Watching this now I'm just wondering how awkward it must have been for Robert Gant when Larry King mentioned that he was straight and asked him questions referring to straight actors. Poor guy. Good for him for coming out later.
He just kept asking endless variations of the same questions... Larry King was more obsessed with the sex than the story line, the social issues... The actors handled it like champs, to be quite honest!
There is so much more to this show than just straight actors playing gay characters, and it would've been nice to see Larry King host a mature and insightful interview, rather than focussing on each individual's sexuality and asking the entire group the same narrow-minded question one by one. The cast handled it well though, especially Randy Harrison and Peter Paige, and I really like Robert Gant's response (4:05). Honestly, it reminds me a little of the Reza Aslan interview on Fox News.
No he didn't... Robert Gant came out while on the show... he was on the cover of the August 2002 edition of The Advocate with the title "Queer as Folk's Robert Gant. Coming Out For the First Time, the Show's Sexiest New Star Finally Shares the Intimate Tales of His Life as a Gay Man". He was out after the second season, hence his comment of "the juries still out on that" when Larry referred to him as straight (this interview was in April 2002, four months before the Advocate cover).
GET OVER THE ''MAKING LOVE'' QUESTIONS. Larry, man, there is more to the show than the sex scenes. Its seems like two thirds of this interview was wasted asking "was it uncomfortable kissing/making a love scene?'' to the straight actors. It's almost as if he's hinting around that they SHOULD have felt uncomfortable.
I agree with you. He keeps on insisting on that. He just cannot believe these actors were so happy about the show. I'm very proud of all the cast. Throughout the whole interview, it seemed like Larry was an immature kid and the actors were in a higher level trying to ignore Larry's ignorance...
yes he came out in an articel just after this - he had said he didn't want to discuss his sexuality on this show, and you can see he feels uncomfortable every time larry king calls him "a straight man"...
it's funny to go back and watch this now.actualy robert came out during the filming of the show. larry king makes me mad but i think they all handeled him pretty well.
Yes, I notice also that the questions are very difficult for him. And now, knowing the whole story it is painfully obvious that he tries to be as honest as possible but to a point. I read somewhere that Gant says coming out has released an enormous amount of energy in him. BTW, he does say "The jury is still out on that one" when Larry introduces him as straight.
haha good catch. Glad I found this interview for them, but also, it's interesting here that Robert Gant hadn't come out yet and Larry probably made him feel really awkward by saying he's straight in real life. :/ Stupid questions he kept pushing on them! :/
Scott is pretty funny :P And I actually didn't realize how very beautiful Michelle is until now... But seeing the entire cast just makes me warm inside, and makes me want to smile. They seem so nice :)
Wait... I'm confused. had Robert not come out before this interview, or just come out, or what? was Larry just slow on the uptake? I know he came out sometime while they were filming, I just don't know when.
I love Robert's responses because they're so true and honest but is it just me or does he look kind of sad at 5:11? I wonder if that's because he hadn't come out at this point? This was such a great cast and a great show and I hate how Larry is practically badgering them, especially Thea.
It's funny because this is an old enough interview that it was before Robert was out so it's kind of interesting to see his reaction when Larry says he's straight. I really like his comment though that it doesn't matter who you're kissing because it is just acting no matter what.
The same questions (like 3 or 4) for everyone, and he ask the same questions again and again but just in other words..it's like explaining it to a kid or something, with the diference that a kid just wants to know and this sick zombie is a perve and is hating them in their faces... The cast couldn't be any better
@ArcticSnoww You're right. I didn't notice. Again, I don't search for those sort of things, so it may have been my innocence in watching the interview. Or the fact I was more interested in the actors than him.
(Continued) There is also another side of the story. Robert Gant says in an interview that openly gay actors are often not offered "straight boyfriend" kind of roles. he himself admits he has passed that kind of a role after coming out. He also says that in America it is different than in Europe and that in Europe directors are more open-minded. At the end of the day - there was even an article for Gant "Robert Gant can play it straight". You draw your conclusions...
Larry King really keeps banging that "what's it like to play a gay character when you're straight" over and over. I guess Robert Gant was just not ready to come out at that time. I'm glad he did though.
Is he ever going to get past his own narrow-mindedness and ask them a different question? It's like he's trying to get somebody to agree with him that homosexuality is unnatural or weird, simply because he can't handle it. All of the cast dealt with him brilliantly, but it's a shame they didn't get an insightful, intelligent interview. QAF is one of the best shows ever made.
Re: Laura Cantrell That's giving Larry way too much credit. I guarantee you he had no idea about those rumors. That was fan speculation or underground gay gossip. It was not touched in the media. If the show aired now they might, but not in 2001.
He wasn't openly gay to the press at the time. It was hard in this interview especially because Larry was overly fixated on who is gay and straight in real life.
I just have to say, [and I know it sounds ridiculous], but I don't think I would be as much of an activist for gay rights if I hadn't watch QaF and The L Word. Because when you watch these shows, you become so completely immersed in them and the labels just come away and you forget that there is a "straight world" and a "gay world". All you pay attention to is love and relationships because that's all that matters. And I think that's the biggest combatant against homophobia and ignorance.
why is he so fixated on the actors' sexualities and why is he assuming they're all straight and when they're not, it's the only thing he asks about. every question is so narrow-minded and "is it hard pretending to be gay?" like get over it, ask some mature, insightful questions. well handled by the cast
I can tell when Larry referred to Robert Gant as straight, he squirmed a little cause i guess he was not ready to come out yet despite playing a gay character.
Its really quite funny how Larry King seems to be looking for difficulties for straight actors playing gay and they all just say ''what are you talking about, its called acting?'' Its not weird its wonderful.
Wow... LA really is like that at times. I love Thea's voice. It's like a lullaby. I just love the whole cast. I DO NOT love Larry King being all up in their faces about everything and not allowing them to complete their thoughts.
@PrayerBeforeBirth Maybe I'm a bit innocent when it comes to people being 'impolite'. The only two times I found him EXTREMELY rude was when he cut that woman off, and when he said to Peter his character was I think 'spoofy' I forget the word exactly, but it was rude. Otherwise, I was having a hard time finding him rude. Again, it may be my innocence @.@
Here it does. The main idea is that gay and straight people are the same. And Larry King actually tries to point out out how what we see on the TV screen is different than the reality. However, he overdoes it- and end up insulting quite a lot of people. Including the actors. In addition, he does not take a look into any other of the storylines, which makes me think he has not seen a singlr episode
Larry King really can't see past guy kissing/f***ing guy or girl kissing/f***ing girl without it being a problem. It is acting. And the whole straight acting on the show. He really can't see that they are playing a role like they would do any other show. And for any one that has a problem with the straight people on the show, i think they show be happy that their are people that can look past the stereotyping to play a gay character it show how open they are to gay people.
Hasn't Robert come out since this interview? That aside, why does it even matter if the actors are straight or gay? They're actors! They act, it's what they do! You can play a murderer without being one, play a mother without being one . . . why can't you play a gay person without being one?
"jury's out on that one"... hah, larry is like: "awk-ward." sad that he still felt the need to stay in the closet even as he was on the show, but glad he felt comfortable enough by the end!
Whatever his personal feelings (negative or positive) as a journalist and a presenter SURELY he could have come up with some varying questions - none of them found it THAT difficult playing gay characters; new question please...
I read from an interview that Robert was a bit torn here. This was not how he wanted to be outed, but he hated to lie as well. It would have been better not to concentrate on who's gay and who's not anyway.
i really wouldn't have expected Larry King to be so narrow-minded about the topic of sexuaility and the question of portraying it. For actors those are the most desired roles in which they can find a challenge, develop their acting skills and grow professionally. What would be the point in playing a character who is similar to yourself in real life? And overemphasizing each of the actors sexuality is extremely rude, if you ask me.
I think part of why Larry makes a big deal because media wanted to know. Everyone wanted to believe that Gale and Randy had an off screen romance (I know, I was among them), however, that's totally romantic thinking, and often doesn't happen. I'll also agree that Larry is an asshole and makes way to big a deal about it, say it once, be done with it. One last comment, I know Gale and Randy wanted each other as Brian and Justin and remained best friends after the show ended.
Why am I the only one who thinks he isn't rude? I think maybe because I'm the only one thinking 'oh, he's like, seventy fucking years-old, he has no idea how the gay community is like now.'
All LARRY KING Cares About i " IS IT HARD TO PLAY A LOVE SCENE?" "WHATS THE HARDEST PART?? Its asked at least ten times like thats all the interview is about thats all hes interested in!!! GET OVER IT
All this stupid 'interviewer' asked throughout the whole show was 'was it difficult for you to play a gay character', prompting them to say it was, as if its wrong or something?! Didnt do this amazing show any justice.
and is being incredibly rude cutting everyone off all of the time, and when he said to Thea "asuming it's something you've never done" he is being very pushy poking in to their personal lives constantly, when that is clearly not what they are there for. Does anyone else have an opinion on this? thanks:)
@Mahadogirl he could be asking more Qs relating to the actual story, character and issues the drama deals with, but instead, he keeps repeating who's really gay or not in real life. I am disappointed with his lack of intelligent questions.
Watching this now I'm just wondering how awkward it must have been for Robert Gant when Larry King mentioned that he was straight and asked him questions referring to straight actors. Poor guy. Good for him for coming out later.

The cast handled it well though, especially Randy Harrison and Peter Paige, and I really like Robert Gant's response (4:05). Honestly, it reminds me a little of the Reza Aslan interview on Fox News.
I love Scott. He does have a great sense of humor just like Ted!
Robert came out after the show ended
No he didn't... Robert Gant came out while on the show... he was on the cover of the August 2002 edition of The Advocate with the title "Queer as Folk's Robert Gant. I loved the show and still do!
Very well spoken :)
"what's the hardest part about playing a gay character?" The discrimination, of course...
Sad for Robert but sad for Thea too
Me encanta como habla Thea. Tiene una voz que ahh~~ me calma..
I agree with you. He keeps on insisting on that. He just cannot believe these actors were so happy about the show. I'm very proud of all the cast. Throughout the whole interview, it seemed like Larry was an immature kid and the actors were in a higher level trying to ignore Larry's ignorance...
Oh, and I love thea's face when he gets the name of her character wrong.
yes he came out in an articel just after this - he had said he didn't want to discuss his sexuality on this show, and you can see he feels uncomfortable every time larry king calls him "a straight man"...
is Gant not out yet in this interview?
AMEN!
God, I never realized Larry was such a phobic person...
it's funny to go back and watch this now.actualy robert came out during the filming of the show. larry king makes me mad but i think they all handeled him pretty well.
The ONLY thing I enjoy about this interview is how the actors, at several occasions, have to prevent themselves from laughing at Larry's stupidity.
Thea gill also is acting like a pure straight woman... in this interview..
Scott is pretty funny :P
And I actually didn't realize how very beautiful Michelle is until now...
But seeing the entire cast just makes me warm inside, and makes me want to smile. They seem so nice :)
Oh man I really felt for Robert. I could barely watch.
Tea is really beautiful.
Wait... I'm confused. had Robert not come out before this interview, or just come out, or what? was Larry just slow on the uptake? I know he came out sometime while they were filming, I just don't know when.
Okay but.. Imagine this interview happening in 2015 and instead or Harry Ling (oops xp) Ellen... Yup sounds so much better
It hurts my heart that Robert Gant and Thea Gill weren't out during this interview. They shouldn't have had to hide their truth.
I wonder if these guys ever met their British Counterparts, and what did they think of the UK Version and what did the UK think of the US Version.
I love Robert's responses because they're so true and honest but is it just me or does he look kind of sad at 5:11? I wonder if that's because he hadn't come out at this point? This was such a great cast and a great show and I hate how Larry is practically badgering them, especially Thea.
Thea is *radiant* :)
haha yeah. Randy in a previous part did laugh at him when he asked if some of the writers are gay. I would be laughing at Larry's stupidity. lol
it's peterson.. not patterson
Larry King seems so old fashioned and gross. He also constantly interrupts them urgh... so annoying!
It's funny because this is an old enough interview that it was before Robert was out so it's kind of interesting to see his reaction when Larry says he's straight. I really like his comment though that it doesn't matter who you're kissing because it is just acting no matter what.
Melanie and Linds are so beautiful...This show is just ace, better than the UK version I think.
when was he out ?
how many times can they answer the same questions?
jeez
The same questions (like 3 or 4) for everyone, and he ask the same questions again and again but just in other words..it's like explaining it to a kid or something, with the diference that a kid just wants to know and this sick zombie is a perve and is hating them in their faces...
The cast couldn't be any better
I love all the actors (even Hal, Peter, Randy and Gale) all making fun of Larry at some point.
Oh jeez Robert wasn't out yet
what does robert gant say when larry king said he is straight????
"jurry's still out on that"
If I heard correctly, "Jury's out on that one, actually."
so you're saying he's gay?
If I were Larry King, I would be so ashamed of myself asking such dumb questions.
poor robert you can see he was struggling and its not as if larry made the actors feel at ease
Teddy!
after the show
Robert Gant explained it perfectly. Acting is acting.
Thea Gill and Michelle Clunie are gorgeous!!!!!
@ArcticSnoww You're right. I didn't notice. Again, I don't search for those sort of things, so it may have been my innocence in watching the interview. Or the fact I was more interested in the actors than him.
hey guys i thought that robert is a gay but here he is saying that he is straight.... what is this ?

larry king sounds like he just really wished the interview was over.
Thea's so pretty
Also he pronounces Lindsay's last name "Patterson" instead of pederson and Thea tried not to laugh
This interview is making me laugh so much mainly because Larry is such a loser. Thanks for posting!
and it;s just like Robert said - gay actors have played straight characters for ages.
yeah robert, "whats the hardest part about playing a gay man"
lolololololol
didn't robert gant come out yet when that interview was aired? heard he's also gay too
Ra1nB0w he came out during the show I wanna say season 3
Larry King really keeps banging that "what's it like to play a gay character when you're straight" over and over.
I guess Robert Gant was just not ready to come out at that time. I'm glad he did though.

Actully, Robert Gant wasn't out at the time of this interview, so you can't really blame Larry King or his research people...
Re: Laura Cantrell
That's giving Larry way too much credit. I guarantee you he had no idea about those rumors. That was fan speculation or underground gay gossip. It was not touched in the media. If the show aired now they might, but not in 2001.
I really like the name "Thea Gill" :) it sounds so poethic. And she's an awesome woman (all of the cast are!). Stupid Larry...
He wasn't openly gay to the press at the time. It was hard in this interview especially because Larry was overly fixated on who is gay and straight in real life.

@GaaraSabuka At this point he was 'straight' to the public. ^^
I can tell when Larry referred to Robert Gant as straight, he squirmed a little cause i guess he was not ready to come out yet despite playing a gay character.
WAIT, so on QAF they actually had sex? it was real? or was it fake?
Its really quite funny how Larry King seems to be looking for difficulties for straight actors playing gay and they all just say ''what are you talking about, its called acting?'' Its not weird its wonderful.
Every question: 'Is it hard playing a gay person/is it hard being a gay person on a gay show?' Every answer: 'Oh my God, NO LARRY!'
Wow... LA really is like that at times.
I love Thea's voice. It's like a lullaby. I just love the whole cast. I DO NOT love Larry King being all up in their faces about everything and not allowing them to complete their thoughts.
the thing says "Queer as Folk immoral or harmless?"... immoral for who?
@PrayerBeforeBirth Maybe I'm a bit innocent when it comes to people being 'impolite'. why is larry king such a popular show?
is this how he treats all his guests or just the ones who support gay rights?
err Larry was so weird in this interview, i felt sorry for Bobby & Thea.
I think part of why Larry makes a big deal because media wanted to know. Larry King married 8 times, yet he dubbed the show “immoral”
Ha🙂
well it sounds like stiff straight Larry needs some stiff gay action to loosen/open up a bit
Robert is actually gay he was out with his family but with his career he came out after the show
@kyetra1 it was fake...it's not porn
All LARRY KING Cares About i " IS IT HARD TO PLAY A LOVE SCENE?" "WHATS THE HARDEST PART?? Its asked at least ten times like thats all the interview is about thats all hes interested in!!! GET OVER IT
