I just got into Sycamore myself and it has been an absolute eye opener! I had heard it doesn't split well by hand when green and that is sure the case. Love cutting it though. Good video! Will be back to see it split. New Sub here!
Thats a nice size saw, would be awesome to win!! The sycamore is some of the most different wood that we have in the USA. Makes some unique lumber if let set for a year and then quartersawn! Can be beautiful!
That’s a good saw! Not so hot on Sycamore for Firewood, splitting it, or burning it. But I had a custom knife made and the guy recommended Sycamore for the handle scales. It turned out beautiful. So hopefully Sam gets the same results when he saws those boards up. 😊
One person’s throw away is another person’s treasure . Nice score with the MS 310 , last summer my neighbor gave me a Ms 170 , I had to replace the carburetor, spark plug, air filter, and chain. I will have to replace the bar as well but it runs great now.
I just sold my MS170 after 3 years. That was easily the most temperamental saw I’ve ever owned. When it was running well, it did great for what it was. On the bad days I wanted to drop it off at the scrapyard. Good luck with yours. I’ve heard a lot of mixed reviews.
I have a 310 also, cuts great! i put a 20" bar on and running an RS full chisel .325 chain (26rs81). The saw doesn't have to work as hard with the narrower chain then a 3/8's chain.
The way I like to use to get firewood out of the big gnarly pieces like yours, is to trim em; slab em, and rip em into sticks. somewhat time consuming, but nobody says you have to do it all at once, lol. You end up with nice, square pieces that are eminently stackable- instead of ugly, shreddy goofy shaped pieces, and big chunky knot monstrosities. That stuff doesn't stack worth a crap, often doesn't fit in smaller burners, and looks like junk to potential customers. I COULD just do as Nebraska Mike does, and roll it into a ditch and forget about it, as not worth the effort. BUT that's often the best wood in the tree! Dense, heavy, and it burns forever. Big Ash crotches are horrible to split- the grain just runs every which way- but it's rock hard wood, and it pains me to just leave it to rot... So I use this method, and get excellent firewood out of it, without beating myself half to death. Probably work even better with that Sycamore. That stuff can be stringy, nasty, and really not fun to split green- and thats the strait pieces! It's in the same class as Cottonwood, sweet gum, and Elm- Satan wood. Dead and dried out, its a lot easier.
Finally got snow here. About time… Ground needs to freeze now. I’m going to start using some kind of ring on my belt to hold my acc-u-mark. I’ve lost/broken a few. I have to paint mine yellow ‘cause I’m partially colorblind and I can’t see them if they fall in the weeds 😂
Chuck hated splitting that stuff he said it was very stringy wood. I think Im right. He didn't get much of that kind of wood into split.Great video and Take Care Scheib.
Looks like the 310 is running great. Thats what my brother runs. Sycamore is great to fill ditches🤣 You will have loads of fun splitting that. Take care Don👊🏻🍻🇺🇸
Sycamore isn't the best for firewood, but it will burn decent when mixed in with some good stuff. Nice find with the saw, you're gonna make someone very happy with that one. See ya soon brother 🍻✌️🇺🇸🤘
Nice generous giveaway on the saw you got and fixed up. Any Roadside Logging on your agenda down the way ? Lot of lifting of Rounds into your truck I know, but luv how you scope out fallen trees and cut ‘em up 🤙🏻. Thnx…
It's a fairly low BTU wood- like Cottonwood. Usually FULL of water, and it's stringy and difficult to split. But, it burns perfectly well for recreational use- and they grow HUGE, so you'll end up with lots of wood.
I like the video. I have a MS310 as well nice ol saw but unfortunately mine is showing its age. Not sure what you have to do for your give away but I’d definitely be interested. Lol
Those older stihl farm bosses are certainly durable, well built machines.
It’s good to see someone else has a ms310. I bought one close to 30 years ago and still use it on smaller wood .
Some lucky person will be very happy to win that saw!
The MS 310 was getting it done on that narly sycamore, great video.

Hey Scheib , that saw runs good man .
One of my saws is a 310 and it’s been a great little saw . Had it for ten years with no issues
Nice MS310!! I have a MS311 bought from a friend who's now passed....Stay Hydrated and Have a Safe Day
Hello Don, new saw is cutting nicely. Stay safe
Nice saw and cuts well.
Nice lil saw. If you ever come across a shorter bar you might be even more happy with the lil guy! For the winner!
The MS310 is getting work done!
I have an MS310, it works really well. Light saw too
It's nice of you to give away that awesome saw
Good cutting, those sycamore logs look wild compared to what I’m used to seeing around here.
Great job on the ms310 , great video!
Nice saw
That is a nice chainsaw. It was my first chainsaw that I bought and still is a favorite
I'm burning this now in my woodstove. Burns pretty good. I call it beech.
This is American sycamore they look similar
Beech is about 300 times better firewood than sycamore!
I learn something new everyday. I thought they where the same. 🤷♂️ Thanks for the education.
Thats a nice size saw, would be awesome to win!! The sycamore is some of the most different wood that we have in the USA. Makes some unique lumber if let set for a year and then quartersawn! Can be beautiful!
310 sounds good Don. Really good sized saw for that size wood 👌🏻
Take care,
Brandon

Good deal on the garage sale find, looks like a nice running saw!
Nice score on the saw, cuts great
Nice little 60 cc saw
I really want to see the video of your splitter running this wood. Thanks

Nice saw keep up the good work.
Scheib, drill a hole in that muffler, or get a better one for it but it looks like a great deal but it sounds like it's struggling! Great video.
That’s what I was thinking comments say it’s running good sound like the low jet needs some adjusting

I bought my ms310 new 25 years ago, 24" bar and muffler mod it is a ripper 18" and under wood. This one sounds like it needs a tune and muffler.
Finally got snow here. About time… Ground needs to freeze now.

hi there good sawing nasty logs , best to all john
My grandfather had a monster Sycamore tree in front yard. We cut and burned it up. That was the last time we had it. “2005”
Great job on that saw. Looks like it’s running great!
Good thing you have that nice splitter because you will wear yourself out splitting that by hand
Chuck hated splitting that stuff he said it was very stringy wood. I think Im right. He didn't get much of that kind of wood into split.Great video and Take Care Scheib.
Narley stuff but knots burn good too!
I’m pretty sure we do not have any of that in our area.
Looks like the 310 is running great. Thats what my brother runs. Sycamore is great to fill ditches🤣 You will have loads of fun splitting that. Take care Don👊🏻🍻🇺🇸
I got Sycamore before I got hydraulics, and man, that stuff was horrible. I used the ms211 to noodle every piece..
Sycamore isn't the best for firewood, but it will burn decent when mixed in with some good stuff. Nice find with the saw, you're gonna make someone very happy with that one. See ya soon brother 🍻✌️🇺🇸🤘

The 310is a good size saw.
i have that same model saw and have had for about 25 years, it's a good one. Never cut any sycamore, looks like good firewood.
It's a fairly low BTU wood- like Cottonwood. Usually FULL of water, and it's stringy and difficult to split. But, it burns perfectly well for recreational use- and they grow HUGE, so you'll end up with lots of wood.
Sycamore is a love/hate relationship, but it is good to start a fire when completely seasoned. Not good for a long burn.
🤘🤘

👍👍
What brand of magnetic firewood measuring tool do you have for your saw? Where did you get it from?
I cut down a tree 2years ago I cut the rounds in to 6 pieces instead of of 4 and they were still big
Does this tree shed bark every year? Looks so much like Grey Box, or Ghost Gum from here in Australia, is this a Eucalypt?
No this is sycamore
How's the old 290
Sweeeet!!!!
Whoo scheib another great day in the office 👀 like 👍 someone will be getting a nice chainsaw along the way 😮😊❤

How do we enter that giveaway?
Sounds like the carburetor needs to be tuned.
