Just realized you guys have the same windless we have!! We are really curious to try in "action". Do you like it? Ohh and Marocco was one of the best food I have ever eat!! Duca
@@RiggingDoctor Everyone keep telling us to get an electric one but I won't do it before at least trying to get used to the one we already have for a little while. After that I might change my mind. hehehehehe
My big concern with electric windless is they can’t pull the boat up to the anchor. If there is a lot of wind and waves, you have to use the motor to help it and then they can still overheat under heavy use. This manual windlass has pulled the boat all the way up to the anchor in 35 knots of wind. It was really hard work and really slow but it did it never complained! On another occasion, our anchor chain fouled an old mooring anchor that was covered in anchors. The windlass pulled the whole assembly up to boat and allowed us to free our chain from the monstrosity. The mooring anchor has to be a few hundred pounds and the only reason we were able to save our anchor was because of this windlass. If you keep it greased, it will always work and that is an incredible safety feature that you won’t find on an electric windlass!
I hope you both are doing well and being safe. Austria is a gorgeous country! Give the lockdown a few weeks and hopefully we should start to see some improvements and possibly limited border openings.
Thank you for another amazing video and taking us along for the ride! A word popped into my head as I watched you sail into Africa - Brave!. It takes guts to live your dreams and carry them out and you both are doing it!! And we get to watch. You guys are awesome! Can't wait to see Africa.
I enjoyed watching the video, but kept thinking about you two "trapped" in Austria the whole time. I hope you're doing well and able to ward off the boredom from having to stay put. Seems everyone's plans and activities have come to a screeching halt and on hold the world over. I'm looking forward to your next video as you explore Morocco. That's one place I haven't been to, but I have been to ports and shipyards in West Africa and East Africa as a Port Engineer. I've also sailed in and out of ports in South Africa back in 1982. Those were all interesting experiences and have provided me with some great "sea stories."😀
Back in the early 80's I spent a lot of time all around Valencia (absolutely loved Benidorm) and down to Gibraltar. Made a few trips to Morocco... Tangier was pretty cool, Rabat just because and Casablanca. I mean How can you not go to Casablanca when your that close.
What happened to seeing 23 countries in 6 days? Great sail to Africa and no problems. Good to hear you like the transponder, and feel safe with it. Now time for new food, oh yes.
Thames Street Oysters will be here waiting for you! lol I have been to most of the places you are visiting (by air) and I have enjoyed this walk down memory lane while self quarantining. Plus you are a B-more couple. Love, love, love.
I thoroughly enjoyed this video, as I do all of your videos. I'm hoping to see an update soon as to your status in real time. Take care my sweet friends...
We are safe and warm in a house and there is an oven so I have been baking :) If you check out the stories on the UA-cam app on your phone you can see some of the things we have baked!
More sailing, yeah! Herby gets sick on the water, LOLOLOL! Can hardley believe it! Loved the slow sail and the sunset! The coastal lights at night, I miss that myself! Looks like a great marina and the food looked delicious. So what dish were you eating? And the name of the Marina for my log book! Hey, that's an idea for when you do get back to the boat, sharing someognook entries. Just a thought. Loved the video and the scene! Thanks for sharing!😁👍
Hope You are doing fine-in Austria! Like Your calm approach to sailing. Are You never charged up? Marine traffic shows a spot as a place to anchor in the middle of Atlantic -Banco del Hoyo, with a depth of 16-22 meters!
That might be the area we sailed through! We never know how much power we will need in the next port so we try to use as little as possible on the way so that we will have plenty of charge when we get there.
It’s attached directly to the shank with a shackle (no swivel, but I plan on getting a swivel soon). The anchor is too big for the bow so it pulls up alongside the chain stopper and is tied in place with Dyneema. To launch the anchor, I simply untie it and let it roll out of the bow roller.
Being anchored there for a few weeks and having the boat spin around with the current hock led the shackle. That’s actually why I want to put a swivel on it.
Thanks for the recommendation. Swivels are the weak point in an anchor rode and I didn’t have one to avoid said weakness. Hockling the shackle can snap something and is much more likely to happen than the rare swivel failure! I’ll see about getting a Mantus one!
Yeah, that’s why Maddie was talking about Halloween. From there we sailed to Gibraltar, into the Mediterranean, and went on a little road trip as far as Austria when the virus hit. We are editing the videos but they only go public once a week.
I usually buy them in a previous port so that I have the flag already when I arrive; I just wasn’t able to get the Morocco flag in Spain. When we left the US we had flags for the Bahamas, Bermuda, and Portugal (Azores). When we left Portugal we had flags for Spain. When we stopped in Gibraltar, we bought flags for the next several countries we will be visiting.
I thought that boats build before 1985 are normally exempt from VAT ? Can someone confirm? And Gibraltar, the Channel Islands, Isle of Man are in EU territory but not a part of the EU and its tax system.
Yes and no. If the boat existed “in EU waters” before 1985, then it is exempt. But if it leaves for two years, it looses the VAT paid status and owes it again. Also, a boat that paid VAT that leaves for two years will owe VAT again upon return to the EU. It’s a very efficient money grab!
This video was filmed in October (but of a delay between filming and publishing). The boat is currently in Spain and we are trapped in Austria! You can see it in action here: ua-cam.com/video/dPhW-bSXBrQ/v-deo.html
I can’t imagine how awful it is to get food poisoning while you’re sailing. Ugh. I wonder what it’s like to look back at this when you’re editing later and forced to remember it! Know you are now trapped in Austria...hope you stay safe
It’s actually really fun to relive these experiences through editing. The bad times are especially interesting because it’s something that I know we overcame. There have only been a few moments during our travels that were very difficult to relive and release to the public.
Too bad no one will buy an ocean crossed boat for at least 100k! If that were the case, I would start crossing oceans on every boat yard Freebie out there 😂🤣
Slippery Elm Bark Powder is a great remedy for any and all digestive related conditions. Not only that - it is a whole herb grown in Nature; has no side effects and it doesn't even taste bad - kind of like a mild maple syrup.
