Thanks so much for this rarity. I have long felt that given the short attention spans and lowering budgets of today, a return to the 15 minute format could work. This episode manages to pull the story together in spite of the runtime, due to the strength of the performances. I was particularly interested in Joe Mantell's work as his friend, as the way he plays the material, especially that last scene, adds a certain yearning, pining element that surprises me.
Amazing how so much story could be packed in such a short run-time. Not to mention the settings (particularly the girl's apartment) tells you almost as much about the characters as the dialogue! And I was surprised (maybe not as much as I thought) that William Asher not only directed, but also wrote this show...an extremely talented man!
Originally seen on NBC in the "SHORT SHORT DRAMAS" series {Tuesdays and Thursdays, 7:15pm(et)}, with Ruth Woods as host (appearing live), and originally sponsored by Pepsi-Cola [note the cleverly placed sign at 2:27]. This is a later syndicated edition.
@@sleeplessdreamer1814 The Philco Television Playhouse S5.E23 "Marty" Episode aired May 24, 1953 Rod Steiger, Nancy Marchand, Joe Mantell This was every bit touching as the Borgnine version.
I thought that this was the early 1950's MGM flick, The Light Touch starring Stewart Granger and the lovely Italian star, Pier Angeli that dealt with illegal selling of paintings and trying to pass off fakes as originals.

Joe Mantell would support another Marty this same year and reprise the role on the Big Screen the next.
Known for uttering one of the most famous ending lines to a movie: "Forget it Jake, it's Chinatown." (in Chinatown (1974)).
Thank you for revealing why Mantell looked so familiar. Marty....I love that movie.

@@BeachsideHank Thank you. I would love to see that. I have watched Marty several times and own a DVD of it.
Bernard J. Prockter also produced "TREASURY MEN IN ACTION" (aka "FEDERAL MEN" in syndication).
