  • In this video I am going to show you how to make fishing line strings for your Tagelharpa.
    Traditionally the Tagelharpa uses horse hair strings however the problem that this has is that the horse hair strings fall out of tune and break quite easily, so the best solution for this is to make fishing line strings.
    Fishing line strings sound almost identical to horse hair strings, the only difference is that fishing line strings are much more durable, they almost never break and you can tune them much higher than what you can with horse hair strings.

    @11:24 "Don't worry, they won't break". @11:32 A cracking sound and a quick worried glance to the left.
    Nice video! I should probably get to work on my strings. My TH's have been sitting in the corner unstrung for months now.

    Very cool - thank you for the straightforward videos in general - I'm wondering, do you use the same number of threads for each string? I have a 4 string for reference with 14.5 inch scale length.

    You mentioned 26 strand for the heaviest string. How many strands for the other two?

    • @Aftenstorm
      @Aftenstorm  7 місяців тому +4

      Here I did 16+4 on the lightest. 20+4 on the mid and 26+4 on the bass. However you can also go 18+4 - 24+4 and 30+4.

      @@volkardlokisson6292 yes. Use the same technique as in the video but with a larger board and go with 40-60-80

    Hi! Very helpful video, thank you very much!! I’m a beginner with tagelharpa from Italy. Do you think it’s possible to use fishing line for the bow too?

    • @Aftenstorm
      @Aftenstorm  24 дні тому +1

      @@ilMaori It is possible yes.
      The bad thing with fishing line on the bow is that you will a lot of rosin produce a sound.

      @ cool, thanks! And what do you think about using violin steel strings? Is it a good idea? I’m currently deciding if i should purchase horse hair or regular violin strings.

    Hi. Very helpful vidéo for making own strings. I have built a Rebec (also called ravel) and I will try this technique. It is a bowed strings instruments, but I think horse hair bow with enough rosin on it should be able to grip on these strings to make the sound.

    • @Aftenstorm
      @Aftenstorm  7 місяців тому

      Yes of course. I use horse hair on my bow as
      Well.

    nice trick to lengthen the ropes like this but should it also be done with real horsehair??? then in the other video you twisted the hair 12 times here with the 24 line, so with the line always double compared to the real hair???

    • @Aftenstorm
      @Aftenstorm  5 місяців тому +1

      In the horse hair video I said that many people do up to 24 but that I prefer 12. It's really a matter of preference :)

    So, why are the 4 extra thread strands necessary?

    • @Aftenstorm
      @Aftenstorm  5 місяців тому

      They aren't necessary per se. But the sewing threads helps the fishing line mimic the sound of horse hair :)

      Hi! I use fish tail bass tuners. You can get them pretty cheap on Aliexpress.

  • @tine-l4j
    @tine-l4j 6 місяців тому

    Hi, can't I just use a thick fishing line, like 1,6mm(which I do have)? Is it important that several strings are beeing twisted? And do You use rosin only on the bow or also on the horse hair strings?

    • @Aftenstorm
      @Aftenstorm  6 місяців тому

      I wouldn't go over 0.25mm. Thicker will create a terrible sound. Twisting is necessary yes.
      I use rosin only on the bow. Anyone who puts rosin on the strings as well is a noob.
