    Long-term survivor for over 35+ years, seems like every few years some big announcement is made about a possible cure for HIV, but then it's always couched in a "possible approach to a cure" but few have gotten out of the lab. It's very encouraging to see this new promising approach. It makes sense, and the initial (tiny) results seems promising. I used to do study after study at the NIH, but have been frustrated that LTSs over 50 are generally excluded from studies. I hope that make an exception for next studies.

      What are the daily side effects you feel being hiv positive?

    • @creech444
      @creech444 Рік тому +10

      @@theancientsancients1769 There seems to be a number of "aggravations" mind fog, lack of energy. There's a number of things that are natural aging issues, that seem to be aggravated by HIV like diabetes, HBP, skin cancer. Nothing that is overwhelming but still there, I seem to have an "event" every 3-4 years of some immune related issue that takes me to the hospital for treatment and resolution. I'm now in my mid-60s and still working, still active. I've been HIV+ for over 35 years from back when it was GRID, and no one knew what caused it, there was no testing, and long years with no real treatment. I had a partner that passed away, we were roughly in the same boat as far as blood work numbers, but with each new drug it was just a little late for him or he couldn't tolerate it, but for me it was just in time. I did a number of NIH studies early on and made sure to get in all the studies I could. My partner passed as well as over half my friends, those were devastating times. When my partner died I was told to write my will, and get things in order. But then a new drug came along, then when I needed it another, and another. But there was a good 10-15 years where I only had a year or two to live. So as a long-term survivor that really interferes with long-term planning, career goals, retirement plans. It was all about surviving. Now that I'm in my 60s, there's less support for LTSs, there's even less focus on it by the LGBT community, seems everyone has pretty much moved on. It feels like HIV is sort of on the back burner. But I lived through the worst of it, have suffered with PTSD, survivors guilt, you name it. I did a support group for LTSs and there wasn't a huge interest, most LTSs had settled down and moved out to the suburbs, I was told "just let it go, there's pills for it now." So the mental cost has been high. I'm also a writer and poet and that community is very supportive, but no one sees to want to hear "Another downer AIDS poem." All that said though, if even in my 70s, even if I'm old and infirmed--if there was a cure. It would be amazing! It would be such a weight off. It feels often like the plan for "curing" AIDS is just to stop infections and then let the old infected queens die off. But I think I would cry for weeks, there's been this long war so many of us have fought for decades now, and it never ended it just sort of petered out without a real resolution. If there was a cure, I think I could properly mourn all the friends and loved ones we lost. I'd also be able to say I'd seen the whole thing, from the scary early days to the long stalemate, to the cure. What a thing to have survived.

    Raif - i haven't seen one of your videos since you started your blogs. I'm so very happy to see you in such a good headspace and doing such positive work. I'm 23 years down the line with ART therapy and everything is incredibly good for me - an effective cure has always been a pipe dream ... now a little closer. More detail as the trials progress will be fascinating- especially if the gene therapy has the ability to activate & clear the 'hidden' reservoirs of virus which remain hidden from the immune system - this has always been the failure point of previous attempts at cures - so finger's crossed. Everytime i hear such wonders my thoughts fall to the hundreds of fellow men & boys - brothers - who died so horribly in the 80's & 90's when i was a young man.... a heartbreak that can never be forgotten.
    Raif, seeing the strong & positive man you've become and obviously a source of both information & strength for your generation brings joy to my heart. Well done mate, from an Australian poz fellow traveller!

And I do value the old school vlog-style videos too so i want to find space for that as well. But yes, definitely leaning into these podcast-like interviews...so many incredible people out there with a wealth of knowledge, experience, stories etc. Regarding the cure, i think it will come in steps....an early cure will probably be a 'functional cure' where a person can stop taking ARVs but the person remains undetectable with reservoirs still in tact. And then the next goal would be to target and eliminate reservoirs too.

      @@RaifDerrazi it's very exciting Raif ... the first promise of a cure in my 23 years of being poz which actually sounds solid. Even though we don't like to think about - even with well controlled & Undetectable viral load - we're still at risk of little nasties. My partner had & was 'cured' of rectal cancer - to have a functional HIV cure would be would be wonderful and lessen the possibility such 'nasties' affecting. Yet, Raif, my mind keeps thinking of the many friends and thousands of other beautiful souls we lost before ART.
      And again - I believe your honesty, bravery has helped many of your generation to get through & survive the initial horror and fear of discovering they've become positive - keep up the brilliant work you do; you're an inspiration Sir!

      Hopefully, it will be accessible to everyone and not just for a select few. Like the rich or the family members of those in the medical, political, or financial professions. Greed always overlooks those who have no voice to represent or to protect them. Free always comes with a price tag. These scoundrels are here for the money. It is never to save ALL lives, but only those who can afford it. It is all they know. We see it and hear it in the news. I am not holding my breath for a miracle just to be told no. And, I will not apologize that I see the world for what it is.

      Jesus definitely wants ALL people with HIV free from it, he was sent to destroy the works of the devil & one of those works is to oppress people for years and thread them along like puppets and keep them orchestrated how he wants them… he does this by afflicting disease because if they sin in some way, he believes he has a legal (think courtroom) right to hurt people and he goes in and does so. This is why Christians speak so much about sin, repentance and the gospel because the Gospel is what not only saves, but it’s where the power to shift things comes from… one of those,”things” being the cells of your body. The Holy Spirit created all things, even cells & has a vastly long array of understanding (not just knowledge, but wisdom & application of wisdom) when it comes to years and years of issues like this. He has the understanding of what causes hiv to replicate in each persons body,irrespective of blood type and background, but also how to counter that virus replication in a safe way.
      Without discounting what Mr. Falcon and his team are doing, if a person is spiritually dead, them being able to choose if they want their immune system recreated or not… to me, sounds like a fair trade if they are willing to have their transgressions pardoned and live their life for Christ (and no longer for themselves)… like if Christ gave them not only a pass with HIV, but also an eternal pass, I believe they should live for him because he is going out of his way to show them he wants them free from that oppression. He not only wants them free from the oppression, he wants to be their friend & backed up his talk on the cross. Idk what else they would want, but if whatever behavior got them into the mess is being pardoned (example someone touching a hot stove and thankfully isn’t burned) then that relief should yield some kind of gratitude and if drastic enough servitude… if Jesus says jump, they should do a shoe shuffle dance, toe step and backflip to figure out how high.
      Just for clarity and to summarize not only my position but a broader talking point, people that do other things like hard drugs, adultery, have committed sex outside of marriage (alternative or traditionally speaking), liars, people who make up their own God, etc etc all have fallen short of Gods best & since that causes a blemish, they have to pay for that… that blemish is sin & it renders death… he longs to be fair and offer mercy, but we would need to accept it & all those who somehow got HIV, then receiving a cure would be mercy & they should honor God, in my opinion, accordingly…. How they express that is between them and God that’s none of my business, but if they are open to it, I hope they allow Jesus into their lives & not only get their cure and full restoration of health, but also eternal life

    Such amazing news. I lost many friends back in the 80's and 90's, so I pray it will work long term. I saw that Randy Ray recently passed away. He was the last of 3 brothers that contracted HIV via factor 8 as children. Back in the 80's someone burned their house to the ground because of their diagnosis. His two younger brothers passed away many years ago. Randy was only 43 and they really didn't say what he died of... they just said his health declined in the past few months. Hearing this news made me fearful that perhaps the medications stopped working for him or something. Does this happen? I supposed he could have died of something different altogether, but if that was the case why would they not have said so I wonder? We lost so many wonderful people to this disease, I sure hope they can eradicate it once and for all.

      About 18,000 people died of aids in 2020. Yes that’s much less than the peak of 50,000 in 1995, but it’s still a lot. Media doesn’t tell you about the people the drugs aren’t helping. And even suppressing HIV to undetectable does not necessarily restore your T cell count

      ,I really appreciate you making this video. My ex of 7 years cheated and gave me HIV during our relationship and I was devastated. You've made me feel so much better Dr.ubarlo and seeing all these people share their testimonies about your cure,

    I cant recall the company name but they were looking for volunteers for a new HIV med. They also do diabetic medication testing and others for sleep and psych issues. Its in Orlando, they have ads up for volunteers and its also paid. I read some od the research, its very interesting
