I’m an older Army and I can say from my years on this earth I’ve heard and seen ALOT of artists come and go but none have ever affected me with their voices alone like these guys…you can not understand a single word yet be moved to tears or happiness just by their voices they have a talent for making you feel or experience their music….that’s a rarity 💜💜!

Everything about this makes me tear up. I was crying on the verge of heavy sobbing at Yet to Come Busan in the theatre it’s just so delicate and heartbreakingly beautiful. The choreography and how they look like a butterflies wings also hits the side of me with just how haunting and delicate the voices and lyrics are. Like how does the group who does Ugh give us this????
The performance was the 2018 Festa concert, theme/name Prom Party, the theme was a HS prom party so they had a lot of outfits like they were taking Army to prom. This is the same event they first performed Ddaeng at. An epic epic show.
Oh I cried during the Busan concert at the cinema. It was such a beautiful performance.
There's a vlive where Jin was playing butterfly on the guitar and Jimin was singing I love this clip too!!

YES! I was blown away by how casual Jin and Jimin were and yet they both sounded great. I mean, Jimin was looking at his phone the whole time he was singing! 🤣🤣
11:44 Those moments where Jin is the focus of the dance were actually so rare in the past that they even got a name. We call it "Jin in the middle". It's interesting that several people notice it enough to comment on it. Kind of proves it. 😏

Jin really came a long way in dance from these days. He always knew the choreo and never missed a beat but his rhythm is spot on now. He is actually my favorite. (Bias)

It's very strongly theorized by ARMY that Butterfly is about losing someone you love to mental health. Speaking about how you don't want to believe it is true. How delicate that life is, because at any moment it could flutter away and shatter. Being afraid to let go of their hand because they might disappear. Life that is as delicate as a Butterfly. Asking them to stay with you, to promise. RM references Kafka as well. I cry so hard to myself because I lost my mom this way and when I read the theories about it, it completely clicked and means the world to me.

It's from Festa 2018 prom party 🥳. One of my favorite BTS choreography 💜. Jin has a background part at at 3:27 in the song that no matter how loud I'm singing, I shut up and listen for it. Absolute ear candy 🍬

@Ashley Yo That's Jin's lead part. But at 3:27 you can hear Jin on background vocals quietly harmonizing with Tae at the end of Tae's verse. It's short but so beautiful 😍
Brian Puspos is brilliant. This choreography is full of what we think of now as classic Hybe movements - not even just BTS, the Hybe Jump is in there. But everything has exchanged sharpness for fluidity. It's still strong, it's still synchronized, but everything flows. Even the jump is softened.
It must have been so hard for them to learn. It suits Jimin's style but it's a departure from most of what the group does, and this kind of choreo is a lot harder than it looks. So much control goes into the slow movements.
One of my favorite things about it - other than the zillions of times when it shows us a butterfly in some way - is that the entire dance has a slow pulsing beat to it, which lines up with the wing-flaps but is there the whole time. There's a lot going on, but if you unfocus and just watch, you'll feel this slow pulse. It feels like a butterfly slowly fanning its wings.
To me, that image is linked with being a child, holding a hatching monarch in my hand as it comes from its chrysalis. It would sit in my hand and slowly spread its wings and fan them in the sunlight until they dried and it could fly away. It was always this magical, fleeting, fragile moment - which also fits the song perfectly.

An american choreographer did this Brian Bupus I think is his name. He also did serendipity. Jin's dancing has improved 10,000 percent! go back and watch RUN BTS Busan. Jin ate that stage. actually they all did! first two songs, go back and just watch Jin. ( I know it's really hard to take eyes off Jimin, LOL)

Yes. The choreography was stunningly exquisite. Love Jin in the front! Yes. Impressive foot work.
And not only the flapping of the wings, but also they did a butterfly formation.

The fact that Jin is my bias and yet I am buying other members stuff is something that happens once in a lifetime. They are a force, masters of their craft. Every member has something that peaks my interest despite how different they are to each other.
After a man watched a BTS concert performance, he said there is something unique about the love exchange between ARMY and BTS and how incredible that must feel to the members receiving all that love in that moment.

This is one of the most beautifully choreographed songs BTS has ever done. It was choreographed by Brian Puspos….an American Phillipino choreographer and Jimin’s favorite. He did Serendipity for Jimin😍💜

There is an excellent video at Steezy of 3 choreographers doing the Jimin section of "Vibe" and the first choreographer Gabe de Guzman's work is AMAZING TO WATCH
He's one of my favorites too and I really want him to work with Jimin more in the future - their styles suit each other so beautifully. I'd love to see them dance together. (They also admire each other. It's so good.)
This dance shows how diverse they are as dancers. And yes, I think it's awesome that Jin got some out front time.
RM said, years ago, that he doesn't know how to move his body beautifully... Everytime I see this dance practice I can't help but tear up looking at how utterly beautifully he moves, they all do, but for some reason RM steals the show for me 🫰🫶💜
He also moves gorgeously in Black Swan, there is a stage cam RM focus video that is utterly captivating.

Of course, the emotional content is so different, Butterfly is pain and fear you feel for someone else's fragility, while Black Swan is a more existential pain for one's own mind and soul. (This is a really boiled down way to compare them.) I just wanted to share another opportunity to see RM dancing beautifully.

I love this song. It highlights the delicate parts of their voices. I too liked the fact that Jin got a bit more center time. Those high notes of Jimin in the background WOW!! Loved every part of this song, especially the message they were conveying to us Army.
BTS is no stranger to mining emotional depth in their lyrics, and "Butterfly" is a key representation of the lyrical complexity that sets them apart as a K-pop act. The lyrics express the fear of losing someone through the simile of a butterfly. The butterfly could be interpreted as representing the ephemerality of time that risks being lost at a moment's notice: "Will you stay by my side?/ Will you promise me?/ If I let go of your hand, you might fly away and break, I'm scared."…Yoongi wrote it in hope to express the fear of losing someone by using the similar of a butterfly. It's meant to represent the fact that everything and anyone can be lost at a moments notice if you don't pay attention. But it mostly seems like the fear of losing someone who brings you so much happiness. There's also a hint of trying to save someone before they do something they regret or something they won't come back from…We all have different interpretation when it comes to any song..this was yoongi’s interpretation & Armys hv their own..cuz same lyrics can mean something different to you, it’s the way the song impacted you as an individual..But I just wanna share this Army interpretation that just lines up with what yoongi said about this song.. it just makes total sense if you read the lyrics..that is an Army once said "the song butterfly is about loving someone who is suc!dal" it really hit different & makes sense, especially when you know the story behing RM's line: Kafka on the shore…That's the beauty of BTS' music. They are all up for the listeners' interpretation and what it means to the individual…but this is the real meaning 💜
Thank you for explaining all this for John - I was looking to see if anyone had done it. It also ties in with the MV which is all BU oriented and the boys' stories in that, which obv contain those elements too.

JM's dance line and high notes is insanely beautiful 😍
What makes it even more awesome is the fact when they are in the butterfly position and they wave out if you notice they are not touching each other. Can't see what the person behind them is doing yet the wing moves in perfect synchronization. Each person knows exactly which word to move too.

“Will you stay by my side? Will you promise me?” and “don’t try to disappear.” This song has always been painful yet still beautiful to me.
I think this performance was from the BTS Prom Party Festa 2018.
This song saved my life before I knew it was bts. This song gave a voice to those who were afraid I would leave them forever when i was in a mental place where they no longer reached me. Butterfly brought me back to the land of the living when I was on the edge so to speak. A few of the lines in the lyrics are words that people in my life have actually said to me so when I feel the darkness come again, this song finds it's way to me. This song will always hold a special place in my heart forever.
I love this song! (I know I say that often, but it’s true). Even if you don’t understand the words you’re listening to, you can FEEL the beauty of this song. I love how BTS can make you feel the message of their songs. The connection they share with ARMY is truly something special.
Butterfly is one of my FAVORITE songs. The lyrics! And the choreo! Just amazing.
All the performances you see with that particular stage is from 2018 BTS PROM PARTY. This is part of their FESTA dated June 12, 2018.
It was a live that you had to purchase to view in VLive (vlive is shut down now btw). But if you purchased it back then and had transferred everything you purchased to your we verse account, then you're able to view the whole Prom Party still.
Jin is a good dancer.
One thing I like about BTS is that their songs can be reflected on everyone's personal life in some kind of way.
I personally always hear the song "Butterfly" when I missing my loved one who are gone from this world.
My memories of them are like a butterfly - I can see my loved ones but if I try to hold onto them to strongly they shatter and fly away.
And even if I know that I can't, I sometimes wish that I could stop time, because I don't want to let them go.
I like both versions of the song.

Butterfly is the song I found BTS. I loved the song, the harmonies, and the clean and synchronised dancing. Then I saw We are Bulletproof 2 and I was floored. Completely different in every single way and it was incredible and their aggression and dance were amazing. Then I saw 'N.O' and the lyrics and message were fire. I understood what they were about and I was completely sold. That was it for me. I was an Army! 💜

The Prologue version of this song is much more slower, longer, and sentimental. If you already watched the Busan Expo Concert, it's the one only the vocal line performed.

I'm glad you watched the dance practice before this live, because there were so many close-ups and you could barely see the choreo. But they sounded great and looked beautiful in those suits! Don't get me wrong, I greatly appreciate close-ups of their lovely faces 😝 but when it comes to stage performances, I want to see the actual choreo more as well.

Thank you for this reaction, John! This is a beautiful, hauntingly tender song and the choreo is so evocative, so precise. My favourite version is the Prologue Mix they sang in Busan primarily because it's got more Jin! Although I did miss the rap parts. Forgive me for being irreverent, but that clockface in the background with the changing swirling patterns looked so much like the stargate in Stargate SG-1 that I had a mental image of them fluttering through the gate into a garden world. Well, they did go tripping through the cosmos in My Universe 😊😊😊
As an older army this was a big issue with army. (Jins limited lines n spotlight moments) for a long time in 2015 there was a lot of hate given to him from another fanbase, telling him to quit cuz he obv couldnt sing n had little to no lines on their songs....he thankfully didnt listen n proved all the haters wrong over the years. He is an amazing vocalist and has gained so much confidence thank God. He is beloved and missed by us true ARMY.

You can see the butterfly through so many of their motions. And I agree with your interpretation - particularly how they performed it last year in Busan. It was like they were asking ARMY to stay with them through the uncertain years to come. Of course, they never had to ask. We will always be there.

Hi John, Brian Puspos was the choreographer of this. He has a delicate approach to movements which suits this song perfectly. Going by the clock background the live version you saw was from a Prom Party 4 years ago. Jin and V did Definitely You at that one.
