I wonder if that’s where I differ from… a lot of viewers. I don’t think character development requires showing someone’s backstory. Especially since in this case they’re clearly trying to keep it mysterious and secretive. This is a cool scene. But… in movies and tv, “still scenery” are often important because they are visual media. I don’t think that needs to be sacrificed. “Less grunts” This show already has SO much important dialogue. And people complain about it constantly. For some reason not realizing how important it is lol.

Add me to the chorus of people asking why this was cut. This is a great scene. Vilgefortz is clearly being set up as the villain like he was in the books, yet in order to become something worth watching we need scenes like this. He needs to be clever, menacing, and charismatic so that people mistake his violence for change.

Talking to IGN, The Witcher showrunner and Executive Producer, Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, said of the seven season plan, “It would be a straight translation of the books… I think there's just so much material that I don't feel the need to start inventing my own to keep it going.”
    BIG KAPPA, LMAO
So they decided to change the personality of the characters to the worse, removed some good scenes from the book, spoiled the Emhyr's capacity as a father of Ciri 5 season earlier than it should, made Vesemir a guy far from what is in the books, Eskel a drunken looser, Yennefer instead of a teacher and then a "mother" to Ciri, as a woman who would give anything to take back her magic back with teenage attitude, Triss the woman that instead of a big sister is something like an aunt, Kahir is faithful to Emhyr instead of a blackmailed follower that wants to see free his imprisoned dad etc. If you are not going to follow the books just make it clear from the beginning, dont make false statements in order to hype the fans. Follow the books or at least do it in a 50% ffs.

      Wanna know the best/worst part?
Lauren Schmidt Hissrich said that Vesemir was her favourite character because he was a fatherly figure to the cast.
If that's the case, why on Earth would he risk a he put Ciri, whose blood in the show can somehow recreate the witcher's mutagene, by putting her through the Trial of the Grasses that has a 100% chance of killing girls?!
Hell, it would have been immensely stupid even if Ciri was a boy and had 70% chance of dying.

Also, when you say that it blurs the line between good and evil more, are you referring to the Witcher? Because that's only really true because we know absoulutely nothing about most characters in the TV series. Even with that I think that most GOT characters can't be divided to good and evil. It also better portays this nuance way better. When in it's early stages it had already done so much more than The Witcher TV series has.

Probably the scene was cut as part of a larger trimming I'm assuming happened because of Henry's accident.
The entire second season was wacky. If first season gave a sense of progression the second one was like GoT 6-8, with characters teleporting right and left.
Another example, after Gerald, Yennefer, Jaskier and the dwarfs meet, only Gerald and Yennefer are show walking into Kaer Morhen, Jaskier noticeable missing from that scene and everything that follows until Ciri wakes him like he's always been around.
    Witcher s1 was GoT s1-5. S2 is GoT s6-8.

Yes let's cut all meaningful character interactions and make up entire story-arcs that ruin beloved protagonists just so that we can have more action sequences. Because surely the Witcher is all about action right. Why else would there be all the swords. The one episode, with Nivellen, where they actually adapted the original material instead of the producer making up BS was a master-piece. But no we couldn't have meaningful character development between Geralt, Ciri and Yennefer. No, we needed cheap action sequences for the sake of having them.

Like the other comments before mine, why was this cut ? The only proof of vilgerfort's dark side is that miniscule scene from S01, this scene further highlights how the character came to be and what would be his drive.

If they are so surprised that Yennefer wasn't destroyed by using fire magic, then how Rience is able to use it all the time without any issue and literally no one is surprised when witnessing it? It seems they have introduced a big logical inconsistency here when they decided to massively change how the magic works. Not to mention that a lot of magic in this season happens without any cost - repeatedly violating the rule they introduced in the last season (yet another thing not from the books).
