Those marquetry kayaks were unreal! Life goals for sure...
Those were truly works of art. I'd be afraid to use one.
Thanks so much for the boat show - some lovely 'classics' there 🙂
That was so much fun ….thanks
@3:04 Rage! Such a sweet boat! Love the curved pipe berth idea. It was tough to get on, the crowds this year...@10:12 Sir Issac is a sweet machine. The owners are wonderful people too.
we must have gotten lucky. We were the only ones there when we went to see it. we had a great time meeting them and chatting. What a boat.
Wooden boat festival. Just heaven.
I live in Rhode Island, but I can grasp the very cool boat vibe of Port Townsend. Great video!! DD
I loved the festival while I was stationed out there from 2001-2003. Great event!
Interesting to see such a variety of wooden boats, a lot of work goes into maintaining them. Instead of the overhang perhaps some inverse sloping forward windows would achieve the same thing with an additional benefit of better visibility at night. Interesting to hear about the old Distant Shores Southerly 48, a great boat being enjoyed.
This was fun! Thank-you for the view of some awesome boat's 👌
Would LOVE to see much more of any boat show. Thank you for what you did show. Those kayaks are works of art TOO good to use, have to hang them up in Living room. Nice you have a boat to Captain.
Between you two and Sailing Magic Carpet you guys make Port Townsend look like a great place for boat lovers to visit. Thanks for taking us around the boat show.
And also Tally Hoe project
Don't forget Tally Ho! A truly wonderful project!
How dare you forgot Sampson Boat Co. How dare you...
@@MightyPubjwal sorry I don’t know who they are. Is that a UA-cam channel?
Surprised you haven’t come across Tally Ho..
I’m almost envious of the fun you’re going to have .🙂
I too enjoyed the Wooden Boat Festival and your presentation about Duracell too. A lot of amazing craftsmanship displayed. Thanks for the video.
Beautiful stuff crew. Thx for taking us along.
Thanks for the tour. Lovely boats.
Wow those kayaks and canoes were amazing! 😍😍👍👍Thanks for sharing awesome episode! 👍👍
Amazing work, I've been watching it all come together since the very start
I just love your passion and skills.
It looks so nice with all the sails up at the end.
Nice to see you having some time out... and looking relaxed.
yes, we had a little TOO much fun. Duracell got neglected for a few days!
Rage is an awesome and insanely fast boat, and Steve did a beautiful job building her. He was generous enough to let me sleep on his boat at the end of the Pacific Cup because I had raced to Kaneohe Bay on Mas Rapido, an Olson 30. I'd love to see him and the both again!
Cool! Yes we loved rage.
Love the dog house brow. We did one on our steel ketch and it made a HUGE difference when it rained👍
GREAT STUFF!!! I saw part of a totem pole at the begining of this vid. There are many totem poles in Victoria on southern Van.Isle.and probably throughout British Columbia.Great to see the boats too!!!
Who brings their boat to show and then doesn’t allow cameras? Seems kind of silly.
You were mentioned on Life On The Hulls. They said they were no Duracell project, just Energizer bunnies..lol
Thanks for the cool content. I appreciate the effort you put in to show your journey
Incredible
damn those kayaks are works of art (it almost feels shameful to put them in the water)
Yeah I like the Discovery 'brow. Although I don't think I could ever trust a wooden boat, I'd want to fibreglass the hull, at least the outside of the hull. And I liked the editing 'All the wooden boats strut their stuff 👍
Wow was watching a video on this place and the wooden boat festival.
I found out about it after watching some videos on Carol Hasse the sail maker.
You indeed live in a beautiful community 😁🙌
Best time of year here in the UK too..
Can someone please put those kayaks in a museum before they get wet!
Epic good time I need to go 🍻🍻🍻🤘
Hi guys how beautiful are some of these boats all of them thank you for your video keep up the good work Cliff from Logan city Queensland Australia from the big island
A brow was designed into our launch to keep us dry from waves sweeping up the window, when we were sitting on the cabin top. It sent the water sideways, when the bow dipped into a wave.
its on my bucket list but i doubt i will ever get to the festival so thanks so so much for the tour
we hope you do!
Rage is exquisite.
The Gulf 32 has a similar roofline. I really like it.
Okay - 239th LIKE posted at 1:42 - I think you mean "Wooden Art & Boat Festival" - amazing craftsmanship on display... 2113th Phantom Shipmate view continues...
yes, the craftsmanship is incredible
Rad Episode!
I saw Coyote a while ago, then while watching Aladino's build- I found you guys.
Now, I look forward to your new episodes. I dig your raw honesty, lack of pretension, and the down to earth vibes.
Also, because you guys are so quirky.
Im down w/ how quirky you guys are.
lol
*quirky in a very good way!
Cheers from Boise!
we love this comment, thanks 😊
No Tally ho visit?
She not in the Water Yet. Hang in there
there were hundreds of people in line! Another time :)
I wanted too move there .
Is it just me, or is Matt like the chilliest dude on the planet?
you should meet his Dad. -Janni
I would have loved to have a wooden fishing boat but I have ended up with GRP and steel ones, the insurance, cost of timber and craftmanship are too expensive here in the UK now but I have worked on some fine wooden vessels in the past
Port Townsend sure looks like a fine place to set up home.
I have owned a few wooden boats. Nothing big, most were 12 to 19 feet.
They have their own unique maintenance issues you have to just be aware of. However they are beautiful if taken care of. Would love to find about a 16 plus foot sailing dorry to play around on the Columbia river. However I think that would be a 2 year building project.
Great video.
8:10 - hmmm... seems "Magic Carpet" is a 'ketchy' name for sailboats, eh? Wonder if y'all have crossed paths with you-know-who.
Thanks for taking the break from your own project to film and share this very cool event. "Cheers!"
Actually, they are friends, and Aladino and Maya introduced their own viewers to the Duracell Project.
@@777rogerf Yes, that's how I got "here."
@@1519Spring YES - me, too.
@@777rogerf Yep - they pointed the way here, to me, too.
When I think of wooden boats, my first thought is plank on frame. They look really strong with big, beefy, close spaced frames and thick planks. Really these things show the weakness of the construction method, it is all about the small fasteners being both great in number and having a greater area/depth of timber so they don't pull out. They also suffer from constant racking. Very beautiful to look at, nice to ride in, can last many years and maintenance methods are well known. However, I would not buy or build one because there are better methods available now. I noticed that many of the boats looked at were cold mold or plywood based with fiberglass covering. Certainly for one off building this would be the method I would choose, the frames can be father apart or non-existent (bulkheads can do the job) giving better interior space while still being stronger. If looking for a hull to upgrade... fiberglass would be the way to go. I would probably use plywood for any structural base but still coat it with FG. However the foam you are using on Duracell looks just as good and maybe lighter as well. If I was paying to have a hull built, I might choose metal just because that is most common in this neck of the woods. I have something against sending my money out of the country or even away from the area I live in :) Yes wood looks so nice.... I'll leave that for the interior.
I can appreciate wooden boats but I definitely don't have the patience to maintain one.
me neither!
Rage is a weapon, similar in general appearance to Duracell! Clearly relevant
totally
@@TheDuracellProject Have you ever handled a high speed sled like Duracell in big wind and waves? Must be a big learning curve for most sailors, especially cruising yacht sailors. Big seas in North Pacific during a Clipper race: ua-cam.com/video/4XrcxD2K-CA/v-deo.html
Craftsmanship lives.
Ya it needs to be all wood. Just all wood on the inside only.
Was "Pirate" in the harbor this year? The beautiful R-boat of Dr Scott R.
Don’t know-didn’t see it!
I'm curious if you liked the dodger setup on Discovery? Also, you guys should try and get out to the Annapolis Sailboat show if you haven't been. Love your videos!
loved it!
You can really see the Scandinavian heritage in Washington.☺️ I also spotted some “Freya” chocolate in one episode. Do you have any Norwegian connection? Greetings from a swede in Norway🤗
Poulsbo, WA, not too far from where this was filmed, calls itself Little Norway and their annual town festival is called Viking Fest.
Janneke is half Norwegian (speaks Norwegian and has lived there) and Matt's grandma was Norwegian.
Did you run into Leo, of Tally Ho fame? He had his restore project on Sequim, he's now in the Port Townsend boat building yard.
yes, we have!
You've prolly already thought of this, but you should try to contact Duracell Batteries and see if you can get them to help sponsor some of the refit. They sponsored the original boat and you're not renaming it as of yet. Everytime you say the boat's name you're giving the company free PR. You video's are great and you'd def be doing them a service. Go get paid!
we'd love that, but have not had any success getting in touch with people at Duracell.
@ Brannan High: Duracell, was designed and built for a prestigious race sponsored by big-name companies with deep pockets, but a few sailing channels have attracted support from smaller marine equipment firms, so why not The Duracell Project? The question is, at what stage?
@@777rogerf I'm not suggesting that Durracell foot the bill for the entire refitt or even that they are obligated to. They did however spend the modern day equivelant of like $2-3 mil to build the thing. The fact that someone wants to keep it alive and maintain the name is awesome for them. They get more good PR and name recogonition and Duracell can keep their mobile bill board afloat almost indefinetly. Even just a license agreement for the name where they pay them a set stipend every month that they maintain the name of the boat and continue to produce UA-cam content. A couple hundred/thousand bucks a month is barely a line item in a PR budget for a company like Duracell (that is owned by Berkshire Hathaway btw). Great publicity for very little actual invetment imo.
Have you bumped into Tally Ho yet?
we bumped into him the other day, yes! Nice guy.
Plastic Totem Pole 😱
Duracell is getting a Mizzen mast? Maybe i misunderstood.
no mizzen mast on Duracell!
😎👍💙🇸🇯
Meet up with Leo and co on Tally Ho build mate?
maybe one day!
@@TheDuracellProject 🙂
Say hi to Tally Ho...🤗
Have you thought about selling Duracell Project merch?
We are not selling merch now…but we are looking into turning a couple old Duracell sails in bags.
Elegant Wood...solid not plywood...old growth salvaged teak 400 grit finished and oiled... where?? inside...where head board stateroom bed...juxtaposed the headboard...the inside of the stateroom bulkhead wall...the essence of high tech composite for the translucent look 50/50 weave of kevlar and carbon...after all you are using epoxy resin and vacuum baggery
I have been watching a lot of posts by Dick Beaumont from Kraken Yachts, and I thought of an insane challange for you guys, that is, building an integral keel for Duracell. That would be the mother of all lamination jobs, to say the least. And, a rudder protected by a skegg is also something to be considered if you guys really want to venture out on this boat safely. This post is sobering ua-cam.com/video/uqf71SH5V5k/v-deo.html
i did think about doing that, actually. it would be the mother of all hand layups.
Seems too me this town is kinda weird.
.
Should duracell be wooden?…what a dumb question…. No !
it's a joke :)
Bummer episode, waited for it to drop all day...freekin wooden boat show.
I hope this isn't one of those channels that thinks were going to be interested in your vacations too.
WE LOVE DURACELL...and you building it!!!
I was really impressed with those pipe berths though, what a fantastic use of space.
Don't get me wrong I'm a huge fan of Tally Ho and Arabella, but they aren't taking us to fiberglass boat shows.
Tally Ho was at the wooden boat festival Too! I was at the festival Saturday, and I saw tally ho. at Boat Haven. I'm a fan of the Duracell project, and appreciate that Matt is also a fan of wooden boats.
we know, we know. we were working at the festival (leading up to it too) and needed to do some home maitenance so didn't have time for Duracell, unfortunately. Don't worry, LOTS of boat work to come. Probably more than you ever asked for 🤣
One of the things about following a channel is you do get to follow the life of those on it. I think a trip to a wooden boat show adds variety to the content. Yes I am very interested in watching how you develop Duracell into a cruiser, albeit a very fast cruiser. Keep it up,it is fun to watch.
@@TheDuracellProject haha, probably not...I love this work, keep it up, you all are amazing! Oh by the way I'm from Post Falls, born and raised up onthe boat life of CDA lake. I'm a professional mariner now because of those early boating days.
For 20 yrs I was a nurse at Western State and lived in Steilacoom...small world I tell ya!
Why was that white lady on the boat doing black face?
A suggestion…please review choices of music, perhaps take a listen to sailing magic carpet for a soothing addition to your episodes. Music should compliment and enhance the pleasure NOT distract or create an uncomfortable vibe! Your viewers will appreciate it! Thank you
You've gotta be kidding right?! Trolling even. (see 11:08 to 12:21, bordering on genius, assuming you're not deaf)
Maya does a beautiful job with music (and everything else) for sure!
