A very serious countenance, which probably intimidated the undergrads now and then, until her face breaks out into that very sweet smile. A charming person of a kind one doesn't come across very often anymore.

Charming people are among us still, we are blessed when we encounter them. 🌹

We live long & await the birth of another such as iris
We may not find our World able to fill the
Void of her presence, for many decades
She left us with so much to study,
While being an example of what I mean by a Real Winner of The Human Race!♠

It's such a shame that Iris Murdoch didn't live in the age of TED Talks.

I was at her college (after her time) where the tutors who knew her said that her students loved her.

An Unofficial Rose was made into a teleseries by BBC2 in 1974. It looks to have been exquisitely cast, written and directed... I wish it was available to watch, somewhere on the internet - anyone have any clues?

Her mind and body are held in balance: she was a writer, thinker, artist, philosopher; and she smiles from the mind. Egoless, charming, at one with the interviewer-critic.

    She reminds me of Waugh.

EM Forster thought Henry James overdid the form thing, so the life went out of his characters ... I think he said that.

Yes, though not all of his characters were flat as a result. The Portrait of a Lady, The Europeans, Washington Square and others - these have fully formed characters who lose nothing through James's preoccupation with form. You and Forster are right about many others though.

I've read that this fascinating historical document probably dates from 1962.

@@reginaldmolethrasher437 sexist comments not appropriate in context of first rate literature. No harm i suppose as Murdoch is dead. She'd probably have laughed off the comment in fact. However, feminist view is still to challenge comment that downgrades women to the level of their sexual attractiveness, bypassing their achievements and talents. However, I'm sure you won't let a silly thing like that bother you.

costernocht. At first I thought u were comparing their literary stature, that u were saying Sontag was shallow compared with Murdoch. Then I glanced at the responses to your comment, hoping to make sense of what u wrote, & then realized u were comparing their appearances. Somehow I don't think Sontag would've found your comparison to K.K. flattering, but at any rate I don't think Sontag or Murdoch would've cared what u thought, especially as u rate Kardashian so highly as to make the comparison in the first place. Somehow I doubt you've read either Sontag or Murdoch but if u keep listening to intelligent interviews like this one, maybe you'll grow out of your current puerile state. One can only hope.
