bananagrams is a good one i play with friends while waiting for dinner while out
in the same vein as a deck of cards, i would say you cant go wrong with chess, draughts and backgammon (and maybe chuck in a cribbage board).
That's true, a large percentage of your crowd will jump right into things like chess/checkers/etc. And then those people might appreciate the variety as time goes on, or the may just love sticking with the classics. Thanks for the thoughts!
