Been using it for more than a year as a dedicated media server and works just fine. Have well over 8TB of tv series and movies, including 4k movies and haven't had any issues either.

Good timing. I always re-analyze my IT subscription at the beginning of the year to make improvements and reduces overall costs. This video is quite eye-opening.

This video is so perfectly timed for my life. I have been debating synology but I wanted to see reviews and alternatives. Thanks for the video again!

I've been using a Seagate Personal Cloud 2 NAS for several years, and it has saved my bacon more than once.

LOL I was eyeing up NAS hardware for the new year and this video dropped. Thanks for the look at software for each device, that was really helpful to get a look at day to day use. Is there a solution for someone who has a semi-random bunch of disks lying around?

If you have randomly sized and branded hard drives, your best option is to build an Unraid Server. I have a couple videos on that.

Would you be interested in 3D printing your own enclosure for a couple hard drives and a single-board computer running NextCloud? Would be cool to see a DIY FOSS project achieving the same usability as an ordinary NAS :))

    Wish I could afford one.

I watched your "Create an NAS on a computer" video and that solution looked excellent to me--especially because I could control and configure it from my existing tower pc, create a network drive, and access it from my work/home laptop, creating a shortcut that would live in my File Explorer on those laptops.
Having experimented with this other solution---should I run with the Asustor instead? It seems like I'd be adding more costly hardware...

It may not be for everyone, but for those that want to have backups, it can be a great way to keep a second copy of data around in addition to your server within a PC. You can do both and the NAS supports talking with competing or other equipment to keep data safe.

When I tried Syncthing on my phone some time ago, it turned out it didn't work for backing up things, deletions on the phone got synched on the remote machines. Have they added a way to make it work for automated backups since then?

When you say it is not suitable as a media server, why would you say that? Presumably for single user it is possible to store movies on it and then stream them to a TV?

It’s the hardware limitations. The 1.4 GHz Arm Processor and 2GB of RAM isn’t great for transcoding any media not formatted for direct play. It definitely can’t transcode 4K video in real time.

Hey CJ was looking at buying an Asustor NAS this black friday/cyber monday. How have you liked the support and software you've received with this device? Very little content on Asustor out there would love to see an update.

One thing to be careful is that Live Photos might not be backed up properly because apple is dumb
