Sounds about right. Home owners trying to cash in with the cheapest possible expense. Given the cost of their investment, you'd think they'd recognise they are not going to buy good security for $20.
Yeah, most people who know anything about this stuff say spend an amount on security that is commensurate with that value of the item you’re trying to secure. Houses are pretty pricey, so $20 is pretty ridiculous. Unless they back it up with a decent alarm, then the key box is really just to stop someone strolling in.
The inter workings of these locks are identical to the MasterLock version. The outer case and door are slightly different, but the interworking appear to be identical. I used a crude shim made from a soft drink can to pick one left on my front door by a service company.
Then they get rain water in them and you need pliers to open them. Trust me I went to a place which had one like this but it was raining and the wheels were so stiff I needed to use a pair of pliers to set the wheels and pull the lever. So if you want to make this more secure just stick it in a bucket of salt water before you mount it
Well, now you know how much five Chinese stars is worth. I have tried this on a couple of those style combo wheels and even I can do this, with no proper tools, using an exacto knife for a feeler. Now they replaced it with a keyed mechanism. The key looks like a saw blade with perfectly equal ups and downs. A couple of nights ago, my wife took out some garbage but forgot the key. One of the aforementioned recyclers zipped the new lock open for her in a few seconds. Suddenly she thinks my new hobby is a fine hobby for an old boy to get into. :):) I think she met the guy who is teaching the other street inhabitants how to get into these things. He told her that he opens up the front doors on closed businesses, so that people can sleep in the empty stores when weather is bad. There are many closed businesses on my once fashionable shopping street, here in Canada.
You should take a look at the Wag!(dog walking service app) lockbox. They will send you one for cheap/free when you sign up for the service. The airbnb places I've been to, either used electronic door locks, where the owner had to share the code, or the lockbox needed to be electronically unlocked first.
The locks provided by Wag (the dog walking service) also have the same issue. However, their locks are so loosely fitted, you don't even need the filler guage. The Xool lock box's rating is heavily weighted to 5 stars because it is part of Amazon's Giveaway Program. Amazon will send free products to folks who will submit reviews on said products. Good reviews sell products on Amazon. The problem is folks almost universally give good revews so Amazon will continue to send them free things they can sell on ebay. I have a customer who set up a numerical keypad that he can change the codes over his phone, this then unlocks the door and turns off the alarm. the only way to lock the door from outside is by entering code again, thus making alarm come back on. So a new guest gets a new code today and its the same for however long they stay, after they leave he disables that code forever. seems to be working well for him, 6 properties for over 2 years and no real trouble. I cant imagine it being cheap, but anything worth having isnt cheap i guess.
The quickest way into one of these boxes is to open the window then hit the bottom edge of the window downwards with a hammer, the pot metal of the door breaks at the corner between the bottom or the box and the back plate, the locking pawls disengage and the door falls open. I have done this (in a safe and legal way) and it worked first hit.
Chris Aylott But surreptitious opening lets you copy the key and wait for the homeowners to return remove the keybox and put their valuables back in the flat!
I suppose if I rented out something like that, I'd install a keycode burglar alarm on the inside that I could change after each guest (and have only the keypad accessable to a guest, the actual control box being in a locked wall box only I had the key to)

Bosnianbill Something like here is my recommendation on padlocks, house door locks, bike locks, trailer hitch locks. That’s sort of thing. Thank you for all the great vids. I manage a large facility and you have really helped me over the years.
Digital key box with a 4-way dead bolt mounted to a wall is about the safest way to lock a key up short of trying to grind open the box to get into it. If you're smart, having a camera pointed at the key box would be an easy way to nab a thief in the event they tried such tactics.
But if you have to have a situation where keys must be available for multiple people without creating several keys for each person and having to change locks if they leave.
if you are wanting to retire so you can tape your funds i think you can draw the funds without retirement. the reason for retirement according to another video is because the mental state of old people can compromise their work performance. we viewers are ok with you taking longer to pick a lock that is what video editing is for to remove excessively boring stuff caused by degraded picking performance. i can understand a surgeon having to retire because mistakes can lead to malpractice conditions. but dont worry there is no such thing as malpractice for lock picking so you are safe from any lawsuits here. so i or we think you are safe to work to 100.
All cheap clones of the Masterlock 5401 combo wheel box.. which uses the same, unupdated design as the REALLY cheap boxes. (so yeah, bad)... I HATE leaving keys in lock boxes period, it's just bad policy, but customers demand it sometimes... The two that I've found that are a BIT more secure are the Kidde / Supra Keysafe and believe it or not the Masterlock 5422 series pushbutton key safe (same idea, just a bit larger)... They both are far from idea, and I'd take the Kidde over the Masterlock because it's a much tougher lock box to crack into by force with screwdrivers, etc.... but I still hate key safes on principle. I've missed out on quite a few episodes, are there any that you can recommend?
I'm pretty sure I mentioned this in the video - perhaps you fast forwarded through it... No, you cannot shim it. The locking lever CANNOT depress UNLESS the flat spots on the wheel are lined up. There is a physical block.
Had to install one for a realtor and he told me to set the code as: 1-2-3-4. 😂 I tell him that’s stupid. So he says how about 4-3-2-1. 😂 I gave up and said that’s perfect.
Well, most people are not good pickers and need code they can remember. I think it is best to deposit a key at friendly neighbour, but if you are worried they will not be home then maybe under the doormat:) Do not waste money on unnecessary locks.
Yet again Bosnian Bill shows that combination locks with individual wheels are pretty much all pieces of junk and should be avoided for anything where security actually matters.
I have a much nicer one then in this video but it too was easy to decode. You will have to pay quite a bit of money to get one that is relatively safe. I don't recommend them at all.
If it is similar to this style with the combination wheels then its incredibly easy to break into. Most products by masterlock are terrible at being locks. However 99% of people don't know how to pick locks or get through combination locks so even garbage tier locks can act as a deterrent .
So basically put this on the wall and the key under the plantpot

@Bosnianbill what about those digital ones Realtors use? I think they are push button code locks
So what would you recommend for this type of situation?
Not to deal with shady Airbnbs. Cities are cracking down as they cut taxes for schools and parks.
But if you have to have a situation where keys must be available for multiple people without creating several keys for each person and having to change locks if they leave.
Could you just feel for the clicks by tensioning the opening switch cos the locking catch is parallel to the wheel nubs and the open switch.
Where have you got those mark and pfennige?
This is why people I know use electronic keypads that are programmable
Just need to make sure you don't get one that the electronics can be knocked out of the door, and the lock bypassed......
if you are wanting to retire so you can tape your funds i think you can draw the funds without retirement.
the reason for retirement according to another video is because the mental state of old people can compromise their work performance.
we viewers are ok with you taking longer to pick a lock that is what video editing is for to remove excessively boring stuff caused by degraded picking performance.
i can understand a surgeon having to retire because mistakes can lead to malpractice conditions.
but dont worry there is no such thing as malpractice for lock picking so you are safe from any lawsuits here.
so i or we think you are safe to work to 100.
putting the key under the landscape rock is much safer!
Derek Broestler I think ASSA lock tubes with a good core are the best keyed lockboxes. Not sure who sells the best combo lock boxes.
So can you tell us which one you recommend?
what would be a good key box?
*The whole concest of a key box is a bad idea, most of them use cheap locks.*
@Jason Williams a combination like this should be ok www.kaba.com.au/media/916682/v2/File/x-10-brochure.pdf
@@picsi-software Milspec security products make me hard.
Do you have a good combo lock suggestion or are they all trash? I imagine BEST has a decent one but.....
Can you shim the locking lever.?? Spring loaded or must move the trigger?
I'm pretty sure I mentioned this in the video - perhaps you fast forwarded through it... No, you cannot shim it. The locking lever CANNOT depress UNLESS the flat spots on the wheel are lined up. There is a physical block.
@@bosnianbill I get all fuzzy and warm watching good Lock Porn.
I miss details sometimes. Thanks Bill
junk man - 🤣
Had to install one for a realtor and he told me to set the code as: 1-2-3-4.
Wow! I have the same combination on my luggage!
Almost every construction site ive worked on get locked up with those x.x
Made me laugh laugh
Great demo
Haha. God is it really 18 years ago that we in germany saw these coins the last time? What r u doing with all the old Mark-Coins?
A lot of junk in locks!!! 😂😂👍🏻
Not really lock boxes, just minor inconvenience boxes.
Things seemed a bit wrong as the more expensive they got the lower the star rating.
People rate things based on value.
I would be less happy for $23.99 than I would for $18.99
Wow! Deutsche Mark 😂
Kidde push button key lock boxes are better.
Great way to get your Airbnb broken into.
Their address are online and burglars and private eyes are watching.
lustig das da Deutsche Mark (DM) Münzern drin sind ^^
Yet again Bosnian Bill shows that combination locks with individual wheels are pretty much all pieces of junk and should be avoided for anything where security actually matters.
If security actually mattered to someone, they wouldn't be renting out their house for Airbnb in the first place.
my gf has a lockbox of masterlock... idk if they are great tbh :/ Do you recommend a lockbox? its mainly for the sparekey
@@gadgetman36 from the looks of it its the masterlock MLK5415 my gf has theirs multiple E and D variants she has a green grey one
I'm thinking they keep making a new brand name and buying new Amazon reviews, as genuine poor reviews reduce sales on the old listing
Genius! Report them all.
We know how amazon works. It has to be the right price. Doesnt matter about quality.
hi bill
Can’t you just break it, if you want the key, since it is plastic?
