    After watching this video and quickly trying it out in-game, I have to say that this is the only video - that one has to see to understand and immediately optimize survivability - of all the videos on youtube regarding DEF vs HP. Thank you!

      Agreed every video you see besides this one is saying fall to shields or go all in and the guys are saying going all in the shield are not pointing out that the characters are testing it is Enzo or Kyle understood the defense and Ajax yet, but he pointed that out as well, but everybody is all like all the one or the other look how good my HP is doing while ignoring the fact that they have a specific amount of death on the character they’re using at base that’s providing a fair amount of defense already Right I mean even your characters have a higher starting defense that then they do shields or health and as he pointed out, I already knew this doesn’t block or reduce all kinds of incoming damage. Shields also, don’t observe all kinds of incoming damage. What of your playing Enzo who regenerates 5% of shield with the push button at a very short cool down. You definitely want to pile on shields because it’s a percentage the more shield to have the more you get back and it also I believe kicks off the income regeneration if you have it kickstart it it’s going to happen eventually anyway, but I think it kickstart it so you regenerate and then you start the slower regeneration granted by something on your mats or on your route Components rather you see these guys saying look under defense or defense to shields or whatever and again it’s a combination of defense and health or shield and health seems to me all damage is going to be reduced significantly by very small amount of defense, but certain kinds of damage are so you do need more help This video finally even using Numbers to explain how much defense you need to be looking at for whatever your bill is this was I agree with you is what I’m saying. This video finally lays it out in an understand format with actual numbers the back up the claims instead of somebody piling on a bunch of health, I mean one of the videos I watched the guy was saying he had like 2000 shields as well with shield generation in combat

    Finally someone that has put in a very good visual and doesn’t just say “trust me it works” although I would like to add don’t ignore the sub stats as well for added flexibility. Two components can either have double hp or double def. It doesn’t do anything to your point, which I’m finding it to be spot on, other than one component will almost always be def preferred with another being almost always be hp preferred. It also means sets need some serious buffs because there’s no reason to run most of them.

    really appreciate this man, good job, keep up the testing - nothing is more annoying then videos abut stats without actually looking at the stats and establishing some kind of basic calculation rules through testing - love this kind of content - maybe you could share the docs next time as well if someone wants to do calculations in his/her specific context

    Nice work, now i know why my bunny full hp build survived more than my attempts to build a stronger defense build, I did it wrong, at least my theory was correct that i'll need a lot more def than hp to survive. now i also know how to correct my build, thanks.

    Pretty good explanation! There's another camp that says to ignore defense all together! I believe 1-3 model makes the most logical sense! If i had to explain defense in another word, another label, the logical name would be reinforcement! In this case, HP reinforcement! Because it's subsidizing HP!

    Funny I randomly found this freshly out of the oven video while researching this in-depth myself (but lazy to test throughly and also my descendants are still pretty crappy stats wise compared to others), because now that I unlocked Sharen I found myself dying so much and it makes no sense, with 450k DPS Thunder and all.
    Thanks for the video, it all makes a lot of sense and it's in line with another video I was watching about how tanky-ness was tied to HP, not DEF. Albeit that video was more light.
    So to make sure I got it all right, the best stat you could get was 17515 DEF and 19249 HP as shown in the main "I" screen, right? Followed by 37329 DEF and 15680 HP, which is funny because the DEF difference is quite a bit between the two, but in synergy (EHP) they become similar. I think that's the key take right, that both stats are not just separate but compliment each other.

      Cheers Mate. I was surprised myself, that 25k Def cannot beat 2,8K HP, but i underestimated the exponential diminishing. Glad you like the video.

      @@winndybuilds Would it be possible for you to show the modules you used for the 1|3 and 0|4 with highest EHP (2 HP + 2 DEF). It would be good to have a reference specially on the sub stats, I'm trying to reproduce something close to it but I end up with like 11k DEF and 20k HP.

      @@SToad I used Increased DEF + Sield Conversion DEF and Increased HP + HP Amplification. The substat on the Memory was 4100 Def and the Substat on the Auxilery was 800 HP. Do you maybe use a set piece that has less Main stat than 4683 Def or 646 HP? That could be one reason, or the Substat is too low. Or you used Spear and Shield instead of Shield Conversion DEF Mod.

    How about non-tanks with active shield regen skills like Viessa?

      It's just 10%, not really worth it. Usually Shields offer only 1/3 of the value of HP. 10% of 1/3 is barely 4%. On Viessa I recommend you to use Cold Blooded for the CDR and Damage.

    I have 129K def on my Ult Ajax, 165K shield broken, I'd say I''ve hit the 80% limit. 16K HP

    So, for my Ult AJax i would be better with 28k def and 28k hp which would give me 56k EHP?

    4:00 - shouldn't your analysis be 5/1 through 1/5? 6 total rolls. Each component can roll with either HP or Def and pill can have sub stat of HP roll whereas fridge can have a sub stat of Def. As such, there is actually 6 to analyze. This is an important factor given mods are percentage based.

      They are already calculated in the sheet in the cathegory special value increase. I did not make a separation because i assumed one would definetly take these stat.

      Hard to say, depend on how much base Def you have.

      HP and Shield are basically the same in terms of how they work, they interact with Defense the same way so you can think of Shield as literally an extension of your health bar. The only reason why HP is preferred over Shields is because HP scaling is much higher, both on the external components and on modules. The highest HP%+ modules will give you 150/224% HP while Shield will be a much lower number. That said, to answer your question, is HP + Shield better than HP + Defense. I'm gonna say in general, yes, it actually is. Especially when you combine it with the various Shield affixes you can find on external components, like Shield Recovery during Combat or Shield Recovery Modifier, etc. Don't get me wrong, it's still usually a very small amount, but that small amount regen is still gonna give you a bigger return than if you chose Defense over Shield.
      Keep in mind, technically just straight up 4 HP main stat will probably give you the most survivalbility out of the box without having to really think about anything else with your build. But I think there is something to building for shield regen in your external components in which at that case, I think 3 HP + 1 Shield might be the way to go. Still 3 HP because HP gives the most bang for the buck, but 1 Shield main stat, just to buff your shields a little bit so that that, plus one Shield module will give you at least a decent starting base of shields to work with your regen, since regen is % based, the higher your shield value, the better the regen.
      On top of that, I do think that if you play a character that benefits more from Shields than the average, like an Ajax or Enzo, then 2 HP + 2 Shield might even be the way to go. Enzo has an ability that regens 25% of his Shield instantly and then a 6% a second shield heal for 10+ seconds. In that case, building a little more into Shields gives more Survivalbility because (at long as you have the mana), your Shield heal ability is giving you more life over the course of the fight than the extra HP would. I wouldn't go 100% all into Shields though, I've tried it and it's kinda cool, you feel super tanky while you have your Shield Drone up, honestly more tanky than my HP characters. However the problem is, if you run out of mana or if you just simply forget to refresh your shield drone and then you get hit really hard and lose your shield, you have such low HP that you die instantly and when you get revived, since you revive with no shields, you usually die instantly again too before you can even use your Shield Drone ability. I think splitting the difference half HP, half Shield on Enzo and Ajax is the way to go. With other characters, it's either Full HP or maybe 3 HP + 1 Shield if combining it with Shield affixes in your components. But definitely not Defense. I don't even bother building for it and I feel tankier than when I was under the allusion that I needed 50K defense.

    There is absolutely no defense or HP consideration, defense and HP defense and shield, but not defense or either one of them
