      David, I agree with you 100%. Joseph Cutshall is such an excellent instructor! He has taken the time to explain every detail including the chords behind the lead riffs. The C#m beginning chord is the relative minor chord of the song's native key of E Major. I first learned rhythm guitar and progressed to lead using diads and triads, based upon pieces of barre chords. Joseph's chord based teaching format completely unlocked the fretboard for this song for me!!! Joseph so astutely pointed out that the use of the electric guitar in contemporary worship music does not embrace a rhythm playing style (which is carried by keys and drums, but rather is built on arpeggio styled leads, which are based upon the foundation chords.

    Thank you I cant tell you how helpful this was. Not only the technical aspect but also explaining some philosophy of contemporary worship music as I'm new to playing worship music with a team so it was great insight and explains some of the expectations. Very beautiful voice BTW, and a nicely done video. God Bless.

    Good Tutorial Joseph....in some spots in the beginning portion, it was a bit harder to decipher just where you were in the song cause that first section starting with the C#m did not sound like the intro since the second chord in the intro is an E, and you played an F#m, then a G#m, then went into the A and B. Good in the fact that you didn't run through it like a freight train, like TOO many other "tutorials" I've seen in general. Also I agree with you on the Octaves. Luckily I have a Boss ME-70 pedal board that has an "octave" module on the Modulation pedal. We're doing this song this Sunday! The WL will play an AG. I'm gonna subscribe! Thanks. ONE suggestion----you might want to put the pedal board in front of you on future vids. When you boil it down, CCM EG playing isn't that difficult, and as you said, a lot of it is based on 3-string interior chords and triads, and some arpeggio's, and some riffs/fills at times. I MIGHT even use an E-Bow in some verses! Bless you, brother.

    Hi 😅Joseph great in depth dive I had just a couple things i hear that you may want to try
    On the course where you are doing b string 5 g string 4 just use bottom two strings open
    And in the e at the end of each phrase before verse in stead on the high e try doing a harmonic chime of a string 7 bottom b e e chime 12th fret and let them ring with the keyboard that plays the same thing
    I find those couple little things enhancing thanks for sharing your talent with other jammin jack yarborough here blessings

    I would agree about the portion of the band handling rhythm, in a song like this one. But when you get into something like 1,000 Tongues by Elevation I would think of keys and acoustic as a pretty poor substitute for what an electric can do rhythmically. Anyway, art expresses itself in many ways :-)

  • @joshfulmer3689

    The song has always reminded me of Notion by kings of leon. For the course if I was the 2nd guitar player I'd probably play variation chords that didn't have the bass note in it.

    Love this man! Love the tone as well. Seems like you use the neck pickup throughout the entire song. It really cuts through well. Do you use that pick up a lot on this guitar?

    • @cutshallmusic
      @cutshallmusic  3 роки тому

      Thanks! Yes, in general I prefer the neck pickup on most electrics including the les Paul.

    • @mitchthomas42890
      @mitchthomas42890 3 роки тому

      @@cutshallmusic That's awesome. Yeah a lot of times in worship the bridge pick up gets the most love, but I'm like you, I think the neck pick up, as long as it cuts through enough, it sounds more full for lead and rhythm. Appreciate the lesson!

    • @cutshallmusic
      @cutshallmusic  3 роки тому +1

      @@mitchthomas42890 I find that taming the "mud" from overdrive is less about adding high/mid tone and more about tuning the right amount of low end in the pedal and in the amp. If the amp has a ton of low end in the clean tone, you tend to lose definition of the drive tone as the pedal and amp add harmonics. Secondly, I'm a minimalist when it comes to gain. The more you add, the harder it is for the sound to cut through the mix, so I try to find the sweet spot with my pedals where it's adding a little dirt and compression, but I can still articulate and "push" parts like solos. Lastly, I'd say running a compressor in your chain and using mid-focused drives can also help with making the tone cut through the mix, even with the neck pickup. Hope that helps!

    • @mitchthomas42890
      @mitchthomas42890 3 роки тому

      @@cutshallmusic Thanks man!

    • @mitchthomas42890
      @mitchthomas42890 3 роки тому

      @@cutshallmusic appreciate the input! So when you dial your tone in to the neck pickup, you cut a lot of the bass in general? That makes sense what you said with a clean tone being too bassy it's only going to get more muffled as you add more on top of it. Do you ever really switch between pickups or do you typically just leave it on the neck pickup for everything in the worship setting? (Lead/Rhythm) yeah the Les Paul in your video sounds awesome 👍

    Hey, very good tutorial!! Try the solo with different strings, for example, instead of starting it on the 9th fret of the D string with the 12th fret of the B string, go 14th fret of the A string with 16th fret of the G string. I tried it out and it was a lot easier to do the slides.

    I listened to this solo so many times... I can't see how he's doing that last part by playing the octaves, he's got to be using single notes with an octave pedal for the whole solo.

    • @williamnichols6253
      @williamnichols6253 2 роки тому

      I was wrong, it can be done like this, it's just not easy:

    • @williamnichols6253
      @williamnichols6253 2 роки тому

      doing the octaves on A and G using first and third finger, and on the transitions to the D and B strings at the end using second and fourth fingers. Only way I can see it being possible to sound both sets of octaves without cheating it somehow.

    • @cutshallmusic
      @cutshallmusic  2 роки тому

      I think it’s totally possible that he’s blending in either an octave pedal or that they just doubled the part an octave up in the track. The ehx POG was huge when this album was released in ‘06. I just played it that way because every other tutorial I found on this song (admittedly this was like 10 years ago) said the solo was single notes and my ear kept telling me it was octaves. I agree that playing it as octaves is possible but takes some serious finger coordination. I can’t say I’ve ever “nailed” that part live…
