All festivals goers forget what bollox we went thru so u can now go to yer Rap festival at Glastonbury for £250 a ticket.. Some of us went to free festivals back in the day!!!
I went to a fair few festivals back in the day, All of them were free. There were no rules but also nobody took the piss. Never saw trouble always a happy vibe.
I was having a pint in the barrels pub in Hereford with my mates and we heard about a free party not far away in Worcestershire. 3 days later I managed to drag myself away from the best party I'd ever been to.
Fun daze... I was 19.spent almost 2yr doing festies.. Missed this one. Mates went. They all dead now so can't share their memories.. Happy daze tho. Miss those daze of 91/2.
I lived on a site with Spiral Tribe. Or rather Spiral Tribe came on to our site just outside Tunbridge Wells in Kent. They only stayed about 3 weeks. It was great Travelling around the south of England in a trailer.(I'm from North East England) Getting moved on from site to site by the police. We actually got escorted out of Kent into Sussex by the police. There must have been around 40 vehicles, mostly all with no tax or insurance and a lot of people under the influence of alcohol or drugs. We pointed this out to the police, but because it suited them they decided to turn a blind eye to all the criminal offences that were getting commited by them moving us on. Hypocritical police. They escorted us right through Tunbridge Wells and the rest of Kent into Sussex where they turned back and let the Sussex police deal with us. Some great memories of those times in the early '90s. I met some really nice and Interesting people. Great times. It's a shame they put a stop to it all with the criminal justice act of 1994. There was more and more people tired of living the way you're more or less told to. In a flat or house watching television. Marriage, 9-5 Job. I didn't watch television for almost 3 years while i was traveling. It really done me the world of good, although there was some people in bigger and better trailers that had satellite dishes. Probably rich kids living on Daddy's money. I didn't see the point of getting away from society as much as possible and then sitting in a trailer watching television. We had our guitars and a radio. It was good when there would be a fire going and then people would come around some with a drink in 1 hand and a guitar or other instrument in the other and there would be like 6 guitars or more and and a drum and flute and other instruments going and having a good jam around the fire away from all towns.

Lived on there in 92 same time as Slayer played Donnington cause i listened to it on radio then got nicked leeving the site to go to the offy. I hadnt noticed 30 vehicles had pulled on and lots of pig activity it was that big. Nicked for outstanding warrant and escorted back to Bradford for court on the Tuesday{ bank holiday weekend}.
@@eugenemclemmont4045 Yeah that was it North Farm industrial estate, behind the factories. There was a proper Gypsy site across the road and some waterworks. We used to take turns doing an offy run up at the off liscence in Pembury. Is that where you were heading before the police got you.
3 weeks on A38 before it and the Forrest fair were as good after wintering in Yorkshire. Moreton valance, had a toilet block and water, brilliant, just down road from several scrumpy farms.
I drove to this in Sensers band van with a load of mates, we got punctures in 2 tyres before we had left London and thought that was it, but just across the road was an identical van with church nonsense on the side, we took this as a sign from god and nicked 2 wheels to continue our journey. I parked up behind the spiral tribe stage, you can see it in aerial photos, a white transit mini-bus. I was supposed to DJ on their rig but ended up doing too many drugs to DJ

U KNOW,, TOTALLY ILLEGAL MOTOR.... TOTALLY OVERLOADED.. MARYANN IS STASHING THE DRUGS UP HER SNATCH!!! THE DRIVERS WELL OVER THE LIMIT AND PROBABLY ON THE RUN TOO!!! WE ARE ALL BUCKULD AND TWISTED AFTER THIS PARTY.. AND AFTER EVERYONE HAS BEEN DETAILS PLEASE.... I was 17 run away with the travelers.. The copper said to me in front of everyone... You need to contact your mother coz she's worried and put u on the missing persons register!!!!! Needless to say, the travelers did take the piss right out of me over that.. Some got arrested for various reasons.. I just get told to phone my mum coz she's worried!!! Coz this party, she thought I was dead ina ditch.... She weren't far wrong!!!!
It looked like fun.. but missed it. I was stuck on a layby on the A34 in Cheshire with no diesel and no way of getting there. Vega bus needed a lot of fuel to get that far south.. managed all the others that year. Yay.

The rest was down to the Police, News , local papers ect. Get to the area you knew something was going to happen then get local paper.Headline usually read, " Hippies invade local beauty spot" and where that was then you went there. Also follow the Police and where they are trying to block, and where the Hellicopter was. Bingo , you`re there.
Most pressing historical question - who the f*ck owned the white statue? Did it arrive with a rig? Spent 56hrs using it as a logistics marker with spangled mates. Such is life, maybe you're never supposed to know such things......
it was funny really, the establishment were up in arms about these 'hippies' - but the majority of the crusty types were children of the landed aristocracy and the gentry, public school types - they were the establishment and are probably running things now. i met a couple at a free festival around 89/90 got to know them quite well and they invited us back to their parents house, which turned out to be a huge country pile out in the sticks, swimming pool, tennis courts the lot. Mummy was an artist but daddy was something big in the city... its always been the case, half of Crass were similar - but they were awesome and weren't all talk, plus Steve was a working class lad.

I did all the legal fusions etc and Bagley's. I'd have liked to experience the fantazia Raves if I ever get a time machine lol
