  • The Bee Gees are a British soft rock band consisting of three brothers, Robin, Barry and Maurice Gibb. The fourth of the musical brothers, Andy, chose a solo career. The group was formed in 1958 and disbanded on January 21, 2003 after Maurice's death. Before the Gibb brothers became known as the Bee Gees, they performed as "Brothers Gibb", "Blue Cats" and "The Rattlesnakes" and lived in Brisbane, Australia. Upon their return to England, the group initially modelled themselves on the American duo The Everly Brothers, but later became influenced by The Beatles, The Beach Boys and Simon & Garfunkel. The group's music, based on polyphonic harmonies sung in falsetto, with a rather delicate instrumental accompaniment, was able to win the audience's acclaim - with the help of producer Robert Stigwood, who helped the band rise to the heights.
The Bee Gees were successful for most of the band's existence, but the brothers' careers split into two distinct periods. Being a commercially successful band in the late 1960s and early 2000s, they became a leading performer of the world's popular music in the late 1970s. This was thanks to the recording of disco-style songs that were included in the soundtrack of the film Saturday Night Fever (1977). This spectacular success also led to the group's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997.
