Seems they could have cut away or drilled small holes around the desired thickness and saved a ton of sanding. Or scribed around with a Flint flake to get near the thickness they wanted

Wouldn't it be easier to use a 60 grit grinder to make the shell bracelet?

Great question. The Hohokam crafters did score the cap and removed it. They would then turn the piece into a frog decoration. I have done this before and cutting the top off takes about equal time. I think they were using a large agave type knife.
