I've played violin, guitar, and bass professionally but have always been horribly embarrassed about my truly pathetic inability to play this kind of instrument. I can sing the rhythms I want it to play and transcribe them off records and I can hear how well someone else is performing but I just can't get any rhythm out of a shaker to save my life. So I started going through UA-cam instructional videos with an egg shaker in my hand and while all of them sounded good, none of them made me sound any better except this one. I still suck but this is the first time I've ever made any progress at all, so thank you very much! Holding it higher and singing "cacophony" both really helped. I'll go check out the longer video now.
Thank goodness you covered the safety aspect. I can't tell you how many times I have seen serious shaker injuries because of misuse! Seriously though, thanks dude. I'm getting back into percussion after being out of the business for 39 years and I have forgotten many of these small, but important techniques. And "cacophony"... well, that's brilliant and funny.
The long one might be long but I reccommend it. As a amateur musician, it is very interesting to learn about other people perspective on such a simple yet profound instrument. Thank you for the VDO. Keep up the quality content:)
Hey man, love your video. I can't tell you how many times I've watched it and I always pick something up from it. I like your personality the way you come across and you're teaching, and this has helped me understand the shaker . I have referred several people to this video so thanks again. Thank you for the information so much
Great video…and funny! I’m glad to know that the technique you teach is “safe and effective” if used as directed (lol) The mnemonic I was taught for samba shaker accents was “a-duck, a chick-a-duck, a chick”….but ca-ca-phony works too. :-)
ah it's been 4 years already, then I remembered that I still have that shaker--lost my egg and diy shakers--and I still wanna learn more from these clips haha
Thanks! You know what's hard for me to do.... Just simple "one shake" accents. For say, a slow ballad. Where I want just one clean shake on a downbeat of every measure. I always get sloppy/unwanted sounds leading up to the actual beat. I think your tip on shaking horizontally will help though.
Hey, This shaker is for making acoustic version for a cover songs? How much the shaker with the pesos? (₱)? BTW, I'm from the Philippines. I'm trying to get new gears for my drums with a 5 pieces kit attached to a new drum electronics pad, Shaker, new cymbals and more. I'm a musician, I can play drums, Guitar and piano. I'm 16 years old. how can you make acoustic beat for a shaker?
You can get some really nice and satysfying sounds from simple home-made shakers, using some plastic pots and dry seeds/grains (rice, lentil, crotalaria... I like something hard and small), You just need to experiment a little about what makes a good sound for You. These "seed&plastic" shakers use to have a perfect sound especially for acoustic version of songs... And now the quest for how can You make the beat? This depends totally on the style/genre which You want to play, which defines Your rhytmic patterns quite a lot. Educate Yourself listening to various music of various styles from around the world. Start with simple patterns, but try to be as precise as possible to gain the right flow, this is the only correct way... Good luck bro! ;-)
It is about practice indeed, which allows Your beat to gain the right timing and flow! The mechanics of a shaker is quite different and more complex than the mechanics of what is just a natural beating of the "empty" hand itself, so You really need to learn it through the practice... Only due to practice - the correct shaking movement of the hand will become "natural" for Your brain and hands muscles, and Your shaker will gain the perfect flow... Yet I strongly believe that this "timing skill" You can NOT be taught, for You must only learn it by Yourself through Your own effort and training... From my personal experience this is better trained using the straight staccato techniques (which Kalani himself also shows us), and plyaing in both directions as symertical as possible... You better try other patterns after achieving the perfection of the most simple ones... Good luck! ;-))
Thanks for making this beginner-friendly intro!

Is perfect timing a natural thing or can you be taught it?
It takes practice.
@@WORLDDRUMCLUB Exactly!
