Live-Edge Walnut Butcher Blocks?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 21 лис 2024
- I took two beautiful English walnut slabs and turned them into 5 butcher blocks. I tried to save as much of the live edge as possible while bookmatching the blocks. During the build I encountered a few cracks and knots that almost put a stop to the build. How do you think they came out?

Hey Kris I made my first cutting board last week and my second today. Your videos were inspiring. Thought I'd let you know.
Happy to hear that @spandexcore!
Wow.....just Wow. I'll never look at a piece of live edge the same after seeing what you can do with it. Your vision is unique, and humbling to us mere mortals. Thank you for showing the whole process.
Fantastic craftsmanship! I stumbled on your channel today for the first time. Looking forward to more videos!
I love working walnut ! Always good surprises and rarely disappointed, these cutting boards are so gorgeous and so inspiring ! Thanx to do this and share it !
Incredible. The care, effort and craftmanship that goes into each piece is amazing.
I love the walnut! I’d say out of all the things in my shop, my lathe is the most relaxing tool I have. Great job matching those! ❤
Tremendous, keep following your instincts, live edge they way you carved it is beautiful, thanks for sharing.
Kris your level of professionalism never ceases to amaze me... Gorgeous blocks by the way
Much appreciated @bigraymie!
These are some of my all time favorite butcher blocks you’ve ever made! Love these so much!
Incredible craftsmanship. Wishing you a very happy and prosperous New Year for 2024.
Wow absolutely stunning love the look of the live edge cutting boards and knives so beautiful
Thank you @jimrosson6702!
I really liked how the end-grain board came out. I make quite a few English Walnut single-plank boards so I'm familiar with the gorgeous dark grain and curly figure. I enjoyed your video...got some ideas! Good job!
You made the RIGHT decision about the grooves in those slabs! They are just absolutely beautiful 😮
You are one hick of a craftsman,I love your shop I was a cabinet makeker for ten years and I know how important the tools are man love what you make keep up the great work!!!!!😗😉😃
Appreciate the kinds words, thank you @renebouchard5827!
Just found your channel. You have a beautiful family and a real gift for creating beautiful things! I expect the hubby to repurpose the garage now.
Everytime I see one of your videos, I think about the garage you came from and what you have now. Your craftsmanship is absolutely off the hook. I hope you got a good deal on those slabs with all the cracks, etc. Still beautiful pieces. You make it look so easy and I know better. A lot of work and time goes into the work you do especially with how meticulous you are. ❤
Much appreciated @stephanie2434! The big shop sure is a long ways from the single car garage. Cheers
Your work just keeps being elevated, which I didn't think was possible. You are a master craftsman in the truest sense of the phrase. Well done, my friend!
Much appreciated @fourpressmedia2674! Thanks for all the support!
Wow Kris!!! Every video you make showcasing a new product is just mind blowing. Never afraid to try new things. You have inspired me since i started watching your videos. Helped me open up a whole new skill set I never knew I had. Thank you for what you do.
Thank you @scottc7875! Happy to help
Kris, I feel that the main attraction of walnut is the grain and the burls rather than a live edge, the straight sides frame the natural beauty of the walnut.
I tend to agree with you and would have ripped straight edges had I been doing it. However, the sapwood in walnut gives a unique and natural 2-tone effect. It was nice to see how it turned out. I definitely would have left the ends straight-cut though.
All good points, its definitely different.
Fantastic! I enjoyed the music and commentary.
Thank you @derekdodson5623!
Beautiful as ever, its all your finishing touches that elevates your work.
Thank you!
Those coin blank logos are awesome. I feel like they match the build quality 🔥🔥🔥
Love this creation, i think you are gonna start a new trend for end grain chopping boards!
It all came together amazing Kris. Thank you for giving me the opportunity of being a part of this 🙏 looking forward to what the future brings us both 🤜💥🤛
I appreciate you man, your knives and work are stunning to say the least! 🙏
Nice surprise to see and upload from your channel. Some nice updates to the shop and business. I think board 3 is my favourite and the knife witg the wooden holder is a must have to go with the board.
Much appreciated @derekrobertson1548! I do love the matching chef knife as well.
This is awesome, really cool idea that I’d like to try. Thanks for the inspiration
Such beautiful products. You make the simplest item so artistic.
Thank you @marywiklander-williams6493!
Looks better after cutting. Beautiful work!💯
Thank you @jeremyhuggins8796!
handcarving was the right call! I was thinking the same thing, also definitely no juicegroove
Kris, breathtaking cutting boards 😮.
Brand new woodworker and have been experimenting with repurposing charcuterie boards as end grain cutting boards. Have had really good luck doing so. Lately I lucked out getting some live edge slabs of oak and walnut from a neighbor who was moving for free. Wasn’t sure what to do with them but this video has got me to thinking. Had never thought about “live”edge cutting boards before.
Thank you for the great videos.
That sounds great, best of luck to ya @ranlove47
They look awesome!
I was skeptical of walnut slabs to cutting boards but these are cool.
I was too! Thank you @siebe41!
What did you ever do about your truck situation!? Love the custom woodwork by the way, please keep making more videos!
Took 6 months to get paid from insurance. Found a used replacement, now I just need to put all my parts back on. Thanks @deathdeny!
Wow khris so much in 1 video. The knives stunning the handles on the knives stunning the board's I I love the concept of these boards just not massive fan of the dark walnut or least not in a board like the countertops u did there still stunning just not my fav. Great see u back we need more videos. 👍🏴
Much appreciated @michaelwillson6847! Hopefully I can knock out a few more videos soon.
@@KrisDeVo be awesome if you could your massive inspiration to what I've started doing, I have a project coming up similar to your counter tops. You create such unique and amazing products one day maybe I'll get close to what u do. 👍🤔🏴
An angle grinder with a sanding flap disc for metalworking is way faster and easier to create or touch up a live edge workpiece. It will give you more control with how you wanted the live edges to look. They're available in any hardware store. I hope this helps.
Stunning work, hard not to love them.
Thank you @scottjohnson2399
OMG your work is flipping awesome keep going😁
Brother!! Your work and craftsmanship are truly amazing. Love the videos and love seeing this side of you. Glad to call you my friend.
GREAT JOB!!
Watching from India. Love what you do with a passion.
Much appreciated @milburncherian5785
You are doing a great job ☺❤Thanks for sharing our shed, Kris.
Thank you for the support @patiowellus! Much appreciated.
Hello Kris! My name is Gary Haines and I live in Aiken SC, I just got done watching this vid, and as you always do you knocked it out of the park, to say the least. When showcasing your knife
I was awestruck at the wooden knife rest that you invented, I was blown away!!! I too make some Knives on occasion, but not so much anymore. I have given up a lot of my crafting due to
health reasons, but enough of that I just would like to copy that rest for a few of my favorites!!!
Thank you @garyhaines6632! Go for it Gary, cheers!
That was a clever idea and you executed it flawlessly. Gosh………I sure do like your shop
Thank you very much!
First time visiting this blog. So wonderful pro work. Enjoyed every second of it.
Happy to hear that, thank you @hassanbazzi3545!
Omg Chris they are fab,you are gifted,Well done.👏👏👏🇨🇮☘️🔨🔨
Much appreciated @verajamieson8020!
Beautiful boards!
Love watching your vids everytime I see you have uploaded I get excited too see what you have been working on 😊
Happy to hear that @JAAAAAACKsLOL!
ALWAYS LOVED THE IDEA OF TRANSLUCENT PIGMENTED EPOXY FILLING THE CHECKS AND VOIDS . A SIMPLE BUTTERFLY REPAIR FOR THE CRACKS FORMED BY DRYING WERX FER ME .
Great video Chris! I enjoyed the voice over, and have really enjoyed seeing your videos! This was an epic adventure with the live slabs and the way you kept the look of the natural ebs and flows of the wood was incredible. Keep up the good work brother!
Appreciate the kind words @jonathangrider001! Thank you
Good call on not adding the juice groove. Beautiful work, Kris!
Thank you @lindewoodworking!
The walnut live edge cutting boards were sensational. Your woodworking has taken cutting boards to a new level!
Thank you for the kind words and support @djecklebarger!
awesome!
Thanks dude! @BMSculptures
Kris- beautiful as always. I would think that the amount of labor that you put into the build, the costly material that you work with paired with the shipping to get it to you in the first place, makes the resultant price point out of range for the casual observer. But then again, your videos probably increase the demand and bring buyers with deeper pockets to help you continue your craft!
Impressive effort and end product!
But where are your calipers when turning the dowels to plug into your boards-you’ve got ever other tool known to man😆?
I think you pretty much nailed that one!
I have a few sets of calipers including a calibrated eye 😜
Much appreciated @howarddodson3510!
I like the voiceover. They came out great. Keep up the good work and have a wonderful summer.👍
Much appreciated @dennishinkle5010!
Beautiful and unique. Well done ‼️
Thank you @bstewartexecutivecarcare3797!
Absolutely fantastic Kris. Those look awesome 💯🔥
Glad you liked it @nathanswoodcrafts!
Maybe someday I will be able to acquire one of your pieces of art!
Much appreciated @HarryVonhoene!
I did this about 3 years ago. Didnt do bookmatch, but a maple and black walnut mixed, end grain, live edge cutting board. One of the coolest board I made. I had never seen anything like it either.
Very interesting @kalibbybee4764!
Absolutely WOW! Beautiful work, amazing craftsmanship! Thanks for sharing your time and talent!
Much appreciated @derekpeterson5123!
Absolutely beautiful! Anyone who has watched this video knows that you went to great lengths to keep the live edge alive on each block.
Unfortunately the untrained woodworker will swear that the live edge is fake, and was created using a grinder.
I know better and admire your persistence to work thru the issues that came along. A job well done.
Much appreciated Charles, thank you @charlesslack8090!
What do you mean by you had to stabilize the wood for the knife handle? What I’d that process for/like?
Saturating the wood with resin, check out the previous video. I show the whole process there.
Those are your best work yet. I absolutely love them. And the matching knife and knife stand make for the perfect combo. Great job.
Glad you like them, thank you @terryford9837!
Very professional as always thanks.
Much appreciated @HectorGarcia-eh9jk
Stunning work as always Kris, can I just suggest using a weight lifters belt when your lifting the slabs around mate.. :)
Might have to at some point, thanks @redzed40!
I was skeptical until you brought out the grinder to soften and meld the edges. They came great. I prefer the boards with the softer edges but that a matter of taste. I was concerned that the edge grain would take in so much oil that the grain would be hidden (I had that experience) but glad to see that did not happen. I get similar grain patterns using ash. Do you think you can get the process down to produce these profitably in quantities or was this a one time thing?
Much appreciated @oldmanlifter1. It would be hard to make these profitable because each slab is so unique. Just a one time deal. Cheers
Hi yesser really cooll but i have a suggestions for u ,more thin and with the groove around for the liquids ,that is what i have and i really enjoys thoses particularities..and more thin because it is easyer to cut not too high..👍just saying 👋
I do make those as well.
You really do make some beautiful wooden creations!
Thank you very much!
Your work is always on point thanks for inspiring me to try new techniques
Much appreciated @bradleytuckwell4881!
Looks fantastic!!! So nice I couldn't bring myself to use it. Do people actually use these or are they more for decorative/conversational peices?
Thank you @ericbostic5676! I would say its 50/50 on who uses them.
Hey Chris I'd like to say what a great job u do and the craftsmanship of each board u make is always satisfying to watch, and i just love the knives you have with these boards
Much appreciated @garycook7072!
I disnt like the live edge. But I loved the grain design. Thanks for your videos. I've been woodworking as a hobby for years and started selling my work last year, and I started posting some of my work. Thank-you for sharing
Cool, thanks!
Magic Kris. Thank you.
Thank you @judithmckenzie8979
Absolutely fabulous. Thank you for walking us through all the different parts of a tree and how you select and work through issues. The finished products are unique! These videos are like a master class in woodworking. Appreciate you taking us along on the journey.
Glad you enjoyed it, thank you @adamcox6291!
I really need to hand it to you brother. Those looked way cooler than I thought they would at the beginning of the video. Doing the custom blade and handles with the stand... just 😘muah! Magnificent.
I was pretty worried too! Thank you @mm2pitsnipe72!
Look ,you are a master at your craft. I don't know why the UA-cam algorithm isn't sending me your videos. I've been watching you, since you were in your garage. I will just look for your videos myself. Keep up the amazing work !
Much appreciated @thehawkc!
Love these!!! Very cool
Happy to hear that, thank you @Offsauce!
I have used open end wrenches to help get the size turn down I'm looking for.
Really nice, one thing I am wondering is how much movement it will do being one piece across.
Fantastic workmanship! Love it! The new laser tool is nice too!
Thank you @rjaquaponics9266! I love the new laser too!
great craftsmanship
Beautiful work as always.
Thank you @tiagoribeiro9908!
Was wondering where you were. Beautiful. Unrelated: How big is your shop? I'm moving to Florida and I am building my new shop and not settled on the overall size. Just curious. Thanks Kris.
Eagle River, Alaska. 2000 sq ft
Kris, it's been amazing watching your journey over these past few years! Keep up the Great Work, God Bless you Kris, you a true inspiration to us Newbies and Not so New : )
Much appreciated @carolynw5621!
Amazing and incredible work as always!! You should be immensely proud of all of your hard work. Hope all is well, take care
Much appreciated @peterdnreynolds777!
Beautiful work as always!
Much appreciated @TailEndCustoms!
very clean and nice
Thank you!
Absolutely beautiful glad to see a video from you take care.
BOOM! Nice stuff, Kris 👍👍
The cutting boards are spectacular but I want more info on the magnetic knife holder at the end!
The work with the plugs are epic!!! And omg she’s getting so tall!!!!
Love the videos. How did you magnetise the knife block?
beauty work as always Kris. I've recently started recessing my feet about 1/8" on the bottoms of the boards - using a drill press stop to ensure consistent depth. What do you think of the recessed feet, practically and aesthetically speaking, is it something you'd consider for specific boards? cheers from Newfoundland
This one was a little different with the voice overs. Should I skip that and stick to the music and ASMR?
I personally prefer the voice over but either way works.
Personally would rather hear you talk .
Happy to hear that Nathan, thank you.
Thank you Lynette.
Your voice is an integral part of these videos.😁 P.S. Good call on the omission of juice grooves.
Once is good, your thoughts help. Beautiful work. Love the boards.
That spark at about 3:55 threw me a bit as well. Those boards came out AMAZING and I don't even like the all walnut and thought they're superb. I love the chaos boards so much. Congrats on an awesome build!
Voice over was fine, please no ASMR, liked music as well.
Now I gotta go knife shopping... Easier to mail them to Juneau after all.
I was wondering if someone caught that! Had to have been in the slab. Appreciate the kind words and feedback. I have a few chaotic knives coming up in the next couple days. Juneau sound nice, cheers Doug
I think they look great! Sometimes you have to go against the grain, haha! Love the creativity!
Thats true, thanks Mike!
It's not something I would choose, but I admire the craftsmanship! The pattern reminds me of something nsfw (and youtube comments..), I can't unsee it haha. The knifes, man, they look freaking amazing!
Haha!! Thank you @Emanuel-jr2ii!
Gorgeous!!!
Thank you!!
Absolutely stunning! 👍👍❤️
Thank you @davids8493!
Gorgeous ❤. Love them all
Thank you @stephanielee6929!
These are really beautiful. So glad you didn’t do the juice grooves, although I do miss the live edge.
Thank you @barstad-9591!
Just amazing!
Much appreciated!
