  • In this latest installment of "#StarTrek... from a Submariner's Perspective" we take a more in-depth look at the Klingon Bird Of Prey and whether or not it's a good comparison to a #submarine. We also mention #StarTrekEnterprise, and other #scifi (or #sciencefiction).
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine is an American science fiction television series created by Rick Berman and Michael Piller. It originally aired from January 1993 to June 1999, in syndication, spanning 176 episodes over seven seasons. The fourth series in the Star Trek franchise, it served as the third sequel to Star Trek: The Original Series.
Set in the 24th century, when Earth is part of a United Federation of Planets, its narrative is centered on the eponymous space station Deep Space Nine, located adjacent to a wormhole connecting Federation territory to the Gamma Quadrant on the far side of the Milky Way galaxy.
Following the success of Star Trek: The Next Generation, #Paramount Pictures commissioned a new series set in the Star #Trek fictional universe. In creating Deep Space Nine, Berman and Piller drew upon plot elements introduced in The Next Generation, namely the conflict between two alien species, the Cardassians and the Bajorans. Deep Space Nine was the first Star Trek series to be created without the direct involvement of franchise creator Gene Roddenberry, the first set on a space station rather than a traveling starship and the first to have a person of color-Commander (later Captain) Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks)-as its central character.
The Sturgeon class (known colloquially in naval circles as the 637 class) was a class of nuclear-powered fast attack submarines (SSN) in service with the United States Navy from the 1960s until 2004. They were the "workhorses" of the Navy's attack submarine fleet throughout much of the Cold War. The boats were phased out in the 1990s and early 21st century, as their successors, the Los Angeles, followed by the Seawolf and Virginia-class boats, entered service.
Star Trek is an American science fiction media franchise originating from the 1960s television series Star Trek, created by Gene Roddenberry. It followed the voyages of the starship USS Enterprise, a space exploration vessel built by the United Federation of Planets in the 23rd century, on a mission "to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before".
In creating Star Trek, Roddenberry was inspired by C. S. Forester's Horatio Hornblower series of novels, Jonathan Swift's 1726 novel Gulliver's Travels, the 1956 film Forbidden Planet, and television westerns such as Wagon Train.
The Star Trek canon includes the Original Series, nine spin-off television series, and a film franchise; further adaptations also exist in several media. After the conclusion of the Original Series, the adventures of its characters continued in the 22-episode Star Trek: The Animated Series and six feature films.
A television revival beginning in the 1980s saw three sequel series and a prequel: Star Trek: The Next Generation, following the crew of a new starship Enterprise a century after the original series; Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager, set in the same era as the Next Generation; and Enterprise, set before the original series in the early days of human interstellar travel. The adventures of the #NextGeneration crew continued in four additional feature films. In 2009, the film franchise underwent a reboot, creating an alternate continuity known as the Kelvin timeline; three films have been set in this continuity.
The newest Star Trek television revival, beginning in 2017, includes the series Star Trek: Discovery, #Picard, Short Treks, and #LowerDecks, streaming exclusively on digital platforms. At least two additional television series are in development: Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Star Trek: Prodigy.
#StarTrekDiscovery is an American television series created by Bryan Fuller and Alex Kurtzman for the streaming service CBS All Access (later rebranded as Paramount+). Launched in 2017, it is the seventh Star Trek series and was the first since Star Trek: Enterprise concluded in 2005. It begins a decade before Star Trek: The Original Series and follows the crew of the USS Discovery.

I love this series of videos. I really think you should watch Lower Decks. I swear almost every episode would have good Submariner's Perspective fodder. I especially would like to see your perspective on all the boring mundane jobs the characters have to perform. Of course my biggest complain is seeing O-1 officers doing what I would describe as E-3 work.

I was a submariner! thing is, star trek is inconsistent about enlisted members. TOS would occasionally refer to people as "crewmen" which sounds enlisted, although in the Navy we call them "seamen". You're a seaman until you make E-4, when you're a "third class petty officer" (E-4 through E-6 are addressed as "petty officer", although on a submarine, usually just their last name lol.)
But in TNG you hear crewmen even less....I think Chief O'Brien is the only one....and that's not even clear. I always thought they meant "chief" as in "chief of the transporter officers", not "chief petty officer". But he's a Chief as in Chief Petty Officer, where are the other chiefs??
So anyway, yeah, you sort of have the impression that everybody's an officer on TNG and later, so of course an O-1 is going to do hard work. 🙂

Considering the your old boat was of a Older Class but with up to date systems and weapons you should do a video on Starfleet's use of Older Starships like the Miranda and subclasses and Excelsior and Constellation as few Warships are only a few years old most are more than a few years old if not older

Gotta be honest, the dumbest thing the old school ST producers did was not also updating and using the OG Romulan Bird Of Prey... the first ship to go up against an Enterprise in Submarine warfare style in TOS classic ep The Balance of Terror.

That sounds like a f"ing blast, showing a bunch of other sailors/veterans (and Trek-newcomers) some episodes in 1997. Thank you for sharing your experience.
I've always critiqued the BOP vs Galaxy in Generations myself but it's cool to see your take -- I see it as a Battleship vs surfaced Sub or Frigate. Yes, the smaller ship can get 1-2 good surprise hits off, but once they're vulnerable, it's over. I wish they wrote or filmed that Generations scene differently for that reason ... once that BOP is visible, the Ent-D's phasers and photons should be able to cut through it like 12"-16" would against any lightly armored ship. The Undiscovered Country made sense because they couldn't land a solid hit til the very end.

I find the idea of a US Navy submarine crew finding inspiration from a Star Trek show amusing and cool as hell at the same time! Let alone a Klingon crew. Good story, I guess you take good leadership lessons where you find them.

Speaking of the great big hole on the front of the ship. They also seem to exit from it when the ship docks at DS9

Well, we don't know that. Just like we never saw where exactly people egress from the Defiant. I think the station uses the docking clamps and then there's a transporter that beams people on and off the ship just past the big cog wheels that we never saw.

Fun Trivia. The Bird of Prey was orignally supposed to be a Romulan ship, stolen by Commander Krug and his Klingons in Star Trek 3. Thats why it was green and had a large bird painted on the bottom- like the Romulan ship in "Balance of Terror" When you told the story about your sub Captain qouting Martok, I had a crazy mental image of a bunch of sailors singing in Klingon and one very confused Russian sonar guy. 😂

Bro you Barely if at All covered ST3 or 4 where it Debuted !? And where it wasn’t instantly portrayed as something that needed to be killed off, it went from being the Antagonist To the Protagonist In One Film And continued In the next film !
Still its pretty Lame how it was Still a BoP that took out the Hero Ship Instead of a Rarely shown Neg’Var or even the Vor’cha imo

In regards to the engagement at the end of Generations with the Enterprise and the bird of prey I would simply point out the absolute laziness of the writers and director.
Yes, the Duras sisters used the ability to view the, and this is important, current shield frequency at that time of initial engagement. However, ever since "The Best of Both Worlds" Federation tactics employed rotation of shield frequencies, referred to as shield nutation, when the current frequency is inadequate or compromised. This has gone as far as shield systems that automatically rotate frequencies. While the first Salvo definitely would have caught the Enterprise by surprise, once Worf realized the current frequency setting was compromised he simply would have started randomly selecting new ones. During a combat situation there is no way Geordi would have been staring at the display screen constantly so as to transmit the new frequency being utilized. Not to mention the obvious lag time there would be even if this was the case for the bird of prey to reattune their weapons to the new frequency all the while facing the tremendous offensive capability of a Galaxy class vessel. And it is clear that the bird of prey was having to land multiple disruptor hit over an extended period of time to have any effect to a unshielded Galaxy class vessel.
Simply put, that bird of prey would have gone down faster than a hooker with half-off coupons on spring break...

I think it had less to do with "laziness" and more to do with budget constraints. They had to reuse footage from the other films and they had to destroy the D to make way for the E. I have no problem with the BoP destroying the D, especially since the BoP was destroyed first before the D succumbed to her injuries.
