on tour quite a lot , still played in bars and showrooms , tattoo conventions , Harley Davidson meetings , but we also opened the show for great bands such as Nashville Pussy , Rose Tattoo , Supersuckers , Dr Feelgood ...
We also went on tour in Spain , between Barcelona and Valencia , thanks to our former double-bass player Gambeat who now lives in Spain and plays with Manu Chao .
In 2006 , Xoumoul left the band so we ended up a three some once again .
So , we composed new songs for the next album , we also played with Scandinavian bands ( Crucified Barbara , Badmachine , Texas Mother Fuckers ....), American and Australian bands ( Nashville Pussy , Supersuckers , the Saints ...), went on tour in Great-Britain for a dozen gigs with our mates from Viktims , and at the same time we recorded and finally released " Rusted " ( spring 2009 ), distributed by Mass Prod .
