Donna (Meryl Streep), an independent hotelier in the Greek islands, is preparing for her daughter's wedding with the help of two old friends. Meanwhile Sophie, the spirited bride, has a plan. I've always been impressed by how threatening and panic-inducing they made this scene because the original song really isn't. But you feel the terror building in this scene and it feels like the song is really adding to it, but that's completely absent listening to the original. I just think this is one of the strongest points in the movie.
Totally Agree. During the peak where Sophie's confused and anxious, *AND THEN* the voices were just everywhere and I felt as trapped as Sophie

The handheld camera after she talks to sam really helps with the build-up, and the fast cuts between shots during the climax also helps you achieve a sense of chaos that you would never be able to do in a live show. Brilliant!

@@Ethan-en2ij What Ivanna means is that a panic attack feels disorientating. Like every sound is overwhelming, and that you feel claustrophobic but it's a kind of claustrophobia you can't escape. It depicts it perfectly in this scene where Sophie is surrounded by all her "dads", stress, and can't escape.

I did this musical at my high school this last year. Having literally been in this scene, I can attest to the 100% pure anxiety it gives off
Totally agree, especially when they showed like the small details like the dolphin almost beating like a heart. I have very bad panic attacks and it seems like things are spinning or pulsating around me. Vision goes blurry sometimes. Although in Sophie’s case, alcohol probably made these feelings worse.

She never talks about her own father, just her mother, so she could feel if she didn’t have a father figure then Donna could be both for Sophie. A very “i didn’t have a dad and I throughly I turned out fine!” Moment :)

As someone who has panic attacks I can say this is how they feel in a way. You are surrounded by things and they all start making noise and bothering you until sometimes you eventually pass out.

Most of the island is on the party. And it’s pretty normal that the whole village helps with a wedding in Greece so I think if nothing else other people had party like this and the whole island is kinda used to it
I love the symbolism of this moment in the song. After everything goes wrong for Sophie, the next lines in the song that you hear are “ain’t no big decision. You know what to do!” Even though she doesn’t. Instead she collapses

I love the good rep on what anxiety and overstimulation looks like but may I also point out how the lyrics fit as well? When everyone is in the circle around Sophie, the lyrics "its a big decision" and "you know what to do" start. Whenever someone ask how do I describe my panic attacks I would talk about this scene, how Sofie sees everything spinning, feeling like you can’t breath hearing too much and nothing at all, and even having ur mom/person u care about running into the crowd just to make sure ur safe..
On another note Harry’s “I’m ur Father! I’ll be there!” Moment is my favorite moment in the entire movie

This is what anxiety is, and you could even see that Donna was worried for Sophie in that scene when she was in the middle of the circles. It had portrayed that everyone's eyes were on her making her very anxious which caused her to pass out.
