It's just a Tetra TMO RF receiver UHF (380-395MHz) which uses 25KHz spacing TDMA 4 Slots. Control channel (continuous) and the traffic channel.
Like the Tetra DMO Repeater GB7PR-R which Tx a presence check burst signal every few seconds.
The BS continuously and (simultaneously) receive continuously from various mobiles on different carrier frequencies.

Tetra network they use, when you go past base stations you would also get indications on your little tool. In the UK, TETRA base stations typically transmit in the 390-400 MHz frequency band, which is just below the UHF TV band. Motorola Solutions owns the Airwave TETRA network in the United Kingdom. The Airwave network is a mobile communications network that uses the Terrestrial Trunked Radio (TETRA) specification and is used by emergency services in Great Britain.

1 thing comes to mind, the price for these is not out of the reach of drug runners meaning before any raid goes ahead alot of survalance happens, and alot of following using radios for communication this would give heads up as the signal bars would be constantly strong if other wise not if the person wasent in a strong signal area, if a person were being taled often the bars would rise alot, surly the police would know this, given this is how most drug dealers get cought, intresting device all the same,

May seem like an obvious question, but could you scan 380-385MHz (which is what Python monitors) with Attenuation on (or a rubbish rubber duck aerial, to narrow down on too much range) and listen for a signal to know when an emergency vehicle is nearby ?.

Some older Uniden scanners such as the BCT7 would detect the frequency of a handheld or extender repeater used in state police/highway patrol cars in the USA.
In the case of the BCT7 anyways, these were in a preloaded bank at the time of manufacture. So today the frequencies used might be outdated.

I put a higher gain antenna on mine and it picks up far enough away. Because of the nature of tetra beacons you won't always receive them at a predictable distance it can vary massively. You'll increase the false alarms if you increase the gain too much. If you got a magmount whip antenna that covers 380MHz and stick it on the roof you would increase the performance of this model by several times. No need to pay more for the other models.

Hi Andy I love the Ringway Manchester channel - Lewis puts out some fascinating content, I'm a big fan! My Dad was a "Y" operator, Royal Signals Regiment abroad then a radio ham in private life and worked on communications intercepts professionally so the bug bit me at an early age. (As a boy, my Dad would point out antennas and ask if I knew what band they were for!) I also work in aerospace & defence, locating emissions is also a professional interest of mine. Incidentally the Uniden Bearcat UBC-125XLT Handheld Scanner has the "Close Call" feature that shows strong local signals and will show you the frequency - gives you a bit more info than 5 LEDs. Looks like it’s detecting TETRA, 380-395MHz. There was a BlackHat/DefCon “project” around a decade ago called Tetra-Trak (used a modified logo of the milk carton Tetra-Pak) where they initially tried to break the encryption, but then they worked out you only needed to know if certain agencies were nearby - similar to this bit of kit you were using.

In the Arkansas when you're upside down and your vehicle is destroyed most likely the police are nearby. The videos I've watched seem to verify this

I'm guessing TETRA like DMR or P25 has GPS on some radios.
So that's probably what's beaconing from the ambulance.

      Any ideas?

"Fuzz Buster"! It's what used to call a similar device, to evade "radar detectors" which were really only illegal if you were using in while driving a semi tractor-trailer (truck driving, over the road, long haul) which in some states (USA) may have been, and might still be) a felony! The term came to mind immediately without even starting the video.

So let's say you're travelling with a herbal remedy. What do you do when the detector flashes? Slow down, turn around, stop? What exactly?
Or you're speeding and it flashes... Do you slow down and find out that it's an ambulance or just a parked police car?
I think it's best to use in a deserted herb farm so that when it pings, you know they're coming closer.
      Maybe I'm wrong.

I used to use a valantine V1 in conjunction with a uniden scanner looped scanning Tetra ranges.
The uniden scanner would lock on to a signal once within about 1km as an early then the V1 pings when it picks up lazer or radar with a direction once nearer.
