    In a former life, I worked in bike shops and sold a lot of accessories, including various bike bags. You're at a bit of a disadvantage with this type of pannier set because you have a cantilevered, seatpost-mounted rear rack. It lacks the lateral support and spoke protection that a traditional rear rack provides with two, sometimes three support struts on each side. And better panniers include some sort of tensioned hook system that attach the main bags to the rear dropouts. Adding a rigid panel inside the main compartment of any pannier will increase lateral stability. The best material for this is something called Coroplast: a lightweight, waterproof, corrugated plastic material that outdoor signs and post office sorting bins are made of. I did notice in your video is the main seams of the top bag are have bias binding on the inside to prevent the raw edges from unraveling. I couldn't see if that's carried throughout the construction, but it's a sign of enhanced quality. If you do have a nylon bag with any raw edges, turn the bag inside-out and *carefully* melt the raw edges with a candle flame. The trick is to melt them just enough so the individual nylon strands fuse together. Otherwise the raw edges will fray with use. When the fraying gets to the stitching, the seam will begin to fail.

      good info thanks Marc. I did end up having some problems with the bags hitting the spokes. I think if I used them again I'll have to go with a better rack system.

      I've bought this set too from a Chinese supplier on Amazon for just €22. I'm still waiting on delivery which is a little overdue but hopefully it will arrive but glad to see that the quality is going to be ideal for everyday use.
      Lixada is another name this company sell the same products under too.

    Thanks for showing the mounting. no one else seems to want to show that. I was concerned if they would mount and stay away from the wheels. Looks like they will. Thanks again

    Looks like a pretty good set, I have something similar and it's lasted well, worked quite well in the rain and in my experience the lettering is HiViz, if so you'll hopefully get some extra safety from that. Dry bags will help with critical stuff like electronics and sleeping bags. I would definitely consider a rack that has a leg down to the dropout to help keep the panier away from the wheel. I didn't see any mounts in the dropouts but you could use P clamps around the seat stay? Look forward to seeing your trip

      For the rain, I was planning on putting things into plastic bags and leaving it at that. I don't really plan on doing a lot of extreme riding so I think it'll be okay. I think I maybe I made a mistake getting the "floating" type of rack because of the lack of support for the bags, I thought it would be lighter and simpler, which it is, but I think the trader off might not be worth it. But never the less I'll have to make it work. thanks WAL!

    You need a rack with the vertical supports meant to hold panniers. The supports block the panniers from the wheels.

  • @RodrigoSilvaRocha
    @RodrigoSilvaRocha 4 роки тому +5

    The panniers to me are not the issue, your rear rack has very short "lateral support" (idk how to call them) so the panniers cas easily get into your spokes and cause an accident.

    • @BruceChastain
      @BruceChastain  4 роки тому +2

      yep, exactly right, they don't go down far enough. But this rack is sort of a light duty rack, it doesn't even have any vertical support and says it only support 9kg. But I'll have to deal with it.

    • @kevinjfeeney77
      @kevinjfeeney77 4 роки тому +2

      I wouldn't use it. As the bike shifts side to side the bag can go into the wheel. I would HIGHLY suggest getting a proper rack for pannier use.
      I have these. They're awesome for the price. But I'm looking for something in 3 pieces, where that top bag turns into a backpack and the sides are like shopping pannier bags with shoulder straps

    • @BruceChastain
      @BruceChastain  4 роки тому +1

      @@kevinjfeeney77 that actually happened a few times today while out, nothing really happened but it didn't sound good. What I've done to solve it was stretch a bungee from one side of the frame, over the rack, then to the other side, this creates a little barrier for the bags before they hit the wheel. It seems to work fine, did everything I could to get them to go into the wheels and they wont now. But what I don't like is that it because it's pulling down slightly on the rack, that basically makes the low weight limit even worse. But at the moment it's working and seems solid.

      I don't do "filtering" in heavy traffic and 98% of my riding is on open roads or streets so in the dark or most of the winter I have a piece of black plastic water pipe the same width as my handlebars I attach to the rear of my rack with hose clamps (also called jubilee clips here.)
      I put a flashing light either end and the idea is it makes me look wider on the road and hopefully encourages vehicles to give me a wider berth when passing me.
      Just loosen or tighten the screw's on the hose clamps a couple of turn's to add or remove the pipe. Easy peasy.
      I also have Bluetooth operated right and left indicators I use with this system when I'm going to be in town more especially at night.
      I also have mirrors and always wear a bright orange hi-vis.
      Just what I do to make myself hopefully a little safer on the dark roads.

    Just received mine, and on their own, they seem to work well, but the top bag doesn't have anything to tighten it so with nothing in the side bags, if I put a laptop on the top bag (it doesn't fit in either side pockets), the top bag just swings around and that's not too confidence inspiring
