  • Hoa Lo Prison (or know as Maison Centrale "Hanoi Hilton") in downtown Hanoi has a particularly grim history. This is a place of brutality. A place of torture. It's the hell no-one wants to stay in.
This was a jail built by the French colonial government; its first prisoners arrived in 1899. The French kept mainly political prisoners here along with those awaiting sentencing at the nearby Court of Justice.
Hoa Lo Prison, after all, is a place best known in the West as one of the prisons where American pilots who had been shot down and captured were kept as prisoners of war. John McCain was held here at various times during his five and a half years.

I’m sorry but you have no business trying to speak English. Just stick to your language because you make no sense in English.

Good job on the commentary. Most people in the US don't realize that the Vietnamese wanted freedom to rule their own country.

I visited this small place. But it took me more than an hour to see and read everything. By the end of the tour, I left the place with a very low mood. Couldn’t think about anything apart from the atrocities the prisoners had gone through. A must visit for anyone who visits Hanoi.

I just returned from Vietnam. And Hoa Lo Prison was one of my most memorable experiences. This is a must see for any traveler to Vietnam. A telling reminder of the exploitation and cruelty of colonialism. The stories are heart-breaking...

    The Vietnamese deserve their freedom.
    They are great people.
Brave, courageous, hardworking, industrious, patient, very resilient.
    May God bless you always.

The OUTRAGE that I feel for tone ….what about the 3 million lives that vietnamese people paid in the 100 years of wars against humanity committed by the French and the Americans….what about the B52 carpet bombing, an infamous incident which occurred not far from the prison, in which in just a few hours hundreds of people were killed most of them women and children and old people….and what about the infamous Mi Lai massacre by the Americans; except that Vietnames people know that there were many Mi Lai’s no just the one that made the news…in this neighborhood I personally know one elderly lady missing one leg who sells trinkets on the street who tells of how at the age of 7 she lost her leg in one of the bombings…right on the street on which I live is an elderly man missing all his fingers who tells of how as a child he picked up a bomb and had his fingers blown away….of course this is just the tip of the iceberg…had these things been taken into account the tone of the video would have been much different
