I was curious about some of the mechanics so I looked up some info: -back flipping gives you some invincibility frames -shooting while jumping does double damage -the curveball shot does double damage also -taking damage while your power ups are more then 2 bars will reduce your power ups -your health refills every time you go to a new planet
Is _any_ of that info mentioned in the game's manual? Because there's no way kids back then would have found out about half of that on their own (not from just a rental for sure).
@@lyrand6408 I doubt any of it's in the manual, but speedrunners generally know about this kind of stuff so I checked out a run by spiriax at AGDQ 2010 where he runs the game and mentions many of the mechanics
@@lyrand6408 I think those are things you would figure out as a child. It's what we did. Noticing you live longer with back flips and that attacks phase through you and that enemies die faster when you jump are basic things you learn in just a couple of tries. Curve shots might be less intuitive, especially if you consider how hard it is to hit enemies with it, but then again, given how poorly the controls are for shooting it might not be any harder than normal shots :p Maybe I was just a smart kind, I don't know, but figuring out these things was necessary for most games. Arcade games didn't come with manuals and people had home computers with copied/cracked games that had no manuals, so we were very used to hitting buttons and observing and figuring out what happens and what works and how to cheese games/levels. It also helped to play with someone else. It's way easier to spot some things and come up with tactics and strategies when you're not frantically trying to not die.
Yes! And go through the game with each different character! Alucard can make some sections much easier but he’s not so great vs bosses and Sypha is basically the opposite
I remember one day at high school (at a time were emulation was much easier to do) I was randomly playing this game that for some stupid reason believed it was an actual Street Fighter game (how näive I was) and enjoyed it despite being unable to beat planet 1-3, years later I got it on my 3DS and Wii U Virtual Console (enjoying it as well), THEN back in 2017 I nabbed a NES cart for about 5 bucks and is a game I would feel really hurt if I end up selling it (also... I'm not gonna lie, AVGN's video of Street Fighter 2010 made a lot of influence for me to nab the cart), and FUNNY ENOUGH, my bros. back in the 90's got the game borrowed for their friend at a game store who always loved to go outside school to offer games as well and my bros. (kinda) hate me because they failed were I succedeed (I beated the game, they never couldn't).
This is one of those games you would buy after renting it. It’s a really fun game once you figure out the weird controls, it’s frustrating in just the right way.
I know I bugged you on stream multiple times, but thanks for checking out this fun and lesser known game! Great debunk of a game that haunted my childhood.
I wish they had made a sequel to this one that really honed in one the fun stuff about the movement and boss focused gameplay. It reminds me of Sega's Alien Soldier.
Yo Ryu , gotta tell you man, it's been a tough week and today's a tough day, but the fact you posted this and I get to watch this and this is such a hidden gem that just made my day, thanks for everything you do man , Appreciate you more than you know 👊
I commented on your last community post about this game 11 days ago, I'm really glad you were able to make a video about it! I don't 100% agree with you about your criticisms about the game, but it's fine, I'm just glad that you were able to show how the game is, and hopefully get more people interested in it, it's a great game in my opinion. So, you don't get healed between the levels of the same world, until you warp to the next world. At 8:16 you were supposed to shoot that red circular thing on the left, because it's an orb that protects your back from being shot at. When you have full powerups, you lose a bar for every hit you take, until you have only 2 bars left, and then you don't lose any more powerups unless you actually die. The end boss is super easy if you have full powerup, you don't even have to leave the wall to kill him. Personally, I love this game. My husband plays this all on a single life, and in the second to last level, is able to take zero damage, even on the spot where you have to hang down while the spheres go over you. I love hearing the music, it feels like some of the best music in the NES era. For another debunking episode, I suggest Double Dragon 3. Please when you do that video game, try to pause the gameplay for the second level of the pyramid, because it has a really long song on there that you don't hear the entirety of in normal gameplay. You pause just after you beat the guys on the ledge and you get to a elevator platform that you jump to. If you delay that jump, you get to listen to a song that goes for 3 minutes before it repeats itself. It really is great song.
Here's the song I'm referring to, in case he doesn't do the video, and anyone is curious about what I'm talking about: ua-cam.com/video/X1niIhuF5KU/v-deo.html
The whole losing your power-ups when you get hit but don't die is like Mario. You have the fire-flower, but get hit once you'll lose it, but you're still alive. You have any power-up, you'll lose it after getting hit just once. Looks like they took a page from Mario's playbook. lol
Woah, I have NEVER heard of this one and I spent most of my free time as a kid reading video game mags, at Blockbuster looking for new cartridges to rent, the arcade, or at home playing video games. Cool, thanks!
In my opinion, the controls are perfect. Learning to use the moveset is how you master the game. If this game were like contra, it would be too easy. Ken is powerful, and throwing punches and kicks is super sweet! Granted, you can cheese some bosses, but between the action, the music, the style and challenge, 2010 ten is an underrated gem.
Those platform/enemies you can’t avoid getting hit by… just keep shooting them. They get bigger and bigger, and then explode… if my rusty brain remembers from 84 years ago.
Great video. This was a pretty good game that I got cheap off of a rental shop back in the day. Not a favorite , but I enjoyed it. The hardest part for me was the final stage with the tight timer to kill all the bosses. I beat the game much later, legit on an emulator.
I beat it when I was 7. It was tough but, enough mornings waiting for the school bus with trial and error I eventually beat it. This is so nostalgic to see this again, UA-cam recommends wins again.
I played this game as a kid (long before AVGN video) and the main thing I liked about the game was the atmosphere, you were basically thrown into amazingly drawn and pretty distinct alien worlds which made you wish you could explore more of them.
As far as I remember, "Blaster Master" ("Chou Wakusei Senki Metafight" jap.) was a very cool, interesting and complicated game (in terms of NES). You should definitely give it a shot.
5:01, you have to blow up that little enemy with your strong shot. I think you press down and shoot. You did it a couple of times, but that sends out your big disk. Curveball shot.
@Ryu The powerups are lost when you take damage. 1 Spheres worth per hit. Edit: The game heals you after you finish a "PLANET." Each warp isn't exactly a planet though.
Makes me want to try it again. I have gotten to the second level once. after many tries I have given up on it. the game does look nice and the music is cool.

One of my favourite NES games ever! Really cool game actually. Played it through many, many times. I still couldn't do it with 0 deaths but 0 continues at least.
I got this game for my birday birthday way back when. It's challenging and really well put together. There is also an orb power up that deals damage when it hits enemies.
I really like this game a lot. It has a handful of frustrating moments that I would describe as "Mega Man difficulty". That is, a few parts prey on the player not knowing what's coming and lure you into a death trap. But the game isn't as tough as I think it's reputation has made it out to be. I'd call it an unsung gem of the NES.
For this series, I'd love to see you tackle Ikari Warriors. I honestly don't even know if it can be debunked. It's up there with Battletoads for difficulty.

I really like you Ryu but please don’t tell me that you didn’t research this game before trying it out, it’s fine to say you never played the game but don’t say you didn’t know how to get through the stages and bosses.
Ryu, you figured it out because you have a nose for cheese. Us mere mortals don't.
Love this game. Took forever to beat
Loved the series !! Please do The Legend of Zelda Adventure of Link!
Have you already, or do you have plans to do Debunking the Difficulty for Final Fight (SNES)? That is one of those games I have made it far, but never beat. Would be neat to watch.
