Toronto was the first line to operate this ICTS system. But Vancouver took the idea and ran with it, and with great success! Congrats Vancouver for making, what could have been in Toronto, work!
Although Toronto was the first to run the ICTS, they chose not to run it "driverless" -- while the trains are automated, there is still an operator on board. So I would say it's fair to call Skytrain the first driverless system. It's too bad Toronto did not take full advantage of the ICTS and use it to build more lines, instead choosing to let it fall into disrepair and treating it as a second class citizen. Vancouver really shows what the technology is capable of if you embrace it.
@@CriminalCaterpillar well, we decided to go with ancient technology for the Canada Line and have it completely separate from SkyTrain just to save a few bucks at the time.

Hi Jack, we have some more trains that are being tested, just like the first 2 that are on the system now. BCRTC needs to go through the necessary steps to ensure all the operation and safety boxes have been checked. Stay tuned! ^ac

Yep! There are two on the system currently, the others are still being tested. I keep seeing them on the opposite direction I'm going! But they are out there :) ^ac
Hi Lane, The Mark IIIs will follow exactly the same speed profile as the Mark II fleet. They accelerate from the station at 1m/s2 (metre per square second) to 80 Km/hr unless there is a curve speed limit. They cruise at 80 Km/hr and brake at 1m/s2 into the station. Average speed overall, allowing for station stops, etc is 44 Km/hr. The sharpest curve is the 70 m radius curve at Main St and there, the trains slow to 40 Km/hr. However, the trains that are tested (not during service) were brought up to speeds of 115 Km/hr to test the emergency braking capability. Thanks for your question! ^ac
They have 2 of these in service now right? Would i be correct to say the most "defining" feature is having all 4 cars joines so one can walk between them? I think i passed one of these coming in the opposite direction as i was leaving waterfront. Thought it looked different from the others
That is a great feature - no more trying to get to a specific car on the platform! I also enjoy the quieter ride, the huge windows and the light up map. ^ac
Looks like it has some of the features of the Canada line cars (continues open walk through and the bike/cart/carriage area as well as the inside display of next stop) and a lot of the mark 2 cars, colour, seats, etc.
That's a trivial change. Like 20$ trivial change. Kids build things like this in high school without needing any fancy parts. It's very 80's technology to build one by hand. Having a factory punch one out is likely cheap enough to do locally. The onboard computer likely just sends a "current station" message to it over an ethernet interface or a serial interface, and it just figures out which LED's to light from there. BCRTC may already have such signs and they just haven't been installed because the Evergreen Line is still months away from opening and it would confuse people to see it on the sign and not have it stop there.
Apparently I was wrong! They do have lights on the map for the evergreen line. They have just covered the lights up with the paper map. Hi Tom, I've got all the numbers for you! A Mark 3 train is 68.1 m long over the couplers (part that connects them. All existing platforms, along with the Evergreen platforms, are 80 m long, with the following exceptions - Main St is 87.5 m, Surrey Central eastbound is 79 m. Canada Line platforms are generally 40 m (extendable to 50 m) except that Waterfront, Vancouver City Centre, Yaletown-Roundhouse, Richmond-Brighouse and YVR-Airport are 50 m. Thanks! ^ac
Less seating on the MKIII is a definite downside, especially on longer trips. There are insufficient hand holds and poor placements for smaller passengers. Nice otherwise, but the MK II is my favorite.

The Canada Line uses traditional electric motors rather than the linear induction motors used on the Expo, Millennium and Evergreen lines. But everything else they describe as new are on the Canada Line.

Two Expo Line trains will run from Waterfront, one will go to King George as per usual and one will curve around and have its terminus station be Production Way-University.
