    I just bought a Dr. Pepper and holy crap! I was blown away but please don’t make me pick between this and CW as I am a huge fan. This watch was my first GMT but it was pretty simple setting it up. At 40mm case and 13.2 thick it’s got great dimensions. I would have preferred Swiss movement but the movement on this watch is way above average. At this price point this watch is a huge, HUGE value and when you add in the creative Dr. Pepper design, the Jubilee style bracelet with killer micro adjust, awesome color, and smokin hot look, I’m an instant fan. My next JM will be the Canton. Thanks for a great review!

      The new Dr. Pepper looks awesome. If I didn't already have the original I'd order it. And even then I'm still tempted. 😂

    You hit the nail on the head I just bought an amazing used Tudor 1926 for 1200. I’ve always been a fan of Jack Mason but this watch is just a little out of the price point. Should be more around 1299, I also wish it would have stayed American made. 😢

    Very exciting release! Great combination of looks, case and movement.
    With regards to the Omega aqua terra - to me the only model on the market that I consider to be a valid alternative to the aqua terra is the fears redcliff with an open case back but it is twice the price of the watch we discuss here. This Canton doesn't cut it to compete with the aqua terra but it competes with many watches in its price rangee.
    For example, it competes with the new Longines conquest 38mm and has few advantages over it like the 20mm lug width, no crown guards, the color matching date wheel on the green dial and the clasp. This watch also challenges monta noble and many other models!
    As a whole in its category I find it an impressive effort!

    Reminds me the most of the Tissot Gentlemen or the Henry Archer Vesterhav, would be interested to see a comparison to those too. I prefer both of those, and they cost a lot less.
    This really meeda a distinct 12 oclock marker too. Imo going swiss made is a mistake, and thats as a non american

      Hydro-timer is a great watch, but I don't think it sold too well for them. Which is ironic, they made it because a lot of people wanted a non-gmt strat-o-timer, but they didn't buy it as much. Meanwhile, the strat-o-timer is doing really well for them.

  • @MementoMorituri

    It looks too much like other watches that I've seen. You mentioned Christopher Ward. I like the Sealander 36mm because it seems like a natural extension of their design language and it knows what it is trying to be, or maybe even what it is trying to be a well-made alternative to. But another one I think I would choose is the Ocean To Orbit Lhotse. Those guys are brand spanking new but the they're focusing on the tool aspect with a few details that the Canton is missing. That and OTO sent the watch up the mountain it is named after to establish some of its adventure cred. If the Canton wants to be the Texas Aqua-Terra it needs a little more flair that is uniquely Texan. At the very least assemble it in the U.S. (Just an opinion)

    As a newer person in the hobby, I've been going back and forth on how important heritage can be as well as the subtle design choices as something that can really affect your experience with a watch. It's hard for me to separate the difference between a watch like this one that takes design cues that theoretically stand on its own as a piece worth having vs a chinese clomage with good specs. As a student, the >1k price difference isn't even something I can quite comprehend and it's getting too close to C tier grail options like the cheapest used GS to seem like it would make sense in my situation.
    Would love to hear your thoughts on the citizen zenshin line!

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  2 місяці тому +2

      Well, History and Heritage is a tricky thing... In some ways, it matters a lot, and in other ways it's just talk and hype. For instance, it's something that can vary between people and is un-quantifiable, so it's impossible to evaluate in terms of value.
      Yet at the same time, once you get over a certain price point, value pretty much goes out the window anyway. The differences in quality get so minute, it's splitting hairs. So at that point, it's really what catches your attention and heart.
      Although as a student, I'd recommend staying on the affordable side of things anyway. You got more important things to spend your money on. So I'd say get a good San Martin watch and maybe look at something like a Casio Oceanus. Amazing watches with quality you wouldn't expect.
      As for the Zenshin... Not a fan of the case, but the dials look great. Need to see one in person though.

    • @t1n670
      @t1n670 2 місяці тому

      @RelativeTime Very true, it's up to each individual how much emphasis they want to put in heritage. It would make sense that a newer enthusiast like me is focused on value for money, specs, and design.
      It seems maturing in the hobby shifts the view away from the material aspect and becomes more about supporting a brand, appreciating and sharing the story behind it, and adopting some of those brand values into your own identity.

    Coffin shaped indices! It looks good to a degree but it's a tricky price point IMO to succeed at as the options widen with some quality options. I think I'd lean more towards Formex or Monta as they have their own X factor, love or hate. Rolex, TAG and home grown CW are a bit too generic for me regarding indices. I like the CW and Omega case and hands but the Mason waffle dial looks great. Polished centre link is a bit too blingy for my British reserve :)

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  2 місяці тому +1

      They are sort of coffin, I think the wings slope back down, and disapear into the dial. At least with the black one. • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  2 місяці тому +2

      That is the question. From a design perspective... not really, but a lot of those watches tend to blend together as well. What they are banking on is the quality helping to set them apart and gaining value that way. Like trying to have Monta level while undercutting them by a few hundred dollars.
      But at the same time, at a certain price point value kind of goes out the window anyway. Like over a 1k or 1.5k, you are really splitting hairs over the quality differences. At that point, it's more about what speaks to you.

    I like it, though I would've preferred a no-date variant if it meant slightly less expensive. The lumed seconds hand is an advantage over the Noble's non-lumed seconds hand IMO.
    However, I'm not a fan of the inconsistent clustered text at the bottom. The italicized "Canton" text looks rather cartoonish and doesn't blend well with the rest of the text. The 12 o-clock index also needs to look a little different for orientation distinction in low light even though there's a partial index by the date window.
    I normally don't buy first versions of anything anymore because of potential improvements in the future, so I hope this model stays in the line up. Hopefully, with a no-date variant even if it's just one color.

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  2 місяці тому

      The case finishing is about on the same level as the Noble. Same with the bracelet. As for the dial, I need to really look at the macro shots a bit more before doing the part 2 video, but right now I'd say they are pretty close. At least ignoring the dust on the prototype... which hopefully doesn't make it into production.
      Now I think the Noble does have a slightly more refined design. Like on the Noble I love the slight chamfer on the inside of the lugs that leads to the chamfer on the bracelet. There are a few things like that. Whereas I think the Canton has a slight advantage with the scratch-resistant coating and a better clasp. Or.. maybe not a better clasp, but I think it's more comfortable and easier to get on and off. Monta's clasp has a really nice refined look, but JM is more functional. Also has a little better lume, but not by much.

    Hey Shane, usually I'm on the same page with you when talking watches. But here I have to disagree wholeheartedly. History/heritage are extremely important for me when I evaluate the value of a watch. Is it all storytelling in the end? Yes. But imagine the US without the myth of the American Dream. The country maybe wouldn't even exist anymore. It is so important to identify - with a country, religion, idea or just a product. Since micros don't have that, they have to adapt by finding the original design, the great specs for the money or the new story that people can relate to. You said it yourself. JM had a real Texas thing going and now, with all the going upmarket is the only way, they've given up on that and are just one of a million non Swiss swiss made. I'm not a fan. Cheers

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  2 місяці тому +1

      Well, history and heritage is important. I wasn't trying to imply that. It's partly why some people love certain watches, like the Speedmaster. But when doing a review and talking value, that's something that's impossible to quantify (everyone likes different brands differently) and not necessarily fair to bring into the equation. That's what I was trying to say.
      So I try to look at things objectively regardless of who making it, and when talking value the only way to do that is to look at the specifics. The tangible things you're getting for the money. Now when you, the individual, are buying something. That's a whole other story, at that point sometimes you have to go with your heart. And realistically, once you get above a certain price point value goes out the window anyway. It's more about what you want, then what's a good deal.

      Now I've looked at plenty of San Martin watches, and even their new brand (whatever it's called, can't remeber). They are some of the best bang for your buck around. So I can say that from a quality stand point.. the fit and finish, movement, bracelet, all that stuff. It's no contest.
      However... sometimes we do need to ask ourselves how good of a watch do we actually need? That I think is the trick with watch collecting these days. Because oftentimes the improvements are things that you don't really notice or really need.

Maybe make the dial a giant Texas Rangers badge, put "Screw You" on the rotor, and on the clasp change the "Be Your Best" text to "We're from Texas".
