- On Monday, 29 October 2012, the Department of Religion Studies at the University of Johannesburg and the Mail and Guardian hosted Professor Tariq Ramadan for a public lecture on Muslims, Humour and the Prophet Muhammad.
The event was attended by over 300 people and was chaired by Professor Adam Habib, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Johannesburg.
Tariq Ramadan is Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani Professor of Contemporary Islamic Studies at Oxford University. He holds a MA in Philosophy and French literature and PhD in Arabic and Islamic Studies from the University of Geneva. His books include The Arab Awakening: Islam and the New Middle East; The Quest for Meaning, Developing a Philosophy of Pluralism and Radical Reform, Islamic Ethics and Liberation.
