WHO I AM
Hello, I'm Jen Campbell. I'm an award-winning poet and bestselling author of twelve books, spanning short stories, poetry, picture books, and nonfiction.
My books for adults include The Beginning of the World in the Middle of the Night, The Girl Aquarium, The Bookshop Book, and The Sunday Times bestselling Weird Things Customers Say in Bookshops series. My picture book trilogy Franklin and Luna, and my middle-grade book The Sister Who Ate Her Brothers, are published by Thames & Hudson. I've won both an Eric Gregory Award and the Jane Martin Poetry Prize, and my books have been translated into twenty languages.
I've worked in the publishing industry for over fifteen years, initially as a bookseller, and now as a freelance editor, content creator and disability advocate. I review books online, in print and on the radio. I run a UA-cam channel where I talk about books, the history of fairy tales, and the representation of disability and disfigurement. I also offer online writing workshops and editorial services, give talks at schools, publishing companies, universities and book festivals on a variety of topics, and I run a book club for TOAST clothing.

My brother likes horror books, Marvel Universe, and he has had heart surgery and is a 2 times cancer survivor, he also has a dark sense of humor sometimes and is a sarcastic man but at the same time he can be thoughtful and a caring man.
My niece loves growing flower and has many houseplants, she is a stay at home and has a child with disabilities and she is always positive and smiling. She used to get bullied as a kid a lot for wearing thick reading glasses. She loves rainbows also and of course reading.
My mother is in her late 60s, cannot read long books because of her short attention span and loved "The Red Notebook" by Antoine Laurain.
My father likes coffee table books- lots of beautiful pictures, etc. He likes humor, non-fiction books

I am a longtime follower but this is my first time commenting!! You are wonderful 😃 Thanks for all you do.
I’m looking for a book for myself (hey, why not get myself an early Christmas gift 🎁 😃) that is a contemporary queer-themed book about a person simply navigating life. More specifically, not something either tragic/awful or where everything works out perfectly in the end…rather, what I’m interested in more is the middle ground.
Navigating challenges with family is of particular interest, but simply life in general is good too (e.g., relationships, friends, work etc.).
Examples in this vein that I’ve loved are Love In The Big City, Exciting Times, and An Exciting and Vivid Inner Life. I also enjoyed Real Life.
Hopefully that makes sense! I struggle to find books like this so would really appreciate any recs!! Thank you so much!!

Great video, Jen! I added a couple of books to my wish list, like Chlorine and The House Opposite, to pick up on my trip across the pond in December! Yay! I’m finally coming back to London! I’ll be going to see Hamnet the play while I’m there too. And a day or overnight trip to Bath to go to Persephone! I couldn’t be more excited! Of course, I will be packing my extra suitcase for all the books that I know I’ll be bringing back. 😉

A book for people wanting a father/son tale would be Featherhood by Charlie Gilmour. Nonfiction about a father and son bonding over rehabilitating a wild bird.

Brilliant collection of suggestions Jen! I am reading something that feels like a warm hug and you mentioned previously that you were interested. It’s The Fortnight in September. I’m about half through it at present. There is no plot really, it just recounts the experiences of the family on their annual trip to Bognor. It’s funny and very accurately portrays family dynamics to me. It’s set around 1930 and has that nostalgic quality that you mentioned too. Happy reading all!

Sooner or Later Everything Falls into the Sea by Sarah Pinkster is a very good short story collection with at least one story set on space ship(s).
I would love some more recommendations of cosy heartwarming books. I have absolutely loved the Tea Dragon Society, Memphis and At the Pond. So, I think the common themes that make them cosy to me are warm interpersonal relationships and nature. Thank you so much! Love your videos!!

Yes, Chlorine! I'm reading it now, I tried to restrict it to reading by the pool and it is really interesting. I recommend it so far, I have only 30 pages left and I'm hooked.

Dear Santa/Jen, I would love a book for Christmas for my dad (he’s always the hardest to buy for!). He doesn’t read often, partly because I think he hasn’t been able to find much that works for him. His favourite book is Bunnyman by Will Sargent, and he generally loves 80s music memoirs (bonus points for alternative/post punk). He’s also an avid cyclist and loves anything non fiction about going behind the scenes of races/history etc. Sports wise he also reads things about rugby and golf. He’s also recently enjoyed Bob Mortimers memoir and fiction book, too. If non of that is helpful, he also loves maths/puzzles and all that good stuff. Any and all suggestions welcome, I am quickly running out over the years 😂💜

Love these videos. Revenge sounds great, hadn't heard of that. I just read The Subtweet and really enjoyed it, I think a lot of books about internet culture etc can feel a bit tedious and this one was actually thoughtful and funny.
I have a recommendation request :-) my partner likes thrillers and is also a big history nerd. He really enjoyed the Shardlake series. His favourite modern thriller writer is Claire Douglas. He tends to get bored of other writers' thrillers after 2-3 of their books because the writing isn't great. So my request is for thrillers you think have great writing, not essential but bonus if they're not contemporary
To the person asking for lesbians in space - consider the work of Becky Chambers, particularly the Wayfarer series. She always includes a lot of queer/gender diverse characters in her uplifting sci-fi stories.

I don't know if you read graphic novels but having recently read and fallen in love with Heartstopper, I would love to hear about a gender swapped version!
For non-human narrators, I can recommend Walking Practice by Dolki Min which is about an alien using dating apps to find victims to slaughter for food!
To add on to recs for “lesbians in space”, I would recommend The Vanished Birds by Simon Jimenez - it doesn’t exactly fit the prompt, but it’s a space opera with a lot of queer rep :)

Jen, I love these book recommendations videos. Unrelated query: you have described yourself as a queer person in several videos. I suspect my confusion is related to my age (73), but my curiosity is piqued every time. If you have elaborated on this in a former video can you point me to it? I’m bisexual, I often use the word queer instead. Either is fine for me ☺️
