I always used to go to Oxford Street. However, I now avoid it for the reasons you mentioned. If I go into central London now, it's usually to either Regents Street or Sloane Square. It's a shame that our once famous shopping street is now a 3rd rate ugly shopping experience.

It’s been a hellhole for a long time. Such a shame, and another example of the polarisation of society in the UK. I grew up in a middle class household in South London. My late mother was confectionery supervisor for the flagship Woolworths store on Oxford Street. It used to be full of aspirational but accessible stores and was a regular Christmas treat day out for us. Now we have a choice between the absolute seediness of Oxford Street or the completely unaffordable luxury stores elsewhere. I certainly wouldn’t take my granddaughters shopping on Oxford Street today.

I was born and brought up in Notting Hill Gate. Moved to West London in my early teens and finally when I got married the only place we could afford was a damp little flat in Forest Gate (don't get me started!) and finally escaped to the South Coast when we could afford a mortgage in 2000. Oxford Street used to be the jewel in the crown. So full of wonderful shops. OK some were a bit on the pricey side but you could spend hours having great fun just browsing and window shopping. At Christmas time it used to look so festive. You always had the "fly by nights" who would set up a sort of mini-market in empty shops with a fella acting a bit like an auctioneer to sell cheap and cheerful household goods and fake perfume. A stooge would be in the crowd of gawping shoppers to break the ice in the buying frenzy that ensued and there was a bloke posted outside on the lookout for the old bill. London has always had hawkers like this.
Around early 90's it started going very downhill with cheap souvenir shops selling tat that was identical to the shop two doors along. Takeaways abound with accompanying awful stinks.. Filthy pavements sticky with discarded chewing gum. By this time I had moved out and gone South and I can honestly say I have been up to London only under duress, maybe 3 or 4 times since 2013 which was when my mother died. The feeling of utter despair when pulling into Waterloo on the train and seeing those glorious and proud landmarks and then the feeling of happiness and relief when the train pulls out when it's time to go home again. It shouldn't be like this. The place is so overcrowded with entitled and rude tourists and incomers who couldn't give a crap. I couldn't believe the amount of these awful candy shops. Quite obvious what is going on there. The whole place is destroyed. Mayor Khan should be ashamed of the levels of crime, especially knife crime, but he isn't. London is now a lawless hellhole and now we get these thuggish little parasites coming down our way on day trips to do robbings.
Please make it stop. Only Reform UK seems to want to help this country get its mojo back again.

Very downhill with cheap souvenir shops selling tat- Cambridge is going the same way, very hard to park and expensive 5hours £25 - Cmabridge UNI owns many if not all of the shops and rents are sky high. Norwich which isnt going down, many shops are full, many shoppers on a Saturday and Sunday and very few if any 'souvenir' shops. How come ? Council own many of the shops and have a policy of keeping the rent very low with a view to renting to small businesses. So to sum, keep the rents and parking prices low with great access to car parks.

Because it was built fron stolen treasure looted from many of these same migrant countries and worse than this was done to its people in order to steal their wealth. The British ppl had pride because the stolen treasures brought them social and economic control and power, but now the money has dried up and the sons and daughters of the former opressed have arrived on the doorsteps of the generations of the opressors. I have absolutely no sympathy for Britain, because its leaders have never acknowledged nor repented of the wickedness that country perpetrated when it colonized more than half of the planet.
