The nice thing about the Delrin nuts is the self lubricating so they wont seize and the fit is so good there is zero wiggle in the legs. The downside is that if the centre wheel shaft gets bent it is near impossible to straighten it without damaging the nut. The metal nuts were more hardy and you could straighten out the shaft and get it working again.
One of my drafting sets is a Staedtler Mars-Masterbow from the '70s. The "extension bar" seemingly connected to nothing in the set. And it was a needle, not lead, which was even more baffling. Then I finally noticed a hole in the edge of the needle side of the compass. You remove the needle, (because it crosses over the hole), plug the extension into the hole, and tighten the needle holder.
I just watched your Staedtler Mars Superbow review. I'm glad you are out there explaining these items. Sometimes the internet is not very good with old school. Lots of gaps in knowledge.

I have the same set and I also had the same problem when I first examined the set! I could not figure out where the extension bar went! 😂
