Hi Ms Diane. Remember when you said you will show us how to make the pattern for the coat in the beginning of the video? Would be really nice if you taught us this exaggerated shawl collar. I really love it. It is gorgeous and classic.
Hi Diane, I patterned my shawl collar to have a pointed lapel and I couldn’t under stitch the points because of the angle. What would you do in that case? Thanks
Hello Sandrika, This one, on the mannequin is a shawl collar, but the center back of the collar is longer, since it shape as a hood. I will show how to shape it this way soon, the measurements are at center back 43 cm and at shoulder 29 cm. Diane
Hi Margaret, Yes, most of the time, I would fuse both side. I can not say always, because If you are doing a shawl collar in knit, for a vest, than no fusable.
I dont know if you mentioned the type of fabric that you have used. I would appreciate you discussing your choice of fabric as this would be important with something like a shawl collar.
Hi Greta, I only mention that the facings and the front should be fuse, and this is if you are planing to do buttonhole and sew button. The fusing is also giving strength to the fabric. You are right the fabric is important, but mostly for the style and fall that you want. To practice use stable medium weight fabric, but after Don't be scare to use other. I have been teaching fashion design and pattern making to finishing student for 25 years, and I have seen beautiful nontraditional shaw collar in almost any fabric, nice wool of course but also organza and polar fleece. For my video, most of the time, I use left over pieces, in color that will look good and clear for viewer.
You are an amazing teacher! I would love the pattern to make that exact navy jacket at the beginning. Do you think that you will be selling that pattern anytime soon with a a step by step video tutorial on how to make it. Pleeeeezzzzze😅😁that would be soooooooo awesome!!!
Hello Matinaris, I can't promise because I get so many request, but I love that coat and I would love to show you how to make it. I will do my best. Diane
Hi Gerd-Hege, this blue coat on my mannequin is a shawl collar/hood and I want to make it a video cause I love it. AND it easy, even easier than a shawl because you could skip the collar development ( the opening part) you could simply hold your hood pattern overlapping (neck and shoulder points) to your bodice and pivot until the front part is parallel to grain line of bodice.
Hi Diane Deziel , Thank you for your quick reply, have a question. When I draw the hoodie, I'll put it in the collar (in the video to draw the shawl collar) where you measure the width of the collar at the shoulder point with the guide at 4.14 in the video on the front? is that right ?
Hi Rose, YES you should have fusing at the neck & overlap area of the bodice and all facing fuse also. This is only to show how to put the pieces together, so for you to see better I did not fuse them. Diane
Hi Eleanor, The neck seam is the same for both, the self (back with front, in darker turquoise) and the facing (back and front), the one I show the sewing. Since it was easier to see, because of the light color. But I did sew both exactly the same way. I'm almost finish with the shawl pattern video, I will post it tomorrow, that could help understanding the pieces. Diane
